I went down to our community marina this morning to catch the Blue Angels at 10:03 en route for their flyover at the Navy Stadium. In past years I have moored the boat about 100 yards from the dock to get a clearer view with less masts in the way.
This year I decided to stay on the dock to get some location context - plus I have a lot of work repairing ou deck that I hope to wrap up before the weather moves in. The last couple of shots are to give and idea of where I was shooting from....Show more →
Well done Patrick...Well done indeed! I envy you that opportunity!!

Thanks for your images Nick. I have a great regard for helicopters and their "jockeys" from combat experience! They saved my "six" and those of soldiers and rained wrath upon the enemy!
My mates/cobbers from Australia/NZ also were fearless back then and never held back.

Photographed this A-220, N119DU, at DFW Airport this past Wednesday. I've had the opportunity to fly on six of these in First Class, and it is a very nice ride, unless you are in row 1. If you are tall like me, row 1 is not that comfortable. One other little tidbit, I cannot get over the amount of space they have in the lavatory. Most airliner lavatories are rather cramped, these have plenty of space, and if you go to the rear lavatory, there is a window in it.

Fine images!

Thanks Dan,
I almost wish I had just gone out in front of our house - a neighbour posted phone video on our community FB page showing the BA flew right over our house seconds before they were over the marina. I would have needed quick reactions though to catch them between the trees.

Well Patrick I have a similiar situation here in New Market! A nephew of JimWilson is a helo pilot and his aviation unit flies from DC to an unamed area North of me in formation. I can hear them coming minutes before I see them.
I try to run to my back yard and wave my infantry units flag to show support. Most of the time I miss!!!
I get a "waggle-n-wave" every now and then from the crews!!
Good luck..I have your number...

Dan, I have an easier situation than that, as I know what the timing will be to within about 30 seconds if I choose to stay by the house next year. This year judging by my neighour’s video I could have got a nice shot over the house. In previous years though they have sometimes flown a parallel course one to two hundred yards further north and then they wouldn’t be over the house and the light would be behind them.
We went out to our daughter's ranch this afternoon and I logged a little time on a new mower, knocked out a few acres in short order. She took us over to a stable where one of her new colts was born a few days ago. The light was perfect, as was the location, so.........................
Hi Don, those horses were shot with the R5. When I got there I had the AF set for tracking and the cubes were moving all over as I composed images. Intuition told me that I needed to switch to spot, and I was correct, the tracking setting was not capturing my subjects as sharply.

Beautiful horses, Jim! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend with your families.
Went to Latrobe, Pa for an airshow yesterday. Just horrible horrible weather, 50 degrees the whole day, damp and cloudy, drizzled on and off, but that created the perfect condition for vapor cones. Here is one of many. I haven't had time to go through the thousands of pictures yet.
Also to the Washington DC very early this morning to hit the usual Memorial Day spots: WWII Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Marine Corps. War Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. My iPhone indicated I walked 9 miles, with 3 cameras and 5 lenses.
I am grateful, the message on the note in the 3rd picture says it all.
Spent an extended weekend touring a capitalist estate...The Biltmore. One of my special areas of interest in college was researching failed businesses. In a way, George Vanderbilt's fortune is an example. Cornelius Vanderbilt passed down "old money" to his heirs, some did OK, others struggled. After George died, the family struggled to stay afloat in their lifestyle, and then the 1929 market crash really set them back. Part of the cure is capitalizing on the Biltmore Estate with tours, hotels, weddings and events.
As to Covid, I think it is all but dead in the South, at least the fear is diminished, greatly. We traveled by car in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, then back to Texas. Only a McDonalds in Mississippi had sign up requiring masks. Maskers were definitely in the minority. Almost seemed things were back to normal sans employees wearing them.
My favorite room. I love rooms encased in wood because I love working with wood. Also, the serenity of the red upholstery then add the books and I am very content.
George Vanderbilt and his wife were quite tall for the times. He was 6 feet while she was about 5' 10''.
Ray, did they tell you the story of Cornelius standing on that sight and saying he wanted to buy all the land he could see in any direction.......then he proceeded to do just that?
I believe that is right because he bought over 125,000 acres, (George, Cornelius' grandson built the estate.)
The estate has been downsized to 8000 acres. Many acres were given to the gov't to be maintained as forest. I think Hurst did the same thing when he bought his land on the Northern California coast for his castle (we went there last year).
