And finally some storms from this week. Wonderful color and clouds! Sorry Jim, this was done with the 6D because the 16-35 is sorta welded to that body at the moment and I wanted wide angle, ad as we all know mother nature and her light don't wait!
Sorry to bother you all with all this "non aviation" stuff, just blame Jim for prodding the bear to post so to speak.
Have fun and stay safe,
Dan
Terrific shots of rainbow and sunset (or sunrise?) over the farm, Dan! There is a small farm 5 minutes away from my house, I go there once in a while for the sunrise. It's the only remaining place nearby where I can still get a good view of sunrise. Sadly (for me) the farm was sold to a developer and the view will be gone in a couple years.
Here are a couple shots of the farm form the last couple weeks. Hope you good folks don't mind I have been posting too many non aviation related pictures. Call it COVID-19 boredom. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I often go to the same spot to watch sunrise/sunset, and take the same pictures.
Looking east from my front porch at my farm. My 24-70 just wasn't wide enough to capture the whole rainbow; this is several portrait shots merged together...
The only plus I can wildly find in this whole pandemic mess is that I've been able to keep the 600mm for way, waaaay longer than ever would have been possible in normal times. That has been a blessing and a bit of a curse, I've grown to love it so much I can't see not having it in the arsenal soooooooo...........
American Legend Aircraft is really getting some great press with the stuff from our shoot a couple of weeks ago and I'm going back over later this week for a few days to shoot some more..........

Sure I will tell Sheila about your plans nah just kidding....

I think that EF 600mm and your new R5 will make a great combo, until the RF version of the 600mm f4 comes out....
True enough Ken. The 600 will pay for itself in a very short time (during normal times), the 8K flat screen ......not so much. Now would the 8K media I'm going to be producing look cool on it, certainly, a decision for my higher end clients. That would be a pretty captivating display in one particular client's reception area.......................
I applied for the airspace waiver for an airport in East Texas a few days ago and got an interesting response. The airspace is Class G and apparently current regs allow me to fly anywhere on that airport below 400'.........with a caution to avoid air traffic. I gotta say that surprises me a bit, but I'll take it.
Interestingly, some additional information is coming out re: the Canon R5 in the form of video capture and overheating. Canon released a white paper on the camera giving stats on video recording and it seems, as one might expect, the light titanium body is not a very efficient heat sink. the camera overheats relatively quickly on a slightly warmer than standard day when shooting 4k and even more quickly shooting 8K. Recovery times are not short and it doesn't take a math whiz to figure out how long this camera will perform in the summer in Texas. Pretty disappointing after all the pre-release hype, seems like someone would have thought to put a fan in that body, or some type of heat sink.
I'm not real patient with unreliability in any arena, just won't tolerate it. last week my iPad mini lasted for about four minutes on an Inspire 2 shoot, just ridiculous. Fortunately I switched to my iPhone X and completed the assignment without a problem, but having your monitor go black in flight isn't an option for me.
Very interesting that none of the reviewers alluded to any possible problem in the heat department. Both the guys I know are in cooler climates and they did their reviews in the winter and spring, but still. 84 degree day, 20 minutes of 4K/8 minutes of 8K.....maybe............? I'll wait to see it for myself but if that's anywhere near accurate (and it's canon saying it) the R5 is not viable as a professional tool in my opinion. I can record 4k all day long at up to 240fps on the FS7, 60fps on the Z280, 5.5k on the 1DXIII up to 120fps, I need a $4,000 mirrorless brick like a hole in the head, bummer, but I figure if Canon is releasing that information now, they are trying to head off a pr nightmare by putting it all out there before new owners begin discovering it on their own. maybe my first mirrorless will be the high MP R5 sequel with less aggressive video specs.

Ya know, Jim, my thought is that if Canon REALLY wanted to get to know the real, boots on the ground scoop about their gear, they ought to retain you, with payment in advance, for your acumen as to the gear, together with your splendid commentary thereto.
You are most kind Tony, but Canon leans toward east and west coast names exponentially larger than mine for such services. Like so much of what we see these days, those "Explorers" wouldn't dream of telling Canon, in private or in public, the kind of information that I just posted. A very good friend of mine, who you would all know in an instant, was so afraid he would somehow be in a picture with a new Nikon offering that he moved to the other side of the room when I was holding it for the first time. No one wants to endanger their gravy train so it's all praise and wonder, let the chips fall where they may. Who in a million years would endorse a product that does it's job for 8 to 20 minutes and then shuts down........at 84 degrees ambient? I've always been a fan of underpromise/over deliver, if what I'm reading now is anywhere close to true my favorite camera manufacturer is going to get broiled on the web as these cameras start being delivered...............in late July/August..........December/January wouldn't cure the problem, but it would delay the deluge of complaints for a few months.
These days manufacturers have a habit of muting consumer displeasure by promising "firmware updates". I'm not a design engineer but I'm skeptical about a cooling fan update.......
Make of this what you will, three friends in two different states went to and registered at COVID testing sites late last week, sat there for hours and finally gave up and left. All three received notification today that they tested positive. Obviously this is not a hoax like some are claiming, but there is most certainly some BS being fed to the public.
