Hi Bonnie I have had the exact same dialog with canon, as they have my camera but have kept pretty tight lipped about whats going on. I usually get a e-mail and dialog right offf the bat, not this time though. Three phone calls have gotten me friendly people with know answers and can't even have them e-mail me an acknowledgment..
The good news is they keep verbally saying that its been on the tech's bench being worked on for over a week, If I get the camera back and the once in awhile out of focus shot for no reason disappears I will thank Canon profusely. I am thinking through conversations that they don't want a mass hysteria syndrome in which they get all the cameras back , even the ones that are working fine.
A lot of you seem to be mentioning focusing issues as in it being a general problem to the camera itself. Focusing above f4 seems to be about 100% accurate for me, are there bodies out there that are having trouble with AI focus even above f4?
Mine is greatly improved at f4. in AI SERVO. can anyone explain the out of focus at f2.8, and all in focus at f4 while using AI Servo?

I have not had any problems with F 4 and higher. I will however experiment a little more with 2.8 and report back.
First it is not a problem with all cameras, Even at F4 and below so it seems you have a perfectly working camera. Mine will have problems even above f4 or even f5.6 , my understanding is its more pronounced at below F4.
Just got mine today. I have played around with some of the custom functions to inprove AF accuracy in AI servo, and things seem to be going fine. Happy so far. Mine came with firmware 1.1 installed. It's a SN 533xxx , and it's taking nice shots so far. Maybe I'm not as picky as some, but I'm quite happy with its performace over my 12 hours of ownership
For the record, I just purchased mine from Kenmore Camera, who is receiving shipments. Mine is a 533xxx serial #, and it was one of 3 they received late in the week (Thurs or Friday), and they had received 3 earlier in the week (past Tuesday). So I can tell you for a fact that us here in Seattle are getting them. Interestingly, maybe there's some sort of irregularity in distribution, as I had been on the Glazer's Camera waiting list for some time, and they report that the cameras are "trickling in" at a lower rate (although maybe Glazers demand supercedes the supply more).

Being picky shouldn't factor into anyone's level of satisfaction with the camera. If you had a properly functioning 1-series camera before this one, you've got a benchmark. Otherwise it might be more difficult to know what to expect. My old 20D focused better than my 1DIII, though, on days when the Beatles would try to convince me that "it's alright."
Apologies if this has been asked..............but i was wondering if anyone is getting good 'still' shots with their MK3 & having trouble with their AL Servo, I seem to get excellent sharp shots of still [ or nearly still] subjects but can't seem to get anything sharp when tracking a bird etc in Al servo ..............if anyone has a link to a question similar to this please let me know & I will delete this post, thanks
If I'm not mistaken, this is a subject that has been discussed ad infinitum. Here's one link, in this case to the poll that's stickied to the top of this Canon-mount SLRs forum, entitled "MKIII Have AF Issues?" I don't think any problems with one-shot focus have been reported, but some users report problems with AI Servo. Are you new to 1-series AF? or are you comparing what your MKIII is doing to what you were able to get from a previous 1-series body?
Russ there have actually been several reports of trouble with one shot AF as well. Those could of course be unrelated to the more general issue — or not.
Do not despair, Martin. Canon seems to be working on a firmware fix, tet's hope it is true . Mine happened to be as good as my 1Ds Mark II, one-shot shots are right on the money and AI seems to be within tolerance, as well.
Thanks guys, I'm hoping the 1.1.1 firmware that's coming out in Sep will do the trick..............
Russ.....I had a 1Ds MKII that was infintaley better at Al servo than my MK3, so lets hope that Canon get's there in the end
Martin...Agreed! I just imagine this would be a very difficult situation for a person for whom the MKIII is their first 1-series body. It'd be so hard to know whether problems are with the camera or the process of learning how to use a very different AF system. Clearly not the issue in your case.
Well, I finally feel confident enough to say that my 1DMk3 has no AF problem on at least STATIONARY subjects, under different lightings, Al Servo or One Shot AF, Single Shot Drive or H/L Drive, and with 3 of my prime lenses (300f2.8IS, 500f4IS and 135L).
Since shooting a MOVING target involves too many variables, even though my current experience is almost all positive, I still need to do a lot more extensive real world shooting before I have enough confident to say yes or no.
It seems like it will be another month or two before I can cast my vote.
This is my first 1 series, but I have had 10d, 20d, 30d and currently a 5D. I have no focus problems with the short end of my lens. 24-105 performs marvelously, 50 1.4 performs wonderfully, 70-200 ok up to around 160mm, this is where my problems start. My 200L my 300L and my 400L are not very good. 5 out of 10 OOF. I thought that it might be me and my shakey hands, but even on tripod at the longer distances I still get OOF pics. It is now in NJ being looked at...........I sure hope that there is a "silent fix" cus I love this camera. When the pics are good they are stupendous. On par with my 5D for clarity, color and sharpness.
