I've got my RMA number - I'm afraid that despite all the good things on this camera, it's just not reliable in the areas where I want/need to use it.

That's too bad, Tommy.
However, I am glad to see that you are about to deal with the problem effectively.

The 5D II and MkIII (N) are just around the corner, relatively speaking.

Care to share your sources on that?

I wish I didn't have to do it - the Mk III has incredible speed and agility. The feature set is superb, it focuses in very dark situations, and it has just a bit better noise capability at high ISO.

But after putting 1000 rounds through it, I've come to the conclusion that my copy just wasn't going to be reliable at focusing on distant objects. I could see it when I shot moving cars in Servo, and I could see it on stationary targets. I shot about 350 today just testing.

Maybe I'm being a bit too critical after all the problems others have had, but it doesn't seem to better my 5D in this aspect and that should not be so.

Tom, I think you need to look at things critically and not feel guilty about doing so. After all, it is called an Auto Focus System, not an Out of Focus System. For the money you paid, you have every right to expect that it will work properly.

Over here in Holland we have a third party repair center. I'm pretty satisfied the way they handle everthing.

That would be ROFA Repair, right?

No, ROFA doesn't do pro cams, it's ETBASS in Roosendaal.

btw Chris, did you had a chance to talk to a service rep at ETBASS about your MIII probs? If so, do you care to share his name? I'm in need of a definate fix myself now. It's been in for repair twice now, and it "seems" your cam is "fixed"?

ETB is Canon's premier / official service partner in Holland, though i prefer ROFA myself.
Too bad i'm heading for ETB to drop off my MKIII for checkup this week

I've been to ETBass (I never heard of ROFA).
They don't let you talk with the reps.

With my long lenses (400DO and 500) everything seems ok (One-shot AND AI-Servo AF).
I still have to check the shorter ranges.

Well I don't even own a 1D III and last night I had a nightmare where I and dozens of other people I saw were running around madly trying to verify whether our camera worked properly. One guy in my dream had a setup where he spent two whole days making notes and testing his camera. I found myself shooting anything that moved using AI servo and high speed continuous. Every where I went there were frantic 1D III owners. Now what does that tell you, apart from the fact I'm insane?

If I'm now having bad dreams and I don't have the camera, how much of a nervous wreck would I be if I did actually lay down $5500 (yes and that's a gray price).

I wouldn't expect the 1D3 to be better than the 5D in one-shot focus mode. Both are excellent.

It should be better in AI-Servo, though . . but it's not like the 5D is bad.

It's both servo and one-shot to which I'm referring. I apologize for not being very descriptive.

I've run well over 1000 shots through the 1D3, and I've compared it with my 5D and 40D repeatedly - in most respects, the 1D3 is superior. But in Servo and rapid-fire as well as single shot/oneshot, it didn't jump ahead of the other two (and in fact, produced fewer "keepers" than the 5D in Servo, but the shooting situation was different so I couldn't consider that conclusive). Basically, it had problems obtaining proper focus near infinity. It would be fine maybe 2 out of 3, but that's not really acceptable for stationary subjects. Those misses showed up in both servo and one-shot (actually, bad focus was very consistent in servo/rapid fire). It even seemed as though it was focusing on a branch or object well away from the single active focus point. Weird behavior.

I played around with all the custom functions, and even tried micro-adjustment but could not produce consistent results with distant subjects.

I agree. In one-shot, my 5D is excellent..

Maybe you would be free? And Happy?
Truth is sometimes less scarier than dreams.

On a more serious note:
It is my belief that the newer cameras are quite good. I am still getting used to mine, lots of things to re-learn. And most of my unsharp photos can be attributed to user error.

Of course there seem to be bad cameras around, no doubt about that. But there are good cameras out there too.

Kind of like this guy's?

"I have 2 MKIII's. One is a 522XXX serial # bought in June of 2007. The other is a Blue Dot that I purchased in November, 2007. Up until recently I had been preaching that this was the BEST camera that I had ever used. Saturday..."

Honestly, this camera I have now could easily be used by many without encountering problems that would be considered out of the ordinary, especially for those new to the 1-Series. For those who use it in ways that tend to exacerbate the AF issues, it can be a real problem. It's this aspect of the problem with the newer bodies that makes me nervous about how/whether Canon will resolve this issue, once and for all...

I just got official word that my camera is going to be swapped out and I hope to pick it up tomorrow. While I appreciate Canon doing this, I am convinced that it would not have happened without the intervention of my dealer who has really gone to bat for me.

Not only did I get a better price than I would have gotten at B&H at the time I bought the camera but this is a prime example of why buying locally and supporting the merchants who will support you is so important. A huge thank you goes out to Allen of Allen's Camera in Levittown, Pa.. If anybody is looking for a dealer that really works for their customers then look no further. These are great folks to deal with and this is only one example of why.
