What type of plane is this?

Well, I am confused. I was all set to say it was a C-130 J until I looked up the S/N and the owning unit. The operational unit is the Delaware Air National Guard 166th Operations Group. Their page says "The group flies the C-130 H2.5 model cargo transport aircraft." However, I am confused by the 8 bladed composite props which are used on the C-130J. The radome appears to me to be a conventional housing for the radar antenna.

I was also trying to search for the reason for the bulge on the side of the aircraft in front of the rear empennage.

Time to get Jan-Aire involved as he has good access to the most recent builds for aircraft S/Ns.

All of you guys with teens and younger, and Grandchildren probably 8 and above, take them to "The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever", you will enjoy it, and them. Probably the best Christmas movie I have ever seen.

Some of the "H" models, this Delaware ANG was one, received the upgrades to avionics, engines, new design props. They remain with the "H" designation. A "J" model would come with all that, and more, from the factory. I see this airframe was recognized for reaching 10,000 hours! Wow.

Fantastic Douglas! So, after cropping, how large are those files typically? Canon is sending me an RF800/5.6 to test (boy do they have my number Ideally I would like to have the trio of the RF400/2.8, my existing RF600/4, and possibly the 800/5.6. I am curious to see what the RF800/5.6 does on the R5II. I'm thinking the 800 on the C400, in just the right circumstances, might produce something pretty spectacular. We'll see soon. Are you coming back for Barksdale in March, your turn to buy dinner.........

Thank you Jim! For this particular sequence, the eagle was relatively "close", compared to where most of the actions occur. Just to give you an idea, the first shot below is the uncropped version of the second shot in the sequence posted. The third picture is the uncropped version of one of the frames in a short sequence of an eagle catching the fish dropped by the eagle he was chasing, I would say I cropped away 15/16 of the frame to get picture 4, 5 and 6. Normally I don't keep such files, just too far away, but this is a fun sequence so I played with it. Sometimes the resulted JPEG files could be less than 2 MP from the 50 MP Sony A1.

Ref. Barksdale, I would be happy to buy dinner again if I go but I am likely going to Sun N Fun for an A2A event on April 3th Thursday and 4th, Friday, so Barksdale is a no go for me this time. Usually I don't travel that far for airshows unless the lineup is extraordinary.. The published lineup for Barksdale next year doesn't look like it warrants such a long trip...Most of my airshow trips are day trips in Maryland, NJ, NY, PA and VA. The reason I travelled to Sacramento for the show this year where I met Bill and Jeff was the lineup was outstanding and it was a sunset show, if it were a day time show, I wouldn't have bothered.

I bought the Sony 300 f2.8 GM some months ago, incredibly light and compact, and incredibly SHARP even with the 2X TC. I know folks who sold their Sony 600 F4 because the 300+2XTC is so much lighter and almost as good (but at f5.6). But it doesn't get me to 840mm, so for now my 600 F4 +1.4 TC still has a place. I wish Sony would make a light 800mm like the Nikon 800 PF. I would get one in a heart beat and sell the 600 f4, since the 1.4X TC is attached to the 600 f4 95% of the time anyway.

The prize I got for using 1/4000 second in this shot is you can count the number of blades. In all seriousness, thanks for looking into this.

Good Morning Douglas! Thanks for the explanation on the crop. I figured Barksdale was a one off coincidence for you, we'll just have t meet up somewhere closer to you.I've been invited to S'N'F but I don't think that I can fit it in, weebeesee. I was invited to Batavia this year but had a conflict, might try to hit that in '25. Batavia is put on by Doreen Hilliard and her husband, my Larry Grace and Kevin Hong shot the inaugural show thi year and had a great time, and they have a dusk show.

Thanks Jeff. When I tried looking up the serial number all I could find was the H 2.5 upgrade, but it only added some cockpit glass and a flushing toilet as major upgrades, nothing about the RR engines and props. Interesting they kept the "H" designation with such a major upgrade.

Now, about that unusual blister on the fuselage...

Great captures, Dan! I want to wait for a couple inches of snow over the ANC before the wreaths are removed.

I was at Conowingo this past Thursday, two big birds flew overhead, I didn't have time to adjust the shutter speed, so no prop. motion to speak of.. Here is an eagle fishing sequence from the trip when the light was good.

I read that those "drones" were found over Maryland in recent days....

Fantastic photography Douglas! Unbelievable sharpness, exposures, detail and a whole lot more!!!

My ridiculous posts above are crap Douglas! I just wanted members to see that honoring the fallen is a far bigger event than the media would have us believe!
Yes snow and ANC goes hand-in-hand brother!

The C130 was my airborne training "ride"!

It was also "thee" plane that reinforced the Marines, and my unit, at Khe Sahn. Drag chutes and all!
Thanks!

About the bulging blister on the C-130 H2.5 fuselage, it appears to be a "Directional Infrared Counter Measures" system.

166th Airlift Wing C-130 H2.5
The eight-bladed propellers will deliver more power and efficiency while reducing maintenance. Due to increased thrust for takeoff and climb-out, they are also helpful in cold weather and arctic operations.
From the 133rd airlift wing page.

It seems that this C130 has some sort of countermeasures suite but I cant find anything on it at the moment.
Current serial is 93-1561

1561 (MSN 382-5365). On December 19, 2017 departed from 156th Airlift Squadron/145th Airlift Wing North Carolina ANG to
158th Airlift Squadron/165th Airlift Wing Georgia ANG.

No further updated info on that site.

Well….. It’s been some time…….

I’ve been “away” for most of the year. Nothing unusual – just standard 74 year old stuff.
Photography has had to take a back seat – done almost none for 18 months.
Close vision is poor at the moment and is pending the OK to get new glasses.
I hope this Christmas card looks OK.

This was taken years ago and I have no idea how the shadow from the tripod is not visible.
The golden light and green grass growing in a tidal area caught my eye.

To everyone celebrating Christmas – have a wonderful time with family and friends.
To everybody – wishing you a peaceful and healthy New Year.
