I don't actually have much time to do any testing (as i am going to go traveling next week) but will provide details on what i find nifty compared to my 30D (as i own a 30 & 40 now)
picked up mine at lunchtime. build quality is significantly better than the 20D - no more .3mm gaps between panels that you can see copper bits through....
If you are in the "Basic" shooting modes with presents (Macro, Full Auto, Landscape, Night Portrait, No Flash), setting ISO to Auto will result in automatic settings between 100-800.
If you are in Sports, setting ISO to Auto will result in automatic settings between 400-800.
If you are in Portrait, setting ISO to Auto will fix it at 100.
---
If you are in P, Av, or A-DEP, setting ISO to Auto will result in automatic settings between 400-800 and if overexposure may occur, as low as 100.
In Tv, setting ISO to Auto will result in automatic setting of 400, but can go up and down to 100-800 if over/underexposure would occur.
In M, setting ISO to Auto will fix it at 400.
With flash on, setting ISO to Auto will fix it at 400, but can also go down to 100 if need be.

Can you just tell us if there is any noticeable difference with viewfinder 30D v 40D
I was with a friend who got one last night (the store here in Hong Kong sold out its initial allocation of 27 in less than 5 days just on word of mouth). The control and menu layout is now more similar to the 1D mk 3 (though not the same) which will make it easier to use the 40D as a backup or to upgrade down the road.
I would be interested in seeing samples of high ISO images. I hope the 40D can come close to the Mk 3 (in spite of the much smaller pixels).

PLEASE
I wanted to try both cameras up to my eye.. The 40D does have a brighter view finder.. which you would suspect.. Not as bright as the 5D (but that is just from my memory of trying a friends 5)
Now that does not sound very good, compared to the Auto ISO capabilities Nikon or Pentax offer. Looks like some artificial crippling to give room for "improvement" for the 50D.
What means ISO 400 only in M mode Auto ISO in M mode should be: I choose exposure time and f-stop, the camera chooses an ISO setting to achieve correct exposure. How can that work if it can choose ISO 400 only

Hi, brunobarolo, you have a valid point there. No idea why it won't choose the ISO for you in M Mode if set on AUTO. Maybe they think you would always set you ISO manually, too, and never use AUTO...
I am hoping someone will do some AI servo testing soon. Given that this is supposed to be a baby 1dm3 but WITHOUT benefit of more than 1 center sensor, I would like to see how it does for sports/smaller wildlife. Any enlightenment from an actual owner would be great.

Well 1D3 will not AF while in live view mode
Actually, it will do essentially the same thing the 40D will, you just have to hit one additional button. I would expect Canon to align their functions here in firmware. With the MIII, you need to his the Select button before hitting autofocus. Given that you have to wait for the mirror to flip up, this doesn't really take any more time to do than the 40D method, just slightly less convenient.
Any chance of posting some larger images from the 40D at ISO1600 and ISO3200. This is what I'm most interested in seeing... the comparison chart is so small its hard to really see the amount of noise.

Looks good to me
looks good to me too.
Being JPGs, I'd imagine these have had some noise reduction in camera. What I'd really like to see is an unprocessed RAW taken at 3200 ISO then converted straight to TIF (since I don't have a RAW converter for the 40D just yet -- and then see what Noise Ninja etc can do with it. Based on what I saw here, I'd guess it would be entirely usable. Many thanks.
Can anyone with a 40D tell me how big th resulting TIF files are in pixel dimensions in 8-bit mode? You can check on the Image size dialog in Photoshop.
Pete, the maximum pixel dimensions are 3888 x 2592, regardless of the bit mode (which only affects file size). Cannot check the RAW file size, as my RAW editor does not support it yet.

Is the viewfinder physically larger or just magnified? The only reference I've seen to the viewfinder said it was brighter. Is it larger than the 20D?
