Gave my new 40D a run yesterday and very impressed.
AI servo working well with my 300/2.8 and 500F4 nailing incoming targets well.
Shutter sound very close to my 1DMK3.
Overall huge improvement on my now retired 20D.
REally happy.

Well I picked up my 40D today, had 20 minutes to use it so far. In the hand it seems a huge leap from my old trusty 300D.

My only problem is that I have been contacted by the loacl AFL association who want me to shoot their Football Grand Finals - tomorrow (3 grades, starting with Juniors at 8.30 am).

I really won't have time to learn how best to use it to its full potential before then, so any tips would be real helpfull. I am especially looking for guidance in the areas of metering and AF modes

The only thing I read about on the 40D (don't have one yet) is it may seem to expose a tad darker, but yet preserve highlights better.
Let us know. Take it a snap a few on a break in the action to compare?

Mine was delivered yesterday, I hope to get out and try it today but it's pouring rain right now.

I bit the bullet today and bought a 40D.

Haven't had a chance to have a real good play with it yet, But will take it out this weekend and test it against my 20D.

Now how do I change my username!

I updated my tests on autofocus tracking and low light autofocus. The 40D tracking autofocus significantly outperforms the 20D. Low light autofocus is also improved greatly (on a par with my 1D mark II). ISO 1600 image quality is better as others have noted.

How about low light one shot AF speed and accuracy 40D vs 1Dmk2 if using peripheral AF points??

AI servo for certain, which your 300D didn't have.

One thing I find kind of annoying with the 40D is the menu. I hate how you have to use the small control dial to change between categories, Unlike the 20D where you could just use the thumb control wheel to cycle through all the settings.

Sounds like an excellent reason to test that weather sealing for us all

For those that don't have the camera yet, here's some closeup pictures of the 40D weatherproofing[ - you might be a bit disappointed if you were thinking it was going to be rubber seals/gaskets with 100% coverage.

While I love the 6.5 FPS and burst depth (I get 50 JPEGS with my (slow) Sandisk Ultra 2 card), as others have said, that drops considerably if you enable Noice Reduction (CFII.2). I'm only able to squeeze off 7 shots at high-speed before it slows to about a shot/second.

I did an impromptu test on my 40D and was able to shoot 95 fine jpeg's before the buffer filled up. Memory card was a lexar professional 4GB 133x speed Wa card.

I've seen that in the other thread, interesting, and dissapointing. I am curious if the buttons on the camera are sealed. We'll have to wait for that though I bet. Partial sealing is at least better than no sealing. Can someone compare it to the sealing on the D200?

I just got to play with one at the local store and it was very impressive. The viewfinder is a massive improvement over the previous 1.6x bodies. And the shutter sound is very nice. AF in the dim store lighting was a definate step up using the 24-70 compared to the 30D they had.

They sold their last one today or I would have bought it.

Yup, that's pretty much the extent of weather proofing on the 40D. I spoke with an EOS specialist yesterday at the Canon CPS Expo in Calgary and apparently the 40D has a most sophisticated center AF sensor (double cross type) than the 1series mark3. Also, it was designed to be more temperature resistant then the 1series mark 3 AF chips.

How is the LCD brightness on the 40d at the default setting? I went to a shop here in Tokyo today and played with two different 40ds and the LCD brightness at default seemed a bit dark compared to the histogram. It could have just been the store environment or something else, but just wanted to confirm with those who have the 40d.

In bright sunlight it's hard to see at the default setting... if you turn it up all the way, it gets better... I think you still have to shade it a little if you really want to see it well on a bright sunny day... But I find this to be true with ALL color LCD displays...
