Jeff, I've been absolutely blasted for having the audacity to suggest that Canon has been underwhelmed by sales of the 5D. Not saying that it was making a loss, or anything like that, but they had a BIG push that everyone should be using / upgrading to "full-frame". Their figures weren't what they were expecting, nor were the figures in our store.

It would not surpirse me to hear that the 5D was discontinued. Or if the 5D continues that the 5Dn is only a marginal upgrade (think 20D/30D) here. They may just give it one more go with a BIG price drop and see what happens.

What that could mean is that the 1DS MKII may even suffer the same fate. Full frame cameras may change as suggested. The 1Ds MKII really is a studio camera, so.... Different body, different market.

Afterall, we all know that APS-H is the currently the biggest size sensor that can be produced in one pass. From Canons MKIII white paper The EOS-1D Mark III’s new, Canon-designed and manufactured, APS-H-size, CMOS single-plate sensor advances the state of the art in professional DSLR sensor design. APS-H is the largest sensor that can be imaged in one pass using cutting edge semiconductor manufacturing technology.

So why here. Because in a way it affects Nikon. Nikon would only bring out a FF sensor if the market demanded it. They have said that many times. So far, it the real world (not the hype, chit chat, forum world), FF has not been the be all and end all of the professional photographer, REGARDLESS of what the folks on the other side of the sand box are saying. The 1DMK III is testament to this.

It's ok, I'm think skinned ( and I have my flame suit ready! )

canon just has strong NR. That's it. It looks good considering it's incamera at high ISOs, but I think people are forgetting it's noise reduction, not an actual lack of noise. It almost reminds me of a properly exposed d2h file that's been interpolated

Yes and no. According to Canon's 1D3 white paper (page 10), the light-gathering ability has been fundamentally improved by optimizing the microlenses which focus light on the sensor. Thus, the sensor can now receive light more efficiently than before. As a bonus, the camera can focus in even lower light than previous models (EV -1 instead of EV 0)

Also, improvements to the on-chip noise removal circuitry have been made so yes, there is some NR going on. I'm not sure how much it differs from software based NR though.

Finally, ISO 3200 is now a standard setting, unlike previous models where it was ISO 1600 underexposed a stop and then pushed in-camera.

I think using words like "Amazing" is a bit over the top on that image. I mean...the image sucks for compostion. And for God's sake, it's a couple blonds in a living room....don't do nothing for me. Get a brunette or a red head, and actually compose an photo...instead of some cheesy snapshot. Geesh!

Clearly.

However, from a noise standpoint, the image is certainly noteworthy. That is ALL the image was intended to illustrate. It's quite obvious that the snapshot isn't going to win any sort of award. No one's going to argue with you there.

according to a recent article in a leading Swedish magazine (and Sweden is a market where Nikon one of it's highest market shares) http://kamerabild.mkf.se/ArticlePages/200702/22/20070222133807_ADF399/20070222133807_ADF399.dbp.asp

eh not to bug you guys again about this iso3200 noise thing, but i don't find it amazing at all. if i set my camera to 3200 and use a flash it looks the same... maybe even better, d@mn check the colored noise in the shadows. that's not at all amazing... c'mon this isn't a low light situation. these are very bright blondes hahaha and it's a cheasy snapshot like mentioned before. you won't need a 1D for this. my D40 will give the same result with the kitlens. ok it's only 6mp.. sorry... as if you'd like this printed on billboard size ....

In my op the ISO3200 shot looks pretty good. Chroma noise IS easier to reduce/remove than luminance noise... ever seen a D200 shot at ISO3200 with in-camera noise reduction on? Posterization city. Obviously this shot had no reason to be ISO3200... the whole point of ISO3200 is to capture more natural light in low light conditions or to stop fast motion in mediocre light... not to shoot with a flash in a small room! Lit shots at high ISO always look way better than natural light shots. Why you might ask? Because there aren't any real shadows to speak of. Noise lives in the shadows.

No matter how you look at it though, the noise characteristics of the 1D3 are in a league of their own. Call me Canon biased if you want, but it's just that apparent to me!

it sure looks good... but i can't make anything of this. i just can't judge how good or bad the noise characteristics are, based on this flash image... so it's definitelly not amazing. (imo)

check these. it's an amazing iso3200 shot from one of my camera's. but they proof nothing, since it's all nice light (tungsten)... give me a reall low light situation and i will have a big problem. but the canon will do a better job, but these samples are so pointless

As an occasional user of Nikon gear (and a long time Canon user) I've often thought that the menus and buttons on Nikon gear was far more intuitive. Now Canon have obviously learned.

For A Sports / PJ shooter the new 1D3 is a real dream -- I can't wait to see what sort of shots it produces at 3200 and 6400 ISO.

I also love the fact it's retained the 1.3X factor. For me personally I never liked the 1.6X format although YMMV.

I still feel Nikon made a mistake by not introducing a FF camera or at least something like the 1D3 with the 1.3X factor.

If Nikon doesn't want to see a forest of white Lenses at the Beijing Olympics it really needs to address the pro sports shooters needs.

I couldn't believe the goodies Canon came up with on the 1D3 --a total surprise and for once I WILL be an early upgrader.

Let's hope Nikonians have something to cheer about soon.

Cheers

-K

Why, did my Nikon start taking worse pictures due to Canon's announcement?

No of course not -- however it's great to have added facilities which make it possible to capture MORE shots in difficult light.

For some sports if the noise really is very low at iso 3200 and 6400 this will be a real winner. Particularly in sports like Rugby, Football (our kind --soccer) etc where you need to be able to freeze motion entirely and get a real perfect shot like the ball on top of a players head, or the ball leaving the players feet after he's up in the air having done an overhead banana kick.

New cameras certainly don't make you take worse pictures with your existing gear -- no it's being able to take more sellable / keepers in situations that are more or less impossible to do with existing equipment.

If you don't work in this type of area and don't need the extra stuff then of course you don't need to change.

As a working PJ I can most definitely say the 1D3 hits all the right buttons.

Cheers

Kyle, we appreciate the value of the low noise at high ISO's so I don't think anyone would actually disagree that having the added facility is a benefit. But there are so many posts in the past few days with people "feeling sorry" for people who shoot with Nikon because a new camera from someone has been released. The hysteria around the 1D MK III is bizaare.

On specs alone, it looks like it will be a very very good camera. I'll reserve judgement of course, when it actually hits the shelves. Will Nikon bring out a camera that is better than what they currently have, well, probably. Will Canon release a better camera than the 1D MK III. I would say it was a safe bet.

"If you don't work in this type of area and don't need the extra stuff then of course you don't need to change."

I'm sure the D3H will have many improvements over the D2H (including high ISO noise characterstics) and I'm sure many Nikon Pro's (and amateurs) will buy /change to the D3H when it comes out.

I agree. Lets hope Nikon bring out some goodies, like lots of AF-S VR lens!

You know what gents ... this camera, in my mind, is a body that does completely take the thunder and "raison d'etre" away from one company. Olympus. They robbed Olympus's playbook and took all. That E-3 that has been delayed now for two years doesn't really need to be developed since the whole Olympus pro market has dwindled down to something like 50 shooters on the whole planet. I think the adoption of live view (and canon did it better) and dust busting stuck a fork inside of the Olympus turkey. It's done.

And I speak as a sad early adopter

Link # 1 WOW....AMAZING WORK...especially considering the handicap he is working under.

Link # 2 You can talk all you want about marketing....but.....all the Canon owners I know bought theirs because they could not resist the rebates.

This sounds like a great camera. It gives Canon users new hope, though I doubt that some with a Rebel or 30D will upgrade.

Does the $ 4000.00 include the level of talent that it will take to take full advantage of this body? Contrary to popular belief this camera body won't make you a better photographer. What good is 10 fps if they're 10 bad frames?

You can't coach height.........and you can't buy talent.

rhyder, that is of course true as well as a VERY good point that should not be left out but i think we have to discuss in the context of how the camera performs, not the shooter?

I´m positive sure that Nikon will offer something just as good shortly but that does not mean one cannot drool for a minute over this marvel presented by Canon?! I could certainly use it shooting hocky tomorrow as i am "stuck" with 1600iso - 1/200sec.

TomRA: you could always over expose by a few stops and then bring it back to correct exposure in photoshop. that way the shutter speed will be faster.
