In honor of this thread’s theme - the sweet looking and sweet sounding P-51’s at the California International Airshow (not really sure how the “International” applies).

Well my Canon Guys/camera supplier outdid themselves again, the C400 is waiting for me to pick it up. Looking forward to getting to know that camera.

Dear Bill,

Thank you for your kind words, they mean a great deal. You all mean a lot to me, we've become such good friends over the years and I love hearing how everyone is doing and what you are excited about. Love watching you all grow your talent and stretch to the next level in the craft. My challenge, as you have pointed out, is that I am constantly juggling a lot of blessings, two adult children, nine grandchildren and a great grandchild, a pretty demanding little photography enterprise and, my greatest gift, aside from God's Grace, Sheila. Poor Sheila , she gets what's left over, but somehow she is the glue that holds all of this together. Know that when I shoot something that I'm proud of, or learn a new trick of the trade, you all are the first people I think of and I share it here as soon as I can.

I'm sure that I am cutting a corner somewhere, but I do my level best to give my very best to each of the above mentioned blessings, and will continue to until they close the lid on me. I guess the point of this diatribe is, don't ever doubt how important you all are to me.

Today was a typically fun day, jumped out of bed, slammed down all my "stay alive" pills, and headed to the shower. I glanced out the kitchen window to see who was on the bird feeder, but my attention went to the 20' tree limb that fell across the driveway during the night. So, quick shower, chain saw so I could get out of the driveway. I headed to the first of two drone assignments, which I supposedly had authorizations loaded for, but the drone kept telling me "cannot fly". I gave up, went to the second site, same deal, so I went to one of my client's offices at Perot Field, pulled up wifi and re-downloaded my permissions, then backtracked to the sites and shot them. Funny how a simple morning that you are looking forward to can turn into a game of whackamo. Bottom line, everything is edited and in Dropbox waiting for the respective client to download in the am, so it all goes into the win column.

Oh, I'm helping the video team at church tweak their video lighting technique and I borrowed a set of LED light panels from my supplier and an LED light tube. We are going to play with those for a couple of hours tomorrow afternoon. I'll give you the cliff notes when I see how good these tools are.

Headed to my pillow to see what excitement awaits tomorrow. I wish you all a great night's sleep and a wonderful Wednesday.

Thanks Douglas, Jim and Bill.

Douglas ... I'm not sure why I can not get perfect focus, hand held, at 1/320 with 200-600 using stabilizer Mode2. I just don't like the Sony stabilization in general. Yes, I spray enough shots looking for one good one, but nope. Any thoughts?

That 200-600 was a battle for me but it was really hot out the two months I had it.
I bought a really nice monopod to help me out but ya can't always use one if planes are flying all around in different directions.

It's still hot here, so maybe it's related. It doesn't seem like motion blur but maybe more like soft focus. I used a monopod in the past but like you said, it's sometimes difficult tracking maneuvers.

Hi Jeff, IMO, 1/320 for a fast moving subject is still too slow unless you have exceptional panning skill, which I don't. I shoot Mustang usually at 1/150 second, I may get 1 out of 50 that's decent That's why you need to do air to air, you will get 1 out of 50 that's not sharp..

I am not sure how much stabilization can help with moving subjects, other than stabilizing the EVF. Getting sharp prop. is really a combination of panning skill and luck.

Hi Jeff,

The guys are steering you in the right direction, it is challenging for sure. Our latest technology helps, high frame rate more than anything else. Douglas is correct, panning skills, just get in sync with that passing aircraft, but there are other factors as well, like if the aircraft is rolling, or pulling to climb, all those motions add complexity to capturing the subject sharply. The ideal groove for me on a prop aircraft pass is around 125th, maybe even 1/80th if I am having a lucky day. Some of the faster turning smaller aerobatic aircraft will give you a nice disc at 125 to 160th, just depend on the power setting. Jet's are a piece of cake obviously. All the guys who have shot Alliance with me will tell you that I have tried everything, monopods, Wimberly Heads, everything, and I end up detaching them and tossing them on the golf cart. They are just too cumbersome and I have found them, for me, to be no help at all.

I'm anxious to shoot a show with the "II" at 30fps, that should certainly up the keeper rate when shooting fast passes and opposing crosses. Don't get discouraged, delete to softies and revel in the occasional victory!

After a hectic week, I am hanging around home to oversee some arborilogical work today. You will be happy to know that I am beginning to realize my limitations, and the painful price that I pay for ignoring/pushing them. The check will be painful, but it won't last for a week like the other pain does.................

Douglas, Jim

Thanks for the input. I usually start at 1/320 to at least not get a frozen prop. If time permits, I then drop down lower throughout the pass. Better panning skills are definitely what's needed. In my Nikon days, I could use the lens panning stabilization mode to get a higher hit rate. It does not seem to help, and maybe hurts, with the Sony 200-600 and even the new 300. I need to play with turning off stabilization and practicing my panning skills.

Jim,

I just took out 6 big Bottle Brush trees, but they were nothing close to the sequoia's you're doing.

They do! This was a 50' tall White Ash that was on the decline and I had visions of it ending up in our dining room. The big branch on the driveway earlier in the week was just the nudge I needed to take care of it once and for all.

Hi Jeff,

I love trees, they are beautiful, until they aren't........... The crew did a wonderful job and left my yard immaculate, and the additional sunlight will be good for everything else that is trying to grow.

Jim, does the Canon 5RII have some caveats in achieving the 30 FPS like the Sony A1? For the A1 the shutter speed needs to be at least 1/250 second. I don't know what the FPS I get when I shoot at 1/125. For the money, the Canon R5II is unbeatable.
