Today I brought all my gear to the repair center for calibration.
It took them all day to do this and I collected my gear at the end of the day.
I did some quick tests with my 1DMkIII + 400DO and I made burst of 20-30 pictures of cyclist and cars.
And guess what!!! 95% in focus (25% in the past)
This looks very good, this weekend I'm out in the field to give it a real test.
So far it looks very promissing.

Chris glad you have the EOSfun again! Spend the money you wanted to invest in the D3 in an 1Ds again. The 1DsIII fits much better in your system than a Nikon D3 and it will more than double your EOSfun!

which leads me to believe that they not only replaced the sub-mirror stopper, but also the entire sub-mirror assembly(?). is this what people are seeing in their documentation?
No, that is one single part, the submirror stopper.

Does that mean those lenses no longer work well on other bodies?

I bet they simply mirco adjusted all the lenses. If this is so, I guess they expect everyone with a probleme to do the same?
I already offered to send 7 of my lenses in and they balked.

yeah.. funny.. every time you buy a new lens that works fine on your other bodies, you'll have to all of a sudden have to send it and your Mark III body in for "adjustment". That philosophy drives me crazy. Certainly, doesn't sound like an inexpensive nor prudent methodology. Cost to send in expensive, heavy lenses insured certainly isn't cheap.

My main problem was AI-servo not one-shot.
So I don't know what calibratng lenses can do for this. But at least everything is calibrated.

I really hope that every thing works as well as the 400 DO is but make sure to check any zooms you might have at both the tele and wide ends carefully.

I give up haha...I can only laugh now
Canon Customer relations had me send my MKIII and 70-200 into Irvine and promised it would get tested and looked over in detail. Said they would calibrate my lens for free also...They got the body and lens yesterday and called today and they are completed already again with 1 day turnaround. Asked what was repaired and they said nothing the tech just cleaned them and that everything is working. They didn't even calibrate my lens...
And this is the 3rd time my MKIII has been sent in.....Cmon now.....what the...

Well I sent my M3 and 400 2.8 in and they got it today. I find that it is sharper on the left side or lower in portrait and so they had me send both in. Gosh I hope they don't just "checked firmware and clean sensor" and slap it on the butt and send it on its way.

This is just so wrong on so many different levels. Try avoiding Big Milt's Weapon Emporium as there are probably better ways to handle the problem though no come immediately to mind.

That's exactly what they have been doing to mine! They have updated firmware and cleaned the sensor 3 time snow...Be diff if they were actually uploading updated firmware each time!
I wonder though if they are actually replacing parts or doing something to the bodies and just saying they cleaned it and updated firmware to hide any problems they won't admit?

well, so far so good. just got my 1d3 back from the canon mississauga service center. did some ai-servo tests on static high-contrast subjects. rotated the focus ring between each shot... it's looking promising. even if using ai-servo on static subjects is frowned upon .
it remains to be seen how my repaired 1d3 handles in real-world scenarios, with varying temperature/ light level conditions. despite all the junk, i'm hopelessly optimistic

I have been doing the same thing since it's not only dark outside but we're having a snowstorm as well! No outdoor shooting now!
Anyway, it's doing quite well. I've been experimenting with activating the surrounding AF points, but I don't think that is very useful when shooting static subjects from a tripod!
In fact, activating the surrounding points might have a negative effect on shooting stationary objects. I had a couple of shots where the AF kept making micro-adjustments while they were activated, but I haven't seen that at all when using just one focus point. Perhaps the camera is anticipating movement.

Well, we have a sunny day today so I ran about 350 shots through the 1D3. Sadly, I've found that as I shoot near infinity, I get inconsistent focus. Sometimes, it's spot on, other times, it's off. Sometimes, it seems as though it locked focus on something that isn't anywhere near the active focus point.
I tried 3 different lenses with similar results. This is consistent in Servo and one-shot, rapid-fire and single-shot. I can hit the focus button in servo on a tripod, looking at a stationary object and the focus scale will show a different distance position at times. Just very inconsistent.
It also really seems to struggle with dark objects with a bright background.
I've got my RMA number - I'm afraid that despite all the good things on this camera, it's just not reliable in the areas where I want/need to use it.
