Interesting question Nick! The Sony still has a number of hiccups, although it certainly is a cool camera. I did quite a bit of research on the Sony after getting my Ronin S, but it seems they have a some wrinkles to work out as delineated by even the biggest fans. I guess the Sony has a terribly clumsy menu system for starters. Jim Koepnick and I had a long conversation on this subject a few weeks ago and he warned me off of Sony mirrorless even though he shoots with them. He did say that I should go with an A9 if I was dead set on getting a Sony, but he didn't think the investment would be worthwhile for me. He thinks the autofocus is overhyped, good, but not spectacular.
The Nikon has yet to make it into the hands of the shooting public so we don't know what peccadillos it might have. That demo reel certainly made it look good, but that's a demo reel I called my guy deep in Canon this morning and left him a message. They weren't real excited when I added the D800 into my gear box, but that's the beauty of not being anyone's "Explorer" of something, I can come and go as I please and buy the best stuff, regardless of brand.
I'm not quite ready to pre-order the Nikon, but let's see what Canon says, I'm not opposed to it either.
I’m sure your right Jim. I have no axe to grind – just genuine curiosity. I’m fairly sure that Sony do the sensor for Nikon and that just got me thinking “How different can the new Nikons be, vis a vie the Sonys” ? I think you answered most of that question. The menus thing on it’s own might well swing it for time limited guys like yourself. Then on top of that, over at Lens Rental, their tare down of (I think) an A9 showed a worrying shortage of sealing on the bottom plate area. Hummmm.
Oh, and I’ve looked into my MKI, Ball, Chrystal, Nick, for the use of – and I see that at some time Mr Canon is going for the nuclear option. Sensor with big pixel count with more layers that a Photoshop session, new lens mount, flash system with a photographic logic (unlike the present engineering solution), and so on. Of course your going to have to wait until after the 90D / 7D MKIII has it’s day in the sun.
Edit for TOPP
Well - it is a flying machine.....
