Well, it looks like flying things are in a slow phase until this weekend. Here is a low earth flying subject I caught at the Temple vs Arlington-Martin Friday Night Lights. I was tracking the running back until my buffer filled at the wrong moment. The running back took to the air over a defender, I mean serious air! The buffer caught up as he was at his apogee, but the defender was on the ground to the left mostly out of frame. Heck of an athlete. Unfortunately the Temple home team lost to Arlington-Martin (who is packed with seriously large grain fed stock!).

Great works usual Ray! That's something I can say for the R5, and the 1DXIII of course, you ain't going to run out of buffer.

I have been looking at the R5 for the frame rate, ISO and focus. You have me back on the fence thinking about a 1DX III. I was going to eliminate my Nikon gear (810D, which I love, and lenses), 7D II and 5D III for an R5 and a 5DS R. Not in a hurry, but I want a seamless transition.

Give me another week with the R5 Ray. I can tell you that, other than file size (I’m admittedly spoiled there), you will absolutely love the 1DXIII, it’s perfect in every way. I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine, or my 5DSR’s but for a different reason. I’ve used the SR for all kinds of fast moving subjects and it’s right on the money, but for those on the field sequences the III cannot be beat. I’ll give the R5 a workout later this week, with RF lenses, and if it doesn’t measure up, well we see. I have twice as much in RF lenses coming compared to the body, grip and nd adapter, so I need to decide pretty quickly.

Well, I just checked B&H and I bought the 5DSR for $1499. No brainer there! I will be moving on from the Nikon after I get it...the 5DSR is backordered. I think the 1DX III will be a 2021 purchase. I guess I am going back to an all Canon lineup. Love the ease of the Nikon for the sunsets. I will miss my Nikon system and the beautiful bracketed landscapes and sunsets it captured.

I liked the D800 and then the D810 and they served me well, but when I shot the D810 side by side with the 5DSR, it was an easy choice, partially because I had so much Canon glass. You will never look back.

Had some great news arrive in the mail last week, while I was out of town on assignment.

This is my 24th cover shot! Not really crazy about the photo that the client chose for the cover shot, but as long as my name is on the check, I can be happy.

Wishing everyone a great week!

Yes, and when I travel I can take more lenses. I would take both Canon and Nikon on vacations because I only had the longer glass (>200mm) for the Canon. But then, with all that Nikon resolution you can make up for lack of lens length. Looking forward to what the 5DSR will do with the 100-400.

R5 mystery solved, the EF/RF ND adapter seems to be the culprit. That adapter is great for video (although I'm going to run some tests on it's effect on sharpness vs a good B+W VND on the lens itself) My Buddy at Competitive Camera gave me the straight adapter until my clear drop in filter gets here later this week.

I'm going out to HQ to shoot some more tests but I am fairly confident that I've found the missing piece of the puzzle. I don't think anyone else is shooting the RF-EF ND adapter at the moment because they are impossible to get, so they haven't encountered the problem that I did.

Sharp as a tack and fast as lightening!

That sounds more like it. I couldn’t believe that you felt the R5 was giving you soft pix - there had to be a gremlin somewhere because I have heard of no one else complaining of soft shots. Glad it is something as simple as that. I hope the problem is that ND filter you have, not a general problem with the drop in filters.

Thanks! Yes, I was prepared to be confronted with a heating problem in certain situations and had accepted the possibility, but the sharpness thing really had me scratching my head. Interesting, and now Canon is scrambling to figure it out. There aren't very many RF-EF/ND adapters in the wild so they are thinking that I might have discovered something. Ugh, the perks of being on the cutting edge............

Chandler got to put another 1.2 in his logbook last night because I was busy wringing out the R5. This was the view west form 500' above their little ranch................

Sounds like a good attitude for a working commercial photographer. Let someone else be the 'starving artist".

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't always strive to improve your craft, but perfection in itself doesn't put food on the plate, or a roof over your head.

You are so right Ken. Lot's of photographers get all twisted up about photo credits, sure they're a nice thing to get, but you just can't deposit them. The number of times someone has said "we'll give you a photo credit......" is incalculable, translation: "Your work isn't worth paying for......".

Uh-Oh....TOPP! Chandler's new little piece of The Lone Star, still not long enough to land on

I know for an absolute fact that I NEVER tire from looking at Nicole Kidman. Goodness, the older she gets the more beautiful. Perhaps not MA2A beautiful, but pretty close.
