Hopefully the D3H will have at least 8MP's to stay only a little bit behind Canon. I can't possibly see the D3H exceeding Canon as that is just too big a jump for Nikon to make. Currently Canon has twice the MP's of Nikon and that is tough to argue against. If Nikon can get the D3H to 8 then the Canon advantage won't mean much with respect to that particular specification. Focus and ergonomics have also been improved on the new Canon and that closes a part of the gap that Nikon has had in usability.

Of course MP's are not the most important thing but right now, Canon's sports body has 2.5 times as many pixels. That doesn't sound good at all.

But of course if Nikon gives nothing but more real groovy D40's and coolpix cameras for the next two years .... this will be an even better announcement today. I will have one next year along with a 300 f 4.0 IS lens for the track instead of that 200-400.
I will never get rid of the two D2h bodies I have right now - they are too special and have opened up new worlds for me .... but all choice is good for all people to have.

Oh and Nikon ... can you please put VR on that F 4.0 300 soon ... please ... while I'm being patient?

Nikon has been pretty quiet on the pro level for over a year now so it's possible they have a gangbuster coming up.

The things that impressed me about the Mk3 are:

- 10fps, seriously amazing.
- 3" lcd screen
- anti dust

So what if people don't "NEED" those things? Most people don't need anything above say a D50. Provided they don't make the camera much more unreliable, those features are positive steps IMHO.

One aspect is the camera specs in itself but more important IMHO is showing the intention of beeing on the bleeding edge of camera development. It seems like Canon really shows how much they want to be number one, Nikon needs to counter otherwise they will fall behind eventually.

I expect an Nikon anouncement within the end of march and full delievery capacity within the end of june.

Ray

Life is never easy, . The good fight must go on. This is actually a good thing if we as consumers can read between the lines. Good old competition can have companys doing constructive things and sometimes destructive things. The race is on. If we want to win all we have to do is read between the lines. Let the masses buy up all the new expensive tools. You have to ask yourself as a photographer why do I do what I do? I fell in lust with photography not its new tools. I love watching the competition and having new tools on the horizon is great, but do we really need more. The masses do and both Cannon and Nikon compete for this market to continue capitalizing on what they do best. It is that very capital that continues the cycle of each years new products. I am a part time professional photographer. From my observation the masses don't even come close to really using a DSLR to its fullest potential. Here we all are having so much that we don't even fully use and yet we want more. My current cameras are still teaching me new things, Im glad my needs have already been met with the D2H and D2X. I just want some more DX lenses! These are the tools that really count

i kind of disagree. remember just prior to the D2X's announcement and then the D200's, people were going nuts predicting the demise of nikon but, once those products were announced and getting into peoples' hands, life was good again...until now

that'd be nice but not how it has worked in the past. nikon guru thom hogan expects the D3H to be announced no sooner than summer.

Why, is this a pissing match? Nikon is known for having a different development cycle than Canon. If you find it to be too slow, then Canon may be the brand for you.

am i the only person who noticed the amount of noise reduction on the bald eagle photo? There's less noise in that (and significantly softer) than the iso 400 photos. I told my friend that a lot of the processing power has to go towards incamera NR, and look who's right. Also, it appears they did some other processing on the images such as removing CA.

About the only reason will be public perception. If Nikon releases a D3H with the D200 sensor many people will think Nikon is just recycling old technology.

Also, many expect Nikon to stay with LBCAST as opposed to CCD. Obviously the best sensor is what is needed and I have to assume Nikon didn't invest in LBCAST for only one camera. Nikon has had some time now to get LBCAST to the next level, whatever that is, and I am anxious to see what they can do.

I have no need to move beyond my D200 with the exception of focussing. If a 10MP D3H is released for a reasonable sum of money, it may sway me to move. I loved my D2X with the exception of highlights that were easily lost. That is why I moved to a D200 and apart from focus and battery life, I can't say as I miss the D2X. Apart from cool factor of course.

the way lbcast was before, if they've been able to improve it it'll be amazing, and it may be time for me to get a d3h

I only base my opinion on the speculation that this camera might have an impact in the marketing situation regarding the PRO segment as well as dedicated "amateur" photographers. This segment represents a lot of money and even more when it comes to market value. Popular opinion is a dangerous thing and not always connected to reality. So forth i believe it is in Nikonīs interest to show off some muscle and i believe they will...they certainly has the skill/knowhow to do so.

As a side note, Apple has roughly about 5% market share which is a very good example showing that big market share does not equal better.

Maybe...what is a "pissing match"? Sorry, english is not my native language :-)

Thereīs no such thing as Nikonīs cycle beeing too slow for me and yes, Canon is certainly a camera brand for me...as is Nikon, or whatever else brand that helps me get a paycheck.

I just wanted to give cudos to Canon for presenting some great equipment and i think Nikon needs to counter it and i truly believe they will...pretty soon too!

Fabulous camera!
I think the reason why there is so much interest here is that this camera is actually geared towards the wants of a Nikon user, it could end up being a master stroke of Canon marketing.
I mean this camera has absolutley nothing the canon pro wants and everything in a camera we do.
Lets face it it is not "FULL FRAME" is it?
Cheers,
Jasin.
I think if I were on the fence this would be the kit that made me jump.

My largest regret about moving from the 1D to the D2h is the crop. 1.25 is what it really is - not the described 1.3 roundoff and as such is the perfect deal as far as I'm concerned because it give a bit of extra reach and yet makes many primes that I love still closer to the intent they have on FF. It's my idea of the perfect compromise. The 1.25 crop also has the benefit of making the 1D viewfinder subtley but noticeably better than the fine D2h viewfinder.

Short of having a high speed crop this thing is heaven for it's strengths.
A 1D mark3 with the 35 f 1.4, the 50 f 1.2 and the 85 f 1.2 would give me the perfect, I mean perfect portrait kit. the 85 on 1.5 (1.53 to be exact) gives and ok but longish 130 and I love that but on the Canon it would give me a 105 and along with the 1.2 extreme aperture is my dream portrait setup. Damm, the longer dwelve into all the fabulous details the longer I wonder .....

My favorite aspect is the new ability to fine tune the focus on the body lens combo. I hope now, more than any other feature that may come that we get parity on that one blessing.

I hope patience has it's rewards. I believe it will - but if I were doing weddings or fashion still .... I might not wait. I'm no longer a pro ... so this is all for fun ... but a pro should be brand agnostic ... and this is the current state of the art. And for an artizan persuit such as photography where it is tool in eaqual parts to vision - this is a hell of a grail!

I repeat ... I hope patience brings rewards. I'm feeling weak right now

i was fooling around in this thread earlier... but now i'm serious.. are you really weak now i just can't imagine that. When i look at my stacked shelves with nikon gear (and look at my empty bank account) 'the other side' really must make a fab dream camera. I simply can't afford this new body let alone all the glass i need to buy. Even if i had the funds, i bet Nikon will come up with a body and i'll regret the switch. Maybe i'm just to happy with the gear i have now.

And come one... this canon still has no heated grip to keep my fingers warm when i'm shooting polar bears... sheesh now i'm fooling around again

Any one dumping their gear right now would be a damn fool to do so with out waiting to see what the D3 presents for us.... you've made it this far with what you've got, you can surely last another few weeks to see what the D3 has to offer.... if when the D3 is announced, it still doesn't stack up, by all means switch over... after all, it'll likely be another year at least before we see a D3X (assuming they announce the D3H first) and it seems that pro bodies are being replaced on a three year cycle, so once both Canon and Nikon have their offerings on the table, then decide which you would rather use for the next three years...
