A month ago SMSall Rig announced a new "cage" design for the Canon 1DX MKIII, and the R5. I've never had a cage because none really seemed to be functional for my work. I ordered both cages, the MKIII version arrived today, very cool! I'm going to dedicate one MKIII to this set up so I can just pull it out of the case when the need arises.

I agree Elijah, and Nikon's showing was pretty anemic too.

Apparently those market share numbers are suspicious, as the reporting body has changed how they calculate them compared to last year without explaining the change. There's an article about it on bythom.com. Nikon's not as big as Canon, but it's not as bad as those numbers suggest. For example, this year's numbers include compact non interchangeable lens cameras, which is where Sony shines compared to Nikon. Hence the large change in Nikon's numbers compared to Sony.

Yeah, no matter which camera company it is, they're all having a dismal year.

Well that toppled my giro. I’m accustomed to my Texas friend doing new / cool / unknown to me - stuff. But this time ….. well, I thought that the cabin fever has finally got to the old boy. What kind of photography is this? You put the camera in a cage and then take it to the zoo? Or the dog pound? Can I have the full curtains please, nurse? Oh, and the full set of meds too please.

Regardless of the complete accuracy of the measurements, everyone knows that Nikon has been in trouble for years. And of course, Canon continues to lead. Reading reports from REAL photographers re: the R5, Canon will continue to dominate.

Right you are! I'm not a fan boy, just go with the best tool for the job, but Canon has shown themselves to be the manufacturer of that tool for me. I've spent the past couple of months researching the R5, and post release, all the owner reviews, no doubt in my mind I'm going to love the camera. I'll do my usual routine where I shoot with it for a couple of weeks and order the back up.

Hi Nick,

Yes, you wouldn't believe how great the camera feels in that rig and the perspectives that once were the territory of contortionists are now easily reached. I'm waiting for the HDMI cable that will allow me to shoot 4K/60, then I'll show you some footage. Amazingly, that cage and handle ran less than 200 bucks, then Small Rig sent me an email apologizing for the virus caused delay and attached a 30% off everything coupon.

On a positive note, my yard has never looked better, my books have never been more up to date, our cars are spotless, the hangar is squeaky clean, my equipment is superbly organized. Now it's time to move beyond this and get back to work! Looks like my clients have decided the same thing based upon my upcoming schedule. Just picked up one of the biggest names in commercial architecture as a client, and well as one of the top three healthcare companies in the world, I'm masked up and ready to go to work!

Prompted by your recent post, I took a look at the SMSmall Rig web site. It’s ever more apparent that the revolution in the stills / video / mirrorless camera market is driving the development of all sorts of stuff I could never have dreamed of. So many retail opportunities! But seriously, I can fully understand your excitement – all those new possibilities for your one man band…… Onward!

Good to see JRW III keeping a supervisory eye on pops – always keen to “help”.

Hope everyone has had a great week and is looking forward to the weekend. What a strange, strange summer, and of course, year, we've had in 2020, to say the least!

Went out to California recently and photographed three Boeing 737 interiors for a client, and I ended up also getting a few exterior shots, as well, before this bird took off for a D check.

I'll post a couple of the interior shots, next week.

Jim,

Putting out sod this time of year is a sign of optimism and endurance (and affluence because of the water bill )

I was looking through some photos and realized it has been almost a month since I picked up a camera....this is the last thing I photographed...July 24.

Busy working and of course it's tad warm in our part of the country right now...

Indeed Zane, but my friend Neil Sperry told me that I had better get on it so the roots would be well established before winter. I'm going to have to duck for cover when the water bill comes. Today I was just going to spend a couple of hours in the cool of the morning replacing sprinkler heads, I just finished up a few minutes ago. Like the Seals say, "The only easy day was yesterday".

Hi Nick,

Yes, the number of "cottage industries" that have sprung up is nothing short of amazing. SmallRig makes all of their pieces in China and understandably they are experiencing some delays. Their products are very nicely made, machines from aircraft aluminum I believe and reasonably priced. although, I'd happily pay 50% more if it meant never sending another dime to China.

I have a cage for the R5, a handle and a couple of Atomos monitor mounts in the que at SmallRig and that should about do it for a bit.

I shot some video of James this evening as he helped me with my sprinkler project. That cage set up is a game changer for my 1DX MKIII and I'm sure that it will be for the R5 as well.
