Some people just don't understand that AF requires a minimum level of light...and don't learn to MF...it's much more effective, considering the alternative (AF hunting)...

I'm not sure if this has been covered before, but the AWB on my 40D seems to be totally off taking pics outside, compared to my 400D. It records it way too blue. Setting the the WB to shade or overcast records well though.
Anyone else having this problem??
I have noticed that 40D AWB shots in daylight conditions are generally bluer than reference shots (against my WB systems). It is a noticable difference.
Well, the bottom line is that my 30D works but the 40D doesn't in some situations that I need.

I recieved and installed my Ef-D focusing screen. It has grid lines to help with alignment (panos, etc.). Installation is very easy and quick. Just push the release button and the screen holder drops down, swap out screens, and close. It is fast enough that you can swap screens out as part of a setup for a given shoot.
I'm going to give myself a few days to get used to the grid lines and see how they affect my shooting. The grid lines are very thin. A fraction of the width of the AF indicators.
If you order the extra screens, the instructions warn you not to touch them. They include a tool that you use for all screen handling. The screen comes with a nice case that holds the screen and your screen handling tool. Very nice.
My 40D is more like to underexpose than over, as the 20D would do the opposite. I'm finding more shadows darker than I like but I am new to this and will keep hitting at it.
I love the camera though.
I'm going to do some lens swapping this weekend.

I'm going to do some lens swapping this weekend.
The under-exposures (EV -1/3 to -2/3) were all shot with my 17-55 f/2.8 IS & 40D.
I went with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS & 1.4xII extender and none of the frames did as with the 17-55.
I'm going to slap the kit, 28-135 on and test again. I may have to send the 17-55 in for a look but not until I shoot some more.
I've been just shooting around the house but I just always loose confidence. I can trust my 1DII and 350D that the exposure will be spot on, but this one is eather ok or underexposed, never over.
I am going back and forth. I am about to go shoot again with the 17-55. I just read the manual pdf, page 162 of 196, C.fn IV-5. States the setting must match the focus correction matches the respective screen. Hmmm.
I guess I need to shoot fresh, swap screens back and shoot again.

My 40D is underexposing when comparing shots to my 350D. Not by a lot but still enough to catch my attention!
How about you guys? Could you guys with 40D and 350D check your copies? (and indicate which settings you guys are using).
Thanks,
Sam
So far, the 40D is actually exposing correctly for me. My 350D was permanently set on minus one third stop exposure adjust. Sometimes up to two-thirds or full stop.
It may be a question of perception or experience (I'm not a pro, but a weekend shooter) but the 40D is giving me much better results right out of the gates than the 350D ever did.
I think it really varies by camera. I had a 350D that metered spot on with a sekonic 758 meter, my 30D over exposed by 1/3rd of a stop. I haven't tested my 40D with a meter yet but it looks to be close to spot on.
Actually I've found the 40D ambient exposures are a little more accurate than my 20D and 10D, both of which tended to underexpose a bit. The 40D nails it most of he time. Also flash is much more accurate. Unlike the 10D/20D, I hardly need to touch FEC.
I always set the exposure +1/3 or 2/3 and always have on every canon body I have owned. I usually try to push my histogram as far to the right as possible though.
I've done some research (well checked out some other forums) and I'm noticing that most people have to bump up +1/3 Exposure compensation on their 40Ds (some even 2/3).
Maybe we are just not used to this new metering? (A lot people complained about the 400D metering when it came out, that it underexposed too)
What you guys think?
I did a side-by-side comparison with the 350D and noticed that the 350D used a slower shutter speed (1/160 instead of the 40D's 1/200). Also another question: Does Exposure Compensation (lets say +1/3) increase grain?
