My instinct says to go for the light.

Hi folks, I can use some advice. I just learned that next Thursday, Aug 24, the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, the British Red Arrows and 2 F-35s will be flying down along the Hudson River in New York in formation around 9:30 AM. I think this is a once in a life time chance to see the best of the best all together. My dilemma is, the New Jersey side will offer a spectacular view with the NYC skyline in the backdrop (if the jets are not flying too high), but the jets will be backlit, on the Manhattan side, the

I'd go for the light too. I've already got enough backlit airshow photos. My focus would to to catch the formation, where they're flying would be secondary.

Laura, Erich, Massimo, appreciate the suggestion. I will shoot from the Manhattan side to get the better light. Very excited to witness this formation.

Based upon the updated forecast for the flight time, we may not have to worry about “the light”

Will see as the date gets closer... The airshow in Atlantic City on Wednesday may be affected too.

Just saw the Red Arrows make a couple of passes over Boston Harbor. Nothing fancy. Photos when I get home from work tonight.

Good luck Douglas, looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thank you, Mark. I will see the Thunderbirds and the Red Arrows in Atlantic City on Wednesday before they perform together in NYC. Hope the weather will cooperate.

Right now it looks like we might be blessed with partly cloudy skies for the 9-10am window Thursday morning. Who knows, events like this will smother the control freak in anyone, even me....... Truth is, everyone but Thunderbird One is just playing follow the leader.

Well here's all I got, just a couple of calm passes over the Harbor. First time shooting aircraft in about 5 years I'm afraid. I miss it.

Jim, are you going to be in the air with them? I was actually wondering if Glenn was going to be flying with them, similar to the Snowbirds/Thunderbirds/Blue Angel flight. Maybe it's you and Glenn together?

Hi Mark,

They have been holding this pretty close to the vest but I guess the word is out. Yes, Glenn, Chandler and I will be hovering over The Hudson. I'm doing the cinematography and the boys are shooting stills.

Thanks Mark, it is quite an opportunity. Our Buddy Glenn is one amazing guy, tireless, talented and loyal, it's a privilege to call him my friend. Chandler is beside himself as you might imagine. Truth is, we have no idea what we'll capture, these things take on a life of their own and you just get caught in the jet wash of it all. Any hope of orchestrating something is next to impossible, Ansel's "F/8 and be there....." is in full play Hope we get something epic, but just to be there with Glenn and Chandler will be something for the log books.

Thank you Erich! MA2A will be well represented! It's going to drive me crazy not shooting a still frame but this opportunity will be over in a matter of minutes and my job is cinematography. Don't know if that internal conflict will ever go away I guess I could shoot a RED Weapon at 8K and have it all......................but be living under a bridge.

But thankfully the only thing lost was the plane that sank in the water. Definitely an OS moment though (and I don't mean Operating System)
