Can anyone inform us how it works in AI focus when tracking fast objects? Or just the focusing in general. How close to the 1D MKII is it?

40D users:
how "sharp" are the pics straight from raw
tack sharp: 40D would have weak AA-filter like 5D
or
"normally" sharp: 40D would have slightly stronger AA-filter like 20D

Please be warned that if you put Hi ISO noise reduction on, you multi-shot available will drop from 17 to 6 if you are in RAW. I saw some on DPREVIEW fretting over the lower count.

That would make sense. I believe it works by taking your shot and then a second shot without opening the shutter and then basically uses whats not black on that shot to work out where the noise is. So effectively two shots and extra processing so you'd expect the rate to at least halve.

Sorry, Jeff, I would like to defend myself in response to joekraft's flame (there are some more hands on results towards the end of the post).

Why did I not post full pictures taken with the camera?
1. Because there were already a bunch of test shots on dpreview
2. Because I believe that a simple test shot does not say much. So many things interfere with the "best possible" image a camera can deliver, ie. exposure, subject, lighting, weather conditions, lens used, camera shake, etc. Heck, you can take really crap pictures with a 1Ds, too!
3. I felt that basic noise comparison charts are more useful for any potential buyers at this stage, as noise is mostly independent of subject matter

Do I own the camera at all?
I have been reading FM for a long time and I finally joined this forum because I thought I can now give something back with an early review of the new 40D. Why would I lie? I have better things to do than spending afternoons faking test charts and making up shutter sounds in the sound studio I don't have.

joekraft, I sent you a PM with the original picture I took for my charts. You can check the EXIF if you still believe this is fishy. You said that 98% percent of people would post test shots first. Well, I am proud to announce that I am among those other 2% for reasons stated above.

---

And to make this post worthwhile for those who are interested, I have uploaded a noise reduction comparison at ISO 3200 between:
- 40D original
- 40D + internal NR
- 40D + Neat Image (from JPG, set at 55%)
- 40D + Lightroom (from JPG, Luminance set at 40, Colour at 30)

Neat Image is best, I believe, although sharpness suffers a bit.

Here is the file, hope it helps: http://www.youswap.com/index.php?download_id=89ba368a-a995-102a-94f2-000b6a3d2c0b

It appears to lose more detail with the Neat Image NR. Good job.

Max, my apologies. I wasn't trying to start a flame war. I probably could have done this differently. I thought it was possible that someone was having us on, no more than that.

Thanks Max, I totally agree with your 1., 2. and 3. The noise and noise reduction are the most important IMHO to look at.
Noise is very similiar to my 20D. I wish it was better, but that's life.

I've had mine on order from Amazon since they made it available for preorder. Originally, it was to ship Sept. 20. I received an e-mail yesterday saying they were available early and mine would be shipped Tuesday the 4th.

I ordered it with the 28-135 lens (cost $200 extra for a $400 lens) which I'll put on my 20D and give to my daughter. I'm not giving up any of my "L" lenses!

Can't wait to try it out and compare it to my 5D.

I am interested to know whether the 40D sensor is less sensitive than the 30D sensor, as is that of the 400D. This can be tested by anyone with a 40D and 30D, shooting shots of the same scene.

Bummer! I just checked their site and mine still shows shipping on the 4th. Seems like a big delay to Oct.

A little subjective observation.

Taking pictures in the garden this morning, I "think" it looks about 1/3 stop under exposed from my 20D. Not a big deal if it is. I will do some side by side stuff and try to post later.

I too ordered from amazon and have had all kinds of changes in the shipping and delivery dates....currently my account at amazon says the camera is being readied for shipment and the order cannot be changed or canceled...that has i nthe past indicated that the camera was about to ship so i have my fingers crossed...may times in the past i have literally received my shipping notification after the camera was delivered from amazon so who knows?...we will see shortly but my best guess is that they are readying orders to be shipped out today or tuesday after the holiday..just a guess

Okay. If possible please please PLEASE put them both on a tripod, and use them both to shoot the same light-controlled scene (i.e. indoors etc.), and see whether you need a slower shutter speed on the 40D for the equivalent exposure. Thanks a lot.

Hello.

Forgive me that I haven't had a chance to read this entire thread yet.

I just got back from my first outing with my 40D (upgraded from 20D)

I am a rookie so the pictures arent up the standards around here but here is a few if anyone wants to see more samples.

LOOK HERE

All shots are with a 100-400L F4.5 - F5.6 IS.

I did do some processing on these.

So far, I am very happy with the upgrade. It its much better then my 20D. It shoots faster and the buffer works much better. If I counted right, I can get 18 shots in RAW before the buffer stalls. My 20D was only about 8 or 9. The shutter is also WAY quiter then the 20D. The color seams alot more accurate then the 20D as well ( I have only used standard picture style so far ).

Request: Could someone test the outer focusing points in terms of focusing accuracy? It would be nice to be able to use these points without wondering if they will really be accurate or not (ala 20d).

Check out these test shots, the 40D pictures also look about 1/3 stop under exposed compared to the 20D:

http://rolandlim.wordpress.com/2007/08/30/canon-40d-vs-20d-high-iso-test/

I believe the Rebel XTi does the same thing. I've heard people explain that the XTi tends to underexpose a bit because you can brighten the picture through post-processing and bring out the details. On the other hand, if a picture is over-exposed you will permanently lose the details.

I don't know the truth to the under-exposure theory but am curious to find out.
