p.1 #1 · •Poll v3.1: MkIII have AF issues?

Due to the changing nature of the 1D MkIII's AF issues, I wanted an opportunity to get more detailed data. (Also, due to a numbering snafu, I had to re-start the poll after 36 votes; sorry! Note the change in format of the table, as well; thanks Nill.)

First of all: If you do not yet know if your camera has problems (i.e. you suspect it could, but not sure), DO NOT VOTE! May I suggest that myself (and other members) will occasionally report (daily?) the results in the thread (hopefully with screengrabs, to make it easy).

Secondly, if you are sure you have problems, please make a quick post as to the nature of them (i.e. AI Servo vs. One-Shot, lenses, etc.). If you have had your camera looked at by Canon, please report what they fixed, and if it did/did not help.

Thirdly, please try not to vote if you don't know yet, just wait it out and the data will be more meaningful. Let's try to keep this thread for detailed 'AF Issues' information, and keep the 'conversations' going in the other thread. Thanks!

Regards,

Jeff

[Note the link to the second poll.]

PS: Unless you have some significant input, please don't make posts that your camera works; we can see that in the data. Thanks!

508xx, with 1.1.0, and still the same confused AF in servo and bright light (70-200LIS/2.8). No problem whatsoever in dim light, and solid about as my 1Ds2 with One Shot.

And I voted wrong (505xxx instead 505-509xxx), sorry.

Mine is as advertised. I have done running shots and numerous birds in flight shots using 45 focus points as well as single centre focus points with great success.Works fine with one shot mode as well. Only thing is, it is winter here and I have not been able to test it in hot days yet. I will have to wait for spring to arrive

One thing too, I have not fiddled with any custom settings nor micro focus adjustments on any of my lenses. I have tested with 500F4 and 300f2.8 lenses. So that also eliminates issues raised about lenses with f2.8 and F4

526xxx and 531xxx

Everything works as advertised

Edit: Oh, forgot to mention; both cameras came loaded with firmware 1.1.0 from Canon.

504XXX - best focusing Canon DSLR I have ever owned.

I predict RG will never say the 1DMKIII focuses as well as his 1DMKIIn.

How about for those having more than one 1D Mark III
I have one with 526xxx and another with 531xxx, but I can only vote once

I haven't done any real scientific testing, not enough time, but I sense an inconsistency in AF, especially in bright light, most especially in back light! And all I do is single shot stuff. 519xxx.

511xxx

Definitely AI Servo issue, even after Canon installed 1.0.9.
They didn't do anything else, btw, except clean the sensor and reset the CFs

Still same problems!
I do not use One Shot, so no opinion on that.
45 points does not work as well as the MarkII, better luck with one point only, no extension. As long as the small point is INSIDE the bird, it's fast and accurate. Any movement that puts the little square even partly out of the subject, AF jumps and looses focus.

I can ONLY speak for my camera though!

Like I said in another thread, the big concern is that some people are reporting problems a month or two after their camera worked fine. It appears that even if your camera is working fine now that it might not down the road.

I have had mine for about 2 months now using mainly for soccer. The only thing I noticed when I was in Europe was it jumping to the banner ads that line the field if the subject was close to them and I was at a distance. This did not happen all the time and I had it on center + the two expansions L&R. Other than that it is fast but I wonder if the expansion is causing it. My next tournament I am turning it off and actually going to factory defaults to see how it does.

What is the single shot problem if someone can say in a nut shell. Also what would be the best way or set up to test?

Last option is "I don't plan on owning a MkIII; show me the results."

Hummmm.........

I do not own one, finitely plan to own one but still want to see the results....

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

That's why we're posting the results in the thread periodically, so people who expect to be in a position to vote in the reasonably near future can see the results without having to "waste" their votes.

There needs to be an option for "I certainly had problems, sent it in for repair, have it back now...and while it seems to be fine, want more time with the repaired camera to be sure."

I would call that a yes vote, with the additional explication to go in the accompanying post.
