Jim, thanks for the words of advice, for both going for the R5II and avoiding the R glass right away! There is only so many expenditures my CFO will allow in-quarter! Also, I sat on the porch all night waiting for your friend to deliver the R5 I, he never showed! Funny.
On a topical note here are a few 1DX captures from this week in RDU.
Some runway work left a load of dust on 5L, which made a JetBlue landing a lesson in airflow.
An Air Canada Embraer 175 climbing out.
My favorite airliner of all time.
Jim and all, again, thanks for the sage advice. It is always appreciated.

Ouch Bill. Rubbing in the no sales tax in Oregon. Living in Vancouver we tend to make bigger purchases across the river in Oregon to avoid it. Can't avoid it on subscriptions and Amazon though.
I have some sad news, Nan Moses, Rob's wife, texted me today to tell me that Rob had a stroke in August and passed away last week. Those of you who attended the Alliance events probably met Rob and Nan, they were inseparable, "best friends" as Nan would characterize their relationship.
I called Nan when I received her text and, understandably, she was pretty broken up. She's going to let me know about the plans for his services. She did ask if I might help her market Rob's Piper Arrow, which I'll be happy to do.

So instead of chasing planes like I normally do; today was a special event day. The Union Pacific Big Boy made its way back through Fort Worth and headed to Durant, OK and further on up into OK.
The crowds watching this train were unbelievable.
I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to photograph it. It capped off a great weekend!

Sorry to hear that, Jim. Was he the Rob who posted here once in a while? Sometimes I mix names up.
Hi Douglas, yes, that was Rob. Nice guy, Navy Submariner, he'll have full military honors at his service. Rob and Nan were inseparable, they showed up for every air show. Nan always said she was only there to guard Rob's gear, but she was really there because she loved being with him, and vice versa. Apparently Rob was not going to recover from the stroke and he made it clear to Nan that he did not want the existence that lay before them so, no extra measures were taken and his body just shut down. Jimmy Buffett was right, "Some of its magic, some of it's tragic..........." enjoy every minute of every day, it's a gift.

Bill it is always available. Over the years I've had a lot of fun pushing Jim out of his comfort zone. Most of his calls he already knows the answer but wants to be reassured. Putting an aerial camera like today's drones have in the hands of a talented photographer leaves them awestruck as they discover the possibilities. I'm actually down in your part of the world until Friday. We have a 101 year old widow in Grants Pass we have been keeping an eye on for almost 50 years. She cut the cake at our wedding 48 years ago. We've had her on hospice this last week and yesterday afternoon she finally went home to be with the Lord. We had the RV parked on the Rogue for a few days and I threw the drone out over the river for a quick peek.

There was a huge tv show about the "Big Boy" and its stay in Texas a few days ago Jay! Never gets this far East!
Well done!!
Dan
Thanks Dan, she is definitely in a better place now. When our quality of life deteriorates like hers did it is time to go Home.
The area is very familiar to us. I was part of the crew that built Applegate Dam from 1978-1980. Loved the Applegate Valley. Had a buddy with a M5-235 Maule we would fly out of his field there. Once we dodged the big oak tree mid field we were home free. Love Crater Lake too.
Busy 'fall' weekend around DFW, if you count 95° weather as 'fall'
Spent a while at UT Arlington watching their annual Formula SAE autocross event.
University engineering students doing their thing in a practical way.
Then on Sunday I also did some train chasing. Always amazing to see the big steam on the rails!
Then Sunday night the wife and I went out west of town to darker skies to catch Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas in the western sky right after sunset.
Very cool!
I probably didn't mention this, but a few weeks ago I was droning one of my construction sites and the last perspective that I take is from the parking lot flute of a food services company. I've been meaning to stop by the reception desk to thank them for letting me use their parking lot as a vantage point. I had planned on asking them if they would like some shots of their facility, on the house and a thank you. I pulled into a space and got the drone out and I noticed a young guy walking out of the building, I walked over to meet him and introduced myself, turns out that he was the CEO.We chatted a bit as I flew my last perspective and told him of my plans to drop by when I was done. He was very excited about getting shots of the building, so we walked around the property and shot stills and video, which I processed quickly and sent over to him.
Just got an email from him, he shared our work with the owner of the company, Ray will get a kick out of this, a Mr. McLane, who loved the shots and is working up a list of their properties around Texas that he would like me to capture, plus his new aircraft! So, "some" good deeds not only go unpunished, they turn out pretty darn nice!
And, I have a hunch that Ray and I will be able to have a nice dinner together in the near future in Temple!
Local boy Drayton has done well. I talked to one of his pilots a couple of years ago at the airport. He told me Drayton is a stickler for promptness. He doesn't want you to show up 15 minutes early or one second late. One second late gets the door shut in your face. There has been a Falcon (I think) flying around like they are doing check rides. I guess that is his new ride?
