While I was shooting the skyscapes last night I tried a handheld panoramic series just for grins. Shutter speed on these four frames was .5 second, which isn't challenging the Hasselblad IBIS in the least, at f/16/iso 100. The panoramic end product is 404.27MB with a pixel dimension of 17273 x 8142.
Just got back from Columbus, Ohio. I bought ticket for both Friday and Saturday. Decided not to stay for the Saturday show. The show was good, the F-4 didn't come. It was quite a drive to see the show (370 miles one way). The Thunderbirds flew at 3:00, and the Snowbirds at 4:30. The light was still very strong . By the time the F-35A flew at about 7:30, the light was very nice but not quite sunset kind of light. It was cool to see the P-38 again. Will I travel that far (time, gas and hotel) to see a show with similar lineup like this? Probably not. On June 24th i will be going to DC to shoot the flyover at 7:00 PM, B-2, F-16 and F-35As, On June 25th they will have the B-52, F-18, F-15 and F-35C. These are just flyover but the light on them should be beautiful.

I mentioned this before Douglas but POTUS is hinting that the new "Air Force One" may make an appearance at one of these events or on the 4th of July! Hope you are there!

No F-4 at the Columbus show. I got all excited when Fighterjets Inc. said they were ready but it was cancelled by the show organizer. All in all it was a very good show, just not the distance I normally drive for a show. The light when the F-35 and P-38 flew around 8:00 was really nice. The firework show started at about 9:00 when it was still very bright as I was walking to the parking lot. Maybe the show organizer forgot the sun sets pretty late this time of the year.
For the DC flyover this coming Wed and Thur, I am still trying to decide where to shoot from. I am assuming they are fling over the Mall, so I don't want to be at the Mall to shoot their bellies. From the Netherlands Carillon next to the Arlington Cemetery, the light direction is great but it's too far away even for 600mm lens, I shot the flyover from there last year so I know. I think a more balanced location maybe the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, I won't be looking up at the bellies and it's a lot closer than the Netherlands Carillon. I am guessing I will be shooting up a 35-45 degree angle.
Some shots from our friends up north. Two of their jets didn't make it to the show on time. I saw the Snowbirds several times before, maybe 8 or 9 years ago. Great team. People were appreciative that they came.

3rd installment: WWII reenactment at the Columbus show. If you look at the first picture carefully, you can see the casings popping out from the rifle. The P-51 and the B-25 were attacking the "German" ground targets. I didn't have a wide angle lens with me to photograph the environmental actions so I just took pix of the P-51 and the B-25.

Your images do 90% of the marketing Douglas. I wouldn't be saying this if it wasn't the truth. The quality of your compositions is one thing, but your images just have a different "feel" to them, very unique. A simple letter of introduction to the air show promoters with a link to a dozen of your best images (glad I am not the one that has to choose this 12), should get you up close credentials to any show you choose.
The quality of your work, paired with your dedication to the craft is an unbeatable combination. Let me know if you ever need me to put in a good word for you, happy to do it.

Thank you very much, Jim! I will certainly take up your offer when needed. It means more than you think! I would have never even thought about getting a media pass if not for the 200mm lens restriction for the general public at the MCAS Cherry Point show.

Thank you Jon! The shows in Ca always seem to have fantastic lineups. I am tempted by the S.F. Fleet Week show and Sac. sunset show on the same weekend this year. Will have to see if I can get away for some little fun.

I'm working on an ad campaign for Qatar Cargo and the X2DII captured some great images today........... This image was taken at 2:40 in the afternoon as the aircraft returned from the paint shop. I anguished over whether it should be shot from west looking east, of vice- versa. Ultimately I decided on shooting it from the east, the sun position was almost directly overhead with a slight bias to the west. I factored in the aircraft colors and the Hasselblad's incredible dynamic range and rolled the dice. We will be shooting a dusk static shot of it in the near future, should be spectacular.I am so glad that I went out on a limb and bought the Hasselblad, it has proven to be even more than I had hoped.

Thank you Dan! I did go to watch the flyover in DC last evening. I was at the Navy Merchant Marine Memorial on the south side of the Potomac River. Very good location with clear view, the big drawback is even for 800mm, the fighter jets appeared pretty small. The problem with shooting from the north side of the river closer to the "show center" is you will be pretty much shooting up in their bellies.
The B-2 flew as a single ship, then flew with 4 F-35As, The F-35s flew twice, the F-16s just once. I will be going back there again this afternoon for the flyover this evening. Will work on the pix tomorrow.
