dpreview ISO3200 sample

Do you know if that camera has noise reduction turned on or off?

Was not my camera, but I'm almost positive I had him turn it off in the CF, reason being I think there are better noise reduction tools in PP software.

Sorry if they look worse, but they are right out of the camera, no work what so ever done to them, that is what I would want to see if I were buying the camera, I can work on the shots some and make them look like ISO400 or better, but that is not what we want to see...

Also, keep in mind these were shot wide open at f2.8 with a 24-70L lens.

first picture is just awful. Maybe it's just me,but If I wouldn't know better,I'd say it's ISO 6400. I checked some online photos and they don't look better than 20D's shots. Some look worse. It's true though, print results are all we need.

First shot is overexposed some in camera.

Here's a couple straight out of camera except for resizing. Both taken with 400mm f5.6 @ 3200 ISO. No PS adjustments of any kind.

Hersch-
Is the in-camera High ISO noise reduction on or off on those? It maybe my eyes, but does the pic of the fly seem a little bit soft? The 400 f/5.6 is a sharp lens for sure but if noise reduction is on it MAY soften the image a bit.

Noise reduction was off. I will try some with it on later. Just got the camera this morning.

The Fed Ex guy showed up rather late this afternoon with my new 40D so I didn't have much time to take many snaps as the sun was setting fast. Here are a couple of sunflower shots close to home. Lens used for all of these was the 24-105L.

Did not use highlight tone priority on this one:

http://forestmage.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p890363950-3.jpg

This shot is perhaps more interesting. 15 second long exposure, long exposure NR off, highlight tone priority on, ISO 200. I also posted this shot in the abstract forum.

Initial impressions of the camera are very favorable. The viewfinder is nice and large and the camera feels great in the hand. Live view seems very responsive and I actually think the relatively low rez LCD looks pretty darn good, indoors and out. Looking forward to doing some higher ISO shots tomorrow.

Should have added to the above that I shot these fine level JPG as ACR won't process the 40D raw files as of yet.

Does anyone know if the screen on the 40D is the exact same size as another camera? I want to buy an InvisiShield for the 40D i've ordered, but they dont have the 40D listed yet.

Is it the same screen as the XTI maybe?

Matt

Matt, The screen is definitely larger than the one on my 30D which I think is the same as your XTI. (3" rather than 2.5"). I would wait for the Invisishield.

I thought I I the first one in jersey to get one..Paid $1245 for it..Not complaining Paid 2600 for 60D ..1500 for 10D and 1400 fot 20D so this is a bargain.. It is a beast..big and heafty..and it sis built like a tank.... put the battery pack from the 20D on it no problems.. The spot meter is great..It is fast and the LCD is awsome.. The live view...if you are shooting a prom or kids in a studio..then its a great tool..for normal shooting never going to use it... the image is beautiful and full of detail.. very smooth.. I brought the shapness up +2 and the contrast and satuation to -2.. This gives me a little more leadway in the heel and toe of the image..Setting "K" on 5800 is perfect with the 580EX... I am shooting two weeding this week end..The 20D will stay in the case..I will update you FMers next week...

I hope Jeff doesn't consider this idle chat...but could the wonderful people who post the hands-on reviews tell us which camera they are upgrading from? For example, does "built like a tank" mean compared to an XT or compared to a 20D. Thanks.

Hi Matt, you'll need to wait for the exact fit as the 40D has a 3" LCD but also a black border around the LCD, meaning that to cover the border as well you can't just use any 3" shield.

I recall someone mentioning in the forums that the outer layer of the LCD is very cheap to replace. Perhaps someone else can verify that. Invisibleshield might not be necessary. I do have it on my current XTi though.

Or compared to an actual tank (as tanks have imagining systems)

Just trying to give you some idle chatter cover.........

(Jeff's not here. He had to suspend his own account for a day due to too many O.T. posts)

Just got mine this afternoon. Got home late so no pictures yet.
I have figured out the menu/special funtions/custom settings stuff.

Please be warned that if you put Hi ISO noise reduction on, you multi-shot available will drop from 17 to 6 if you are in RAW. I saw some on DPREVIEW fretting over the lower count.

The other thing that has taken a little work to figure out is the separation of AF from shutter button. I was used to the 20D which is basically the same as a 1DMkII, on special function 4(1 or 3). Well there are multiple functions dealing with this, the AF-ON button, etc. I think I have it the way I want, but will not post my settings til I really understand what I did

The other nice thing, which is no big deal is a quick user register of menu items you want to access often. You basically pick up to 6 from a long list to show in the last menu tab.

Overall I like how it handles. Doesn't feel too much different from 20D, which is fine with me.

I played with live view a bit. Seems like a neet feature. I don't think there is a way to get a live histogram. If anyone figures that out, let me know.

I will do some shooting tomorrow

Later
Dan

Got my 40D home, opened the box, charged the battery, and the camera wouldn't turn on. =(

Has anyone else had this happen?

I read the manual carefully and can't figure out why the camera won't turn on.

OK, figured out how to get histogram in live view.
Just use the info button. May have to press it twice, but there it is.
You can have either just "brightness" or color histograms

Cheers

Have you tried it with another battery?
