Great comparison Massimo. I’ve often wondered if those lenses are worth the investment.
Are you referring to the Zeiss primes? Well... It depends
There are many factors to consider:
- Zoom vs prime
Not all zooms are as good as the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II, out of the ones I've tried I would say Canon 70-200 f/2.8, Nikon 14-24 f/2.8, Olympus 12-40 f/2.8. I am sure there are more, but not that many
- MF vs AF
I mostly shoot static subjects, MF with Zeiss lenses and focus confirmation works pretty well for me in such scenario. Yet my fastest MF lens is f/2.0 and often I stop down a bit. I am not sure I could handle MF on a 85 mm f/1.4...
- Good lenses have their own "character", I have a love affair with Zeiss 21 mm f/2.8, I like a lot Zeiss 25 f/2.0 (and my Canon 24 mm f/2.8 stay at home most of the times). I own a Zeiss 35 mm f/2.0, it has a great reputation, but I never fell in love with it. I like Canon 35 mm f/2.0 much more
- Cost. I bought my three Zeiss lenses all second-hand. Yet they are not cheap

Lately I've started thinking about replacing my older 24-105 with either the 24-70II or the 24-70 f/4IS. I like the IS of the f/4 lens (and the price), but I keep thinking the faster lens would be better for my event photography. I do have the option of IS on the wide end with my 16-35.
I often work on static subjects in poor light and IS is usually more important than an extra stop. Yet when I traded my 24-105 for a 24-70 f/2.8 II it was a huge improvement. The 24-105 is okay, but it made me turn to my primes for the ultimate quality, 24-70 f/2.8 II belongs to another category.
Now the new RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS should give the best of both worlds, fast aperture and IS. Right now Canon seems to have great lenses on RF mount, but available cameras don't meet my needs.
I am just waiting for a competent RF body from Canon to retire my aging 5D Mk III and move to RF. It just a matter of waiting a bit more.
Question for you aviation photography experts, do you use CPL for planes in flight? I find that sometimes the glares actually make the photos more "lively", for lack of better words.

Thank you,
Douglas
The question here is, can you cope with speed of the aircraft and yet get the polarizer at the required position?

If I were to use a CPL for flying aircraft, I would just set it at a fix position based on the angle of the sun, the polarizing effect may vary depending on the position of the subject(s), there is no way it can be adjusted on a timely manner. I used a CPL for a few airshows before, to me recollection the some images look kind of "dull" without some reflection. I am wondering what folks think about this.

Thanks Massimo. I'm leaning more towards the 24-70II because I don't work with static objects that often, and I need shutter speed. I can always use the 16-35 for statics. I'll probably start looking for a good deal on a use one on B&S.
I agree that RF lens looks great. But I need a sports body, so I think I'll soldier on with EF for now.
HEY GUYS! I just started working for Delta Airlines TechOps a few months ago (moved from northeast) and have access to worlds busiest airport taxiway/runway.
Will be contributing more photos in the future. In the meantime, what is your suggestion for the budget lens mounted on my 5DIV? zoom or prime... Mostly commercial aviation... For now, my longest is the 135L
This image was the first time I shot something from this airport.
I guess it depends on what you mean by budget. The short answer is the 100-400II zoom. About $2K new, used maybe $1,500. It also works well with the 1.4xIII on the 5DIV if you want to go longer.
Welcome Elijah! I've been out on assignment so my 2 cents is a bit tardy, sorry. I think the folks here have given you great tips so far. Looking forward to having you as a part of our group and seeing your imagery!
I don't anticipate much sympathy, but I rolled in late last night from a five day gig in The Hamptons and I'm beat. Today is a regroup and catch up, then Chandler and I are off to do our annual Fort Worth Alliance Air Show early Thursday morning. We'll be over there for non-stop bop until Sunday evening.
I flew in and out of LaGuardia and was anticipating a real mess, similar to the one Chili and I endured going through Newark last month. You just never know, yes LaGuardia is in the process of completely rebuilding the airport, while operations remain in full swing, but they seem to have their ducks in a row. Rebuilding airports that are that old, combined with crazy air and road traffic flow has to be a logistical nightmare. Newark and LaGuardia currently look like Beirut during the siege, but LaGuardia somehow has figured out a way to minimize the torture, Newark, well not so much. I've rented hundreds upon hundreds of vehicles over the years, at just about every airport in the country, but I gotta say the folks at the LaGuardia Hertz operation are the warmest, most efficient group of people I've had the pleasure of working with in a long, long time. Their cars were ridiculously expensive for some reason, but the service kind of took the sting out of that.
The Hamptons, well this old Texan is very happy to be back in The Lone Star. Sure, the ocean is beautiful and some of the homes are incredible, but fighting two lane roads for hours while one creeps along at a snail's pace is just one of a number of inconveniences involved. I know there are people who are into "rustic" and I heard the term "quaint" tossed about frequently, but man, if I know there's a new, clean Marriott Courtyard, or Delta Hotel waiting for me at the end of a brutal day, I'm fine.............and there is no such thing where I was. So five days in "The Hamptons" may sound "charming"...............................
Have fun at Alliance Jim! Wish I could be there, but tomorrow I'll be waiting for my mom to come out of surgery with a new knee. Last year it my knee, this year my mom's. We're becoming a Terminator family.
Just read an article about the hotel now residing in the old TWA terminal building in NYC. Looks really cool, like stepping into a time machine and emerging in the 1960s, They even put a bar in a Connie on the ramp.

Erich...
I wish your mother the best recovery and health
Waiting to hear good news about her in the coming days.

As the guys suggested, the 100-400II is the "best" budget aviation lens, I bought it specifically for airshows, and very happy with this decision.
