Not full frame but very promising! I know you crazy people love your Nikon and are ok with the noise performances but it's nice to hear that it will be even lower!

lower noise? sheesh i'm a lucky guy that i've allready invested in realgrain (from imagenomic). When there is less noise i will just have to add more myself

Well, with all my respect I have to say I cannot disagree more.
I believe for sport and news photographs, that would make full sense to develop a FF 12mp which could handle high ISO better than Canon, (although yes this is true Canon has been leading the way for years on that chapter). 12mp on FF that makes really large pixels and the room for Nikon to actually make it. If they can somehow match Canon's speed too (in the area of 10fps), then we could see for the first time black lenses repopulating the sport areas.
Rumors on the web also mention the release of the long awaited VR telephoto lenses, which I believe is the primary reason why so many people went over to Canon in the past.
On my humble level, I am all geared up with Nikon but been contemplating for a long time moving over to the Canon side for that specific reason (big stabilized white lenses), and the way Canon bodies have been handling noise at high ISO.
Should they release a FF 12mp body able to deliver presentable ISO6400 shots (not to mention the sensitivities of 12800 and 25600 mentionned on the web) and a 500 4.0 VR...I would be more than happy to give away to Nikon another 12k$ or so :-)
This one could be called d3h, a d3x with FF sensor and about double number of pixels (24mp) being then planned for Q1-Q2 next year.

I don't know if anyone else posted this, but in the September Pop Photo there is a photo taken with a 14-28 mm f2.8 D. I thought it was a misprint. Maybe this one is real. I hope so.

Sounds like a reality then. Odd though, given how good the 17-35mm F2.8 lens is. I presume it will be an addition rather than a replacement.

They didn't ship until Dec. 15, 2005. I got one from the very first batch that B&H got (had to return it due to severe banding, re-ordered in Feb. 2006).

Sick of make up story. I do not care FF at all.

You should, I know noboby using Canon who went from a FF camera to a 1.6x cropped sensor (and recent polls in the C forum sdhow that people will not go from their 5D to a 40D). I know many who went the other way around (me included). I even personally know people who went from a D200 to a Canon 5D. And the only reason is IQ, even if everyboby (me included) thinks that the D200 is a better body than the current Canon bodies (40D excluded if specs hold true). I do not care if you believe me, but I really hope that Nikon will go FF, because competition is good for everybody, it drives the prices down and the quality up (see the 40D, clearly a response to the success of the D200). Along the same lines, I hope the recent rumors about Sony will become reality and Sony be soon a viable alternative to C and N.
Cheers and long life to Nikon.

Well, I for one hope Nikon never ever release a full frame camera. That way, Canon can own that niche market share and the prices will stay high. Its an exclusive club, and not everyone should be allowed to join.

By keeping the prices up due to lack of competition, it will remain an area not everyone will get into. Its like wanting everyone to have and drive a Ferrari (with big spot lights because it sees in the dark). Not everyone should be allowed to smoke a big fat Cuban cigar.

Nikon might never have to be #1. It can be much easier being #2 or #3 and nearly as profitable.
Apparently the bigger money is in the low and mid priced bodies and the lens accessories sales they generate so why race to get a high end product out ?

That said the new Canon 40D priced at $1299 USD clearly shows they can counter anything Nikon produces (D200) and do it for less. That is if the specs hold up in the reviews and if their new AF system is really improved as they claim it is.
I`d be tempted to switch back. It`s sounds like the best one yet for the money .

Well there's nothing wrong with flip flopping, good for the economy I say.

Probably 'bout time they caught the D200 though, they've only had 20 months to get over the 'shock and aw' and pull their heads out of their a$$es.

I for one are more than happy for people to flip flop. Means more cheap 2nd hand gear on the forums.

I counted 8- 30D and 20D on the F/S listings front page. It sure looks like it`s gonna be a big seller for Canon.
And the leapfroggin goes on. Nikon`s turn next.

Well, check out Thom Hogan's site.
He is stating fairly authoritatively that Nikon is
about to announce a new camera with a full frame
sensor and a high frame rate, and in the 10 or 12 mega
pixel range, with very excellent high ISO low noise
characteristics. ISO up to 12,000 or 25,000?

I agree with some of you that this is not the camera
I was hoping for. Full frame and sports/wildlife don't seem
to go together too well. But good image quality at
ISO 12,800 would certainly be something interesting.

Are we talking about the same site?

I've read nothing that says authoritatively Nikon is releasing a full frame sensor. Rather, Thoms quote is; "Unfortunately, if I'm right about which prototype is being introduced this week, the Canon/Nikon pro user debates will continue unfettered.

That's because Canon will up the 1DsII from 16mp to 21mp this week, and Nikon will be once again stuck facing the "fewer pixels" complaint from some users (because they're comparing the wrong camera with the wrong camera).

But if you go back and read my roadmap, the high resolution follow up camera from Nikon isn't expected until the middle of next year (and the about-to-be-announced high-speed pro camera is following at about the predicted interval, especially if it doesn't ship until later this fall). "

Don't know where these numbers of ISO 25,000 are coming from either. Nice... sure.

Tuannie I see that in spite of using Canon you still join us in the Nikon forums. There are some exciting Canon news on regard to their new cameras. I am a Nikon user and I do not feel like buying a camera with APS or "full frame" sensor boosting 21 megapixels. I am not ready yet for 100 megabytes files!
On regard to the new CMOS sensor by Sony it is always welcome news to see new technology. Seems as if the new Nikon cameras will not have the new sensor. Nikon manufactured a nice sensor, the LBCAST that they used with the D2H and D2Hs. It is the same sensor and instead it works better with the D2Hs. Why they do not keep working and developing sensors is beyond my understanding.
Anyway, seems as if you could be coming back in the future.
Best regards.

Nikon has used the Sony sensors in the past. Do you think the D3H will use this? That would put it on par or slightly better than the D1MkIII.

I think it's far more likely to show up in the D200 replacement.
