That MiG was my Buddy Glenn's, he logged about 20 hours in it before he left us. One of the most, if not The Most, beautiful MiG 17 restorations in existence. He would laugh about putting 300K into an airplane that would strain to sell for 100, but he wanted one bad and he didn't care.

Greetings all. I'm heading to the Joint Base Andrews show this Saturday (fingers crossed that the weather holds). I have been there and shot previously but I'd like to get some advice to hopefully get some more keepers this time around. With both the Blues and Thunderbirds there I should have plenty of opportunity
I will be shooting with a Canon 7D (Mk I) and a rented 100-400 lens (Gen 2). I will have other lenses with me as well for static displays if necessary. My questions mostly revolve around camera settings and autofocus tracking for best air show performance.
I have tweaked some of my custom function settings in an attempt to improve burst speed/buffer and autofocus performance. Specifically, I have the following settings:
C.Fn II: Image
(2) High ISO speed noise reduction - Standard
(3) Highlight tone priority - Disable
C.Fn III: Autofocus/Drive
(1) AI Servo tracking sensitivity - one click towards slow
(2) AI Servo 1st/2nd image priority - 0 (default setting)
(3) AI Servo AF tracking method - 1
Do these settings seem reasonable? Any others I should be looking at?
I'm planning on shooting in JPEG vs. RAW mostly for the burst buffer size. I can get to 90 or so with JPEG and only about 12 with RAW I think. I know RAW is better overall but I'm afraid I might miss some shots without the extended buffer. These shots are for personal use (computer screen and maybe some 8x10 prints) so they don't need to be perfect. Thoughts on this choice?
In terms of focus, would it be better to go with the regular single point or switch to the zone focusing? I haven't had any problems per se with single point AI Servo in the past but wonder if zone might be more suited to air shows?
Thanks for any advice you all can provide. ...Show more →
The weather forecast for the weekend is not looking good for Andrews area right now. I am going on Saturday. It’s a 30 minute drive from my house. I am really tempted by the performers lineup at the show in Miami on Memorial Day weekend. It the best of the 50 or so airshow I have been to. I have never seen the B-1 or the B-52 flying, saw the B-2 a couple times. The Miami show will have almost all the goodies except the F-22.
Hey Jim, that advice came from the fingertips of Rodolfo, who posted it oh... about ten years ago over on the Nikon forum. I scooped it all up and saved it to a text file cause I knew I was going to need it.

Welcome Champ!
Laura gave you very good advice, and your initial settings look like you are on the right track, good luck! Keep an eye on your preview screen and adjust accordingly. The beauty of a multi-day event is that you can look through your imagery the first night and correct anything you don't like the following days. Even the most seasoned pros like having multiple bites at the apple!
In other words, you've told Sheila that you're just gonna die with your boots on?
You have set your 50th anniversary trip dates in stone, haven't you?

In light of sprinting across the 7 decade line recently, my slowing down program is remaining a pipe dream. Had meetings with two of the largest development firms in the world yesterday where we discussed what I might be able to bring to the table for the multi-billion $$$ projects they have coming up.. Should they grace me with a nod, these developments will span the next five years and beyond, including extensive drone, still, cinematography, helicopter and my new "bird's eye" perspective system. A go ahead from either of these companies, hoping for both, would require a jump up to the Inspire 2 7s system. ...Show more →
I don't think that news comes as any surprise to Sheila Still working on our anniversary plans................uh..........which now includes a three day assignment for Kettering Health that is immovable..............................................(dives for under the bed).
Um... if that shoot for KH is part of the travel plans that include Sheila, I can show her two top notch restaurants here in town, Shen's, and Jay's.
and fie for encroaching on what should be strictly personal time...

Laura, there is an Egyptian common saying which translates to: you flip the cooking pot on its side, the girl for sure be like her mother
I do not know an equivalent in English, hope the meaning is clear.
I've got a shoot tomorrow morning that is a rare one. The event and location needs to stay under wraps until we get it all done, but I'll have some cool images to show you later tomorrow.
You got me there, Anwar, I'll have to ponder that one for a while. Maybe it's something akin to "the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree"

I like to shoot statics low (one of Moose Peterson's tips, I think). Based on my recent ease of downs to ups around the house lately, I think I'd better start some exercises. As Laura mentioned, it gets hot out there and I sure don't want to be looking for help getting up at any point during the day.
As promised ( little late), I was asked to capture an Honor Flight for a fallen Fort Worth police officer. The weather was a bit tough, but the spirit was pretty incredible............
You could carry a tripod or monopod and use it to help push off the ground (I've done it) That way your cane is disguised as photography equipment.
