For any of you who are thinking about the R% here's my update. Still think this is a great camera and happy that I have one to get to know, but as Don Littlefield told me recently, "Quite a learning curve.......!" I spent an hour or so on the phone yesterday with my Canon Buddy and he walked me through menu's and menu'e within menu's that I had no idea existed, most in the AF settings. After our discussion I went out and shot some ducks and a high school kid's soccer game, still not super confident in the autofocus.

Jim, here is a link to a UK photographer who uses TS lenses in a commercial situation. The link is his proper, hands on review of a loan kit from Canon UK. HTH

Edit for TOPP

At last I got one of these guys in some half decent light. Now all I need is a proper background and a bit more reach …….

Jim,

The name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), which is admittedly a mouthful. Most folks call it COVID-19 or coronavirus, either of which is fine (although COVID-19 is one of many coronaviruses). Interestingly, the "19" in the name refers to the fact that the virus was identified in 2019 (yes, in China), I think on December 31st, the very last day of the year. For a virus that's vast impact upon civilization has been in 2020 (and will have been, when all is said and done), it's kind of a misleading name, to be sure.

Good Morning Woody,

There are idiots everywhere and it saddens me that there are that many reports of harassment, my guess is, given the state of our media, that they are somewhat embellished, but one is too many. I find it inconceivable that anyone could blame someone for this virus based upon their race, but I find so much inconceivable these days it's difficult to keep track of it all. The virus is from China, whether released intentionally or not, depending upon what conspiracy theory you want to believe, the oppressed and abused citizens of China deserve our compassion not our ire, the conditions they live under are unthinkable. I blame the communist leadership, I blame the carelessness of the research facility, and I blame the fallen nature of mankind that we think it's even acceptable to develop crap like this. Truthfully, I admire people from the east, asian or whatever is the appropriate moniker for where they come from, They come to this wonderful last bastian of freedom, looking for a better life. They put their heads down and work hard, love their families, save their money, contribute their efforts and the good elements of their culture to our melting pot, and frankly they don't complain and burn the damn country to the ground if they don't feel like they have been treated perfectly, that is a boatload more than I can say for a lot of groups!

So, yup, like it or not, it's the "china" virus, "Wuhan", whatever, and the blame and harassment belongs squarely on the communist leadership's heads and it should be substantial. If someone blames or bothers anyone else because of this pandemic, or any other reason, they are idiots and unfortunately their is no law against that, except for God's and many have pushed that from their lives.

Welcome to our Mustang Air to Air, a melting pot like no other, and a group of some of the finest photographers, more importantly human beings, that you will ever have the pleasure of rubbing shoulders with.

Thanks Jim, you are kind to a fault. I realised the other day that I’ve not had the 100-400 L IS II on my camera for over six months! The surfers have spread out a little and the “new” location offers a westerly angle, rather than the previous south and into the high noon sun deal. Sun is lower in the sky now which helps.

Lexar just sent me an RMA for the two 128GB CF cards and said that they would issue a "fair market" refund to my PayPal account of $191.98. Fair enough, they retailed for $239.00 from B&H in 2018 when I bought them, guess they don't owe me much.........

Really, think about that, a 128GB CF card holds roughly 1900 images in a 5DSR, that's 52.7 36 exposure rolls of film. Multiply that number times $14.00 and it comes out to $738 and change. So, you're $650.00 ahead if you just filled it up and threw it away, and obviously that wouldn't be smart. So if I filled that card 100 times in three years, that's 190,000 images, 5,277 rolls of film, times $14 bucks = $73,888.88, and that's one card, what a deal. I can remember going into Competitive on a regular basis and coming out with seven or eight thousand dollars of 35, 120/220 and 4x5 film, not to mention Polaroid. Every December I'd go in and stock up to save on income tax and that stock would carry me through the first quarter of the following year. I don't miss those film bills, but the flip side is, photographers typically marked their fit and processing up by 20% to 50%, I usually did 15%, and that all went away, which was a bump to the bottom line. Still, think about the junk that isn't introduce into the environment, that aspect alone is incredible. Great times to be an image maker.

Great shot Nick! I think you'll find that taking those reflections off of the leaves will hurt the impact of that image. Look at all the detail those highlights add to your leaves. Striking!

I have long since suspended reality re: comments of any kind originating in California.......is that racist........or geographiphobic" or whatever they invent next?

Hey! My comments originate in California. Born, raised, and spent all but a couple of years here. Just don't call me a "Californian", I have as much use for "those people" as Jim does. The good thing (for me) is that significant numbers of "those people", (like locusts) are moving on to more fertile fields, such as Texas.

Jim, if you can't stand them now, how are you going to feel when they decide to change the states name from Texas, to New California? I understand that your governor was trying to increase the states economic growth, but - importing "Californian" companies, with "Californian" ideals, always sounded extremely short sighted to me. Then again they are leaving here, so that is a plus (for me).

Ah …. so that’s why the PL got “lost” in the first place. BTW, those where both taken with the nifty fifty – which on my 80D works out at about 80mm equivalent – with a close (ish) focus.

Went to the Ranger, Texas Fly-in last weekend. It was a great day! Huge crowd, over 275 airplanes and many more people. Felt like a time way back in 2019 when things were normal!

Maybe Texas needs a wall on it's Southern, Northern, and Western borders. Of course, it's probably to late for that now.

Spent a little time with James III and the R5 this afternoon. This is a scenario that I look for with the 5DSR/1DX III, soft light, wide apertures, and to make things even more perfect, the 70-200/2.8 III. Did I get some images that I'm glad I captured, yes, but this session did absolutely nothing to improve my "meh" impression of my R5. The image that you see here is a slam dunk for my SR/1DX, 100% of the time this is a tack sharp, shallow depth of field keeper and to me this is just a nice shot. Anyone who is thinking about selling a 1DXII or III or even a 5DSR in order to have an R5/R6 as their main body might want to hold that thought. Do I think something is wrong with my copy, nope, I'm still willing to blame it on technique, but the shot you see had very little motion on either end, IS ......supposedly 7 stops of it.............perfect conditions, but it's not up to my expectations in any way, shape or form.

Today the 24TSE goes on the R5 and that should at least tell me what it's sharpest image can look like. Off to capture yet another "Ceeement Pond" as Jethro would say.
