No. ACR and LR can.

p.2 #2 · Canon G9 Anyone?

I've had one since October and the more I use it, the more I like it. It works for low light and I don't find the noise at 400 ISO objectionable; in fact it's far less noticeable than what I got from 400 speed film many years ago.

Here's a night shot at 400 ISO @ f2.8 and 1/10 second, handheld. The IS is very good. I bought it primarily to take along on business trips and it's come in handy, both after hours and for documentation at customer sites.

Unfortunately, DPP won't recognize G9 files; it's for dSLRs only. Just as unfortunately, Apple Aperture doesn't recognize them either, although I found a hack the allows Aperture to recognize G9 DNG files, which is how this was processed.

Now, as mentioned before, if it only went to 28mm on the wide end...

Oh, one more thing. As you can see in the image, the distortion at the wide end is just a bit too much.

Think the Mayo Brothers ever get a bit chilly? The temperature was right about 0ºF. This might have helped cut down on the noise a bit, to be honest.

I am a working photojournalist and bought a G9 a few weeks ago as a take-everywhere camera. I shot a few images at a fire and a car crash and was amazed at the results (considering that my workhorse is a Nikon D2h). It's a gem.

I'm really surprised at the ISO 400 results above...the initial reviews sure didn't hint that they would be as good as the examples posted here. Thanks.

The 28 mm wide end of the overpriced Pro1 spoiled me as a 35mm equiv. just doesn't cut it. I even got the SD 800 IS for my wife for the same reason... 28 mm on the short end.

Too bad they can't mate a shorter version of the Pro1's L lens to a G-style body with a swivel LCD. Maybe the G10 will just be a 28~105 equiv. I'd trade the long end of the G9 for a 28 wide in a flash. I'll wait until then.

I have the wide adapter for the G-2, just never seemed to carry the lens. The lens adapter has never been off the body...I use it as a dual purpose lens shade/protector.

I like my G9 a lot. It feels a lot more 'modern' than my prevous Canon compacts (G2, G5, G6, S50 S70, Pro1) and with Lightroom and RAW it produces excellent results. It's also so much smaller than the other G series and NO lens cap!

If it had a 28mm equiv wide end it would be almost perfect.

Good Evening,
If Canon listens to it's customer's, then the G10 will still have 12MP, but will start at 28mm, still have RAW and probably an articulating 3.0" LCD
Have a good evening,
Jim...

Just for laughs go to Amazon and do a search for the Pro1. There are new ones listed. The laugh comes when you see the price.

No...DPP does not open G9 files.

RAW Developer 1.7.1 (and now 1.7.2) opens G9 files and so does Lightroom, latest version.

There's also an Adobe Camera Raw update for opening G9 and 40D files.

Well there's a sucker born every minute...or so the man said.

I liked it a lot...still have it in fact...and $300-400 used seems realistic. But $1875 brand new borders on insane. Though some went for $900 new in 2003 and that wasn't much less unreasonable.

I only carry 1 dSLR on vacations and maybe 2-4 lenses up to 105 mm....but the Pro1 is always in my kit...just in case something poops out. The IQ on that little thing is very good (at or below ISO 200.) Even did the Oshkosh AirVenture with it just weeks before the 20D came out. With MF it did quite well as the DOF is forever.

Let me know when you get your new one!

Alan, a couple of tips--you can set the contrast for your LCD down in the left hand menu (func./set button, scroll down to colors, or MY Colors (or whatever its called--not sure of name of menu on left either LOL) and choose 'custom colors and set contrast down). I set mine on either 'neutral' or 'custom' and adjust colors, sharpening, etc. (just for LCD-I shoot in RAW).

I can use the VF--sort of---but bought a Voightlander 35mm VF (external that slides into the hot shoe--making the flash not available but I don't use an onboard flash anyhow). Pricey, but I like using the camera better--hard to come from a DSLR with a VF and use an LCD for me.

I bought an OPtech wrist strap (not like the ones for DSLRs) and find I don't use it (whereas I do use the E1 wrist strap on my 5D all the time). Some of us have added the small metal grip piece on the front that makes handling very nice--not the same as a wrist strap of course.

If your glasses are polarized, you will have great difficult seeing the LCD. You mentioned they were tinted--so polarization may not be a factor at all--but thought I'd mention it.

Have fun with it. I've had one since the week they came out and enjoy shooting with it--if you have a DSLR you will find above ISO400 quite noisy but with shooting RAW and judicious use of an NR, you will have usable shots (and with good exposures at that ISO, that will help).
