Most of the power in Texas that failed was powered by other than "green energy". Freezing pipelines, etc etc, failure to winterize equipment was the culprit, not solar or wind.

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/17/texas-power-grid-failures/

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/16/natural-gas-power-storm/

"More than half of ERCOT’s winter generating capacity, largely powered by natural gas, was offline due to the storm, an estimated 45 gigawatts, according to Dan Woodfin, a senior director at ERCOT."

"The outages during this storm far exceeded what ERCOT had predicted in November for an extreme winter event. The forecast for peak demand was 67 gigawatts; peak usage during the storm was more than 69 gigawatts Sunday.

It’s estimated that about 80% of the grid’s capacity, or 67 gigawatts, could be generated by natural gas, coal and some nuclear power. Only 7% of ERCOT’s forecasted winter capacity, or 6 gigawatts, was expected to come from various wind power sources across the state.

Woodfin said Tuesday that 16 gigawatts of renewable energy generation, mostly wind generation, are offline and that 30 gigawatts of thermal sources, which include gas, coal and nuclear energy, are offline.

“It appears that a lot of the generation that has gone offline today has been primarily due to issues on the natural gas system,” Woodfin said during a Tuesday call with reporters."

Hi Jan Arie,

This one was tricky. We have a freeze guard on the equipment that is designed to kick in at 36 degrees, and we have a very efficient heater that I would have kicked on when things got ridiculous. Problem was, ERCOT shut off our power in the middle of the night and the pool froze before I knew it was off. So, nothing could be drained because it was a Popsicle by the time I woke up and the heater can't run if the electric pump isn't circulating the pool . This was just lone of those things

Texas has been having problems with power generation and supply, ever since the Enron fraud and then over deregulation and pretty well no oversight, by authorities.
In the latter respects, Texas is not unique

Next time you're at DFW need to mosey by Marathon Coach in Grand Prairie and see if there's a Prevost that'll strike your fancy. There's got to be enough space, on the side, to fit a P-51 spinning disk picture.

Hi Hawkeye,

I have a couple of clients with Prevosts, they are the ultimate for sure. One of our friends that we are partnering with on a couple of land deals and an oil deal has asked me numerous times to come down and get his Prevost and take it on an adventure. I think his bus ran close to $2M.

I hear you Eddie Ray, love that button Buddy, using it more every day. What is your status on the 1DXIII CPS loaner and your shooting schedule?

I talked with a guy in Killeen I see at some UMHB games. He upgraded from the 1DX I to the III last year. He loves it so much he bought a second one. Since we shoot some similar venues I asked him to send me some files shot at 12,800. He sent files shot at ISO 10,000 to 32,000 with similar shutter speeds I use. They were impressive. He like me, doesn't go down to 2.8 in the low light gyms, so there is usually noticeable noise with my 7D II. I will live with the noise because at close focal distance when I focus on a jersey at f/2.8, arms, the head and the opponent are out of focus. I am usually at f/4.0.

I was satisfied with the files he sent me, like I said, very impressed (compared to my 7D II). I think the 1Dx III is in my future. My schedule went slack for week and then became crammed because postponed games were slid to baseball/softball/soccer season. I am shooting 5 games in four days this week.

My plan is to not use the Canon loaner and trust his samples. Looks like my schedule will be a summer procurement (unless we get another economic disaster...unfortunately that looks promising!).

Just received to following notification:

"With a heavy heart, we must let you know that Thunder Over Niagara 2021, scheduled for June 19-20 at the Niagara Air Reserve Station, is canceled.
Your Thunder Over Niagara Team, which encompasses both military and civilian partners, spent the last year pulling out all the stops. We are thankful to everyone that put forth an extraordinary effort to bring you a safe air show.
Unfortunately, the decision to cancel the 2021 air show came directly from Air Force Reserve Command a few hours ago. With Command's decision, there are no options left for us to bring you an air show.
Thank you for all your patience and support over the last year. Here’s wishing you, your family, and friends all the best moving forward.

Regretfully,

That's too bad, but not unexpected. Sun'n'Fun looks like it's on for now and OSH is putting on a brave face. I think Oshkosh would risk about anything before they would take another hit like they did last year. Uncharted territory for sure, we'll just hav etc take it a day at a time. EL Centro pulled their opening show off.

So "MOST people" are following the rules.

Typhoid Mary.

Being out dealing with the public, there are far too many out there who will not wear a mask and will poke their heads around the plexiglass in place and talk/spray those droplets at you. Then there are those that stand in front of me, pull their mask down, and LICK THEIR ENVELOPE and hold it out for me to take....

Glad to hear you're doing better Jan Arie, long road back Buddy, don't rush it. Instead of seeing a shrink, come over here and spend a couple of day with me at HQ, you'll come out better in the end........

I'm on the fence about opening up. If anyone had any common sense (big ask) opening up is the right thing to do. Retrospective studies have clearly shown that lockdowns did not stem the tide in cities like NY and they brought on many other factors, not the least of which was financial destruction. I

I am truly surprised by how many Texans are following the Governor's advice. He has opened up the state, but people continue to wear mask, which he recommends. Finally, in spite of Dr. Fauci, people believe the mask saves them, not others. We are doing pretty good on our statistics here in the Lone Star. I am out at stadiums and stores and people continue to wear mask and social distance. Common sense prevails here in Texas.

That's good, Ray, but even still, it's the ones that absolutely will not that are the problem. How many of them are carriers? What do you do when they get up in your space like this? All I can do is back up away from the counter more, but even still, I still need to access my terminal and such. Figure 150 encounters a day. How do I figurel who infected me if I do get it? We had someone in my old office that was standing in line with two other people, no mask, and said she had it. The woman behind her went out the door and was telling everyone else not to go in because someone inside had Covid. The woman that said she had it, also left, and we stopped everything and cleaned every surface in the lobby, washing everything down four times.

Italy is locking down a third time. There really needed to be a united front on this across the globe, if they had learned anything from the 1918 pandemic.

The "essential workers" face this every working day. Most of the employers aren't going to help them if they get sick. They don't have paid sick leave.

I'm sure you heard about that Uber driver in SF by now, and the women that got arrested.

There's a woman here in town who's been arrested several times, and just recently again, for practicing her profession, who is HIV+.

I'm tired of the screaming me-me's on tv and radio urging people to throw caution to the wind. I used to listen to them, too, and started noticing that by the time I got home from work, I was so angry, my heart was pounding, and that the consecutive shows seemed to have the same theme, pounding it in hour by hour, every day. I decided to try listening to music on the way home instead, and noticed a huge change. No anger, no heart pounding bad enough to jump out of my chest.

I am also surprised that here in Maryland everyone in my area is following the rules. Most of Maryland is open. Yesterday was a tad scary in that being St Patty's Day, local pubs were all full! But all went well!
Yes "common sense" is the key here!

Jim, my power went off for about 36 hours during the freeze fest, and I had pipe break in the attic. I managed to get it under control in just a few minutes, but still had some flooding in the house. I went from damage control, to mop detail pretty quickly, and got things dried up in a couple of hours. Overall, the damage was not too bad, so I can't complain too much. Sorry to hear about your pool.

And since this is a picture thread, here is an Airbus doing a go-around. It wouldn't all fit in the frame.

Hi Dave,

Glad you we're there and had the chops to minimize the damage. By the time we got up that morning the pool was frozen, and nothing could be done. We did luck out as far as the house and I'm grateful for that, but the pool and the landscape that was too big to cover is another story. This weekend I'll start pulling out 20 year old shrubs and things that are not going to come back. Going to have to get inventive because my 20' of Pyracantha by the pool aren't going to come out easily. I was concocting a method of extraction as I dozed off last night, something about a Landcruiser, 100' of chain, a Sawzall and a pick axe.

Nice image of the 380!

Park Place was a Baldridge Award winner. Once they get your name, you become family. When I was a quality engineer I was the chair of our local organization for ASQ. I called them up after they won the award to see if they would come talk to our organization. They accepted and after I told them we would pay expenses, (airfare to/from Dallas-Houston, hotel and food) they told me they would take care of it. Nice people.
