Yup, in more ways than one, last year was definitely a bust in getting out to shoot any photos here, too. I may need to get off the OT list for the last two weeks of March...

Thanks everyone. I forgot to mention that picture was from the 2019 Reno Air Races. I haven't done much with the camera since then, as last year was pretty much a bust for getting out and traveling.

Nice to see some activity here, in these difficult times. I just found out that our local Spitfire “experience” flights should recommence some tine in April. So I may have something to shoot at long last. Till then here is a photo of one of our many former military buildings. Netley Hospital was a huge Victorian edifice, originally built as a military hospital. It was positioned beside Southampton Water. It was demolished in 1966 following a fire and years of neglect. All that remains is the former chaple.

I went about six months without touching my cameras due to working those wacky hours, and it's not showing any signs of letting up, either. I wear a headlamp to walk out to my car in the morning and back to the house at night to avoid getting skunked or running into raccoons and possums, or stray dogs.

Something that I have always been thankful for, and that I think makes a big difference in my business, is the fact that I enjoy the challenge of meeting and wooing new clients almost as much as I enjoy actually shooting their projects. People think that, after 40 years in a line of work, one has it made and there's not much need for pounding the streets looking for new clients, those people would be incorrect. Resting on one's laurels is a prescription for small business doom. Fast forward to the year we have just endured and the previous statement is true X10! 2020 put a huge number of people out of work/out of business, personally I spent a little time with "deer in the headlights" syndrome, but then you come to the harsh reality that you can stand there and let the freight train vaporize you, or you can figure out a way to get off the tracks and make a new plan. The plan, for me, is always to reinvent, polish skills, take advantage of advancing technology and equipment, and crawl as far as possible out on that limb. Once I faced the crushing disappointment that four decades of work and growth could very possibly end in a failing shambles because of a stupid virus, it was clear that the best course of action was to get on my knees and pray that The One who placed me on this carrier path would not let me go down in defeat. The next step was to gather all of the tools that I have been given and strike out as if it was my first day in business 4 decades ago with the goal of finding new clients and trying to figure out how to best serve my existing ones in the hobbled environment we were faced with.

I tell you this story, not with hubris, but humility. Scary doesn't begin to describe the last year or so, for everyone, and starting from square one isn't something anyone looks forward to, until you squarely face the reality of not picking yourself up and moving on. You all have been on me about retiring, or at least scaling back for some time, well I took a good look at "scaled back" starting about this time last year and, believe me, I liked the look of it even less than I thought I would, it does not fit my personality nor my personal goals. You don't have to know me very well to see that I am happiest when I am being productive, creative, and when I am overcoming whatever has been set up in the road in front of me. Hopefully The Good Lord will allow me to continue in that vein right up to the moment that He doesn't.

What precipitated this story is a call from a relatively new client. The marketing director needs me to do a corporate video next week and we were brainstorming exactly how we could pull off her vision. I pulled up their website to look at something and I was greeted with all kinds of images that we created together at the end of last year and the beginning of 2021. Working with a very creative new marketing director, we have completely changed the "look" of the company, both on the web, and in print and advertising. Everyone in the company is ecstatic about the direction the company's image is moving and very excited to see where we take it from here. Years ago a great marketing team and I did something similar for a billion dollar residential roofing material manufacturer, we zig zagged all over the country capturing their products in new and inventive ways and, in the process we changed the trajectory of a corporation that had fallen into the doldrums. Not only did we change the way their product was marketed, we put the company on the map with a presence that became the darling of their industry, pretty satisfying personally and professionally. Really, it was thinking about decades of those types of experiences and just how challenging and exciting they were, that made me realize that as long as I am vertical and have the chops, I could never give this all up.

Thought you might enjoy seeing the website one of my new clients is sporting, it's energized the company and spurred them on to create new marketing tools, which is great all around................

Bravo !!!

In a smaller, similar way I had the same choice about eleven years ago. I think it’s a bit like walking on a high wire. You have to keep on walking or get off the wire. In a tech business (or maybe any business) you can’t slow down. About the best you can do is to work as smart as you can. My choice was to get off the wire. I recognised that I could not reskill and compete with my peers, so I retired. It was the right decision for me. I totally understand your choice, and for what it’s worth I think your choice is right – at least for you. We can’t please everybody in this life – so for goodness sake – make sure you please yourself !

Oh, and given some of the more “exciting” parts of your recent history the irony of finding “an answer” doing work for a medical equipment company is ….. errrr ….. ironic.

Thanks Nick! Yes, I am much more comfortable having all those medical gizmos laying on black plexiglass, or white seamless, as opposed to stuck in my arms.....

Well I wasn't off much on my pool estimate, $11,500, plus tax. I found one guy who bought and warehoused a ton of equipment before the snowpocalypse and he is coming out on Tuesday to replace everything. Everyday I get more serious about............

So maybe it's possible when such a cold snap happens again, that you drain the equipment like some people blow out the sprinklers before winter or use some sort of insulation?
Don't know how often cold snaps like this happen, but I could save you some hard earned $$$$

Or go for option two get the Winnebago but serious I always like to get home to a house.

On the other news.
Put back by the doc to three days of 4 hours work for the next couple of weeks.
She says, that working more hours if you are feeling better then the day before is not the option.
Because she says, then you are trying to recover from the day that you have worked only to repeat it the next day so your body and mind for that matter don't get stronger.
So couple of week more of this, then i can go to 4 days of 4 hours so 2 days work one rest and 2 days of work.
And maybe some physical therapy, and maybe a talk with a psychologist so not there yet !!!

Hi Jan-Arie. Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that your recovery is underway – too slow for you no doubt – but steady my friend. Just to say, any offer of help – take it – please! Your situation is a timely reminder for us all to take this virus seriously. Over here in the UK I see some complacency creeping in. Infection rates are still high and the numbers in hospital too. Far too many thinking that vaccination is a magic bullet, so let’s just end all the lock down restrictions now and have ourselves a nice little Covid party. Grrrrrr !

Just a reminder that the seasons come and go and our lives won’t be this miserable always. (note to self as much as anything) This is the walled garden at West Dean, Sussex UK. Soft (ish) autumn light, boarders past their best, but lovely all the same.

Yeah it’s the same over here get some shots and people think it’s all fine and dandy.
They seem to forget that it’s not a guarantee that you are free from getting Covid.
It’s the same with all the people overhere that get a flu shot every year and still get the flu.

Hi Jan Arie,

This one was tricky. We have a freeze guard on the equipment that is designed to kick in at 36 degrees, and we have a very efficient heater that I would have

Wouldn't that be so great Dan?!

Glad to hear you're doing better Jan Arie, long road back Buddy, don't rush it. Instead of seeing a shrink, come over here and spend a couple of day with me at HQ, you'll come out better in the end........

I'm on the fence about opening up. If anyone had any common sense (big ask) opening up is the right thing to do. Retrospective studies have clearly shown that lockdowns did not stem the tide in cities like NY and they brought on many other factors, not the least of which was financial destruction. I winced a bit when our Governor announce that we were opening up to100% this week, but most people are still wearing masks and social distancing, businesses just have more freedom to operated we don't feel a government boot in our backs. There are still some people who want to die on the hill of mask/no mask, but really, who gives a damn? Wear a mask for a while and let's just get along, whether it's effective is really up for debate, but it's not that big a deal to put a mask on and make everyone else comfortable, we have bigger fish to fry for crying out loud. Crowded bars and restaurants just aren't a great idea at the moment, common sense people, but neither is hiding under a bed until you go blathering looney, and broke. Riddle me this Batman, the same people that are telling me I "might" be able to have a 4th of July get together with my family in my own back yard in a few months, just let 100,000 untested people walk into my country............stuff like that might cause one to do a bit of head scratching over all of this, jus sayin'.

Jim, my power went off for about 36 hours during the freeze fest, and I had pipe break in the attic. I managed to get it under control in just a few minutes, but still had some flooding in the house. I went from damage control, to mop detail pretty quickly, and got things dried up in a couple of hours. Overall, the damage was not too bad, so I can't complain too much. Sorry to hear about your pool.

And since this is a picture thread, here is an Airbus doing a go-around. It wouldn't all fit in the frame.
