Interesting question Nick! The Sony still has a number of hiccups, although it certainly is a cool camera. I did quite a bit of research on the Sony after getting my Ronin S, but it seems they have a some wrinkles to work out as delineated by even the biggest fans. I guess the Sony has a terribly clumsy menu system for starters. Jim Koepnick and I had a long conversation on this subject a few weeks ago and he warned me off of Sony mirrorless even though he shoots with them. He did say that I should go with an A9 if I was dead set on getting a Sony, but he didn't think the investment would be worthwhile for me. He thinks the autofocus is overhyped, good, but not spectacular.
The Nikon has yet to make it into the hands of the shooting public so we don't know what peccadillos it might have. That demo reel certainly made it look good, but that's a demo reel I called my guy deep in Canon this morning and left him a message. They weren't real excited when I added the D800 into my gear box, but that's the beauty of not being anyone's "Explorer" of something, I can come and go as I please and buy the best stuff, regardless of brand.
I'm not quite ready to pre-order the Nikon, but let's see what Canon says, I'm not opposed to it either....Show more →
I’m sure your right Jim. I have no axe to grind – just genuine curiosity. I’m fairly sure that Sony do the sensor for Nikon and that just got me thinking “How different can the new Nikons be, vis a vie the Sonys” ? I think you answered most of that question. The menus thing on it’s own might well swing it for time limited guys like yourself. Then on top of that, over at Lens Rental, their tare down of (I think) an A9 showed a worrying shortage of sealing on the bottom plate area. Hummmm.
Oh, and I’ve looked into my MK1, Ball, Chrystal, Nick, for the use of – and I see that at some time Mr Canon is going for the nuclear option. Sensor with big pixel count and more layers that a Photoshop session, new lens mount, flash system with a photographic logic (unlike the present engineering solution), and so on. Of course your going to have to wait until after the 90D / 7D MKIII has it’s day in the sun.
This was a result of playing around with exposures during a very bright moonlit night. Wish I had known about the 500 rule to minimise star trails but there's always next time
Ended up looking a bit surreal

A million-dollar Apple computer?
Let the bidding begin
Would you pay close to a million dollars for a 38-year-old computer?
That’s what it might take to win the auction next month of one of the rarest pieces of technology on the planet: one of the first 200 computers made by a company called Apple.
Two Boston auction companies, RR Auction and Invaluable, are holding the auction of the Apple 1 computer, a piece of technology so crude it doesn’t come in a casing. Only 200 were ever made, and fewer than 80 survive. And this one still works.
“It’s in a category all its own,” said Rob Weisberg, chief executive of Invaluable, an online auction service based in Allston. The auction is set for Sept. 25 at the WeWork coworking facility on Portland Street in Boston.

Apple is great but nothing about it is cheap!
Speaking of the MBPro, hard to believe, but as I am beginning some of my first Photoshop edits, I ieloeiev this screen is even more dynamic than the predecessor, just breathtaking. Adobe CC Apps open in the blink of an eye and Final Cut Pro X/Davinci Resolve 15 edits are roughly six times faster than they were on my 2015 MBPro. So far, I'm pretty pumped about it's performance.
Today's project, an absolutely beautiful outdoor living space designed and built by my client..................

James, I think that is a fine piece of work. FWIW I don’t worry about star trails. Yes, I know that for some folks in some circumstances it’s a no no, but I take the view that showing the passage of time is one of the things that is special about photography.
I have an ongoing addiction to taking pictures of unoccupied benches. This one has been in the oven for many years. I find it very tricky to balance between making moonlit images dark enough to be believable, and light enough to not block up. It’s during this process that one realises just what a fantastic thing our human vision system is. I find my judgement clouded by emotional engagement..... So ….... too light, too dark... or just right? Lighten the gamma or darken it? Sorry, no colour version this time – I’m seeing this as a B&W jobbie.
Now that is a bench with perfect placement! Got some samples of it a little darker to compare?

I've not posted for a bit as lots going on. My daughter and son-in-law were living on a Greek island for a year but two weeks ago their 2 yr old had another episode of a viral illness followed by a hypoglycaemic collapse and had to airlifted to Athens (and she didn't even know what the helicopter was) Now safely back in the UK but their house is rented out for another 6 months and they have no car!!! Anyway, I at last managed to draw breath - here's another one from RIAT
Thanks Lady Jo. Forget my stuff – your Drone trails are super cool. An original composite art form,
no less! I wonder how that might look as a flush edged print, mounted under non reflective glass?
Scary times, hope you've got Orange Juice handy in case it's needed to boost her blood sugar levels up again. I'm guessing they're staying with you until their house can be reclaimed from the tenants?

Or until they can find a short-term let. They have an appointment with the Inherited Metabolic Disease team at Evangelina Hospital for further investigation
