Firstly, may I say I'm a nikon shooter and my canon friend just sent this to me.

http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20070221_1dmark3.html

Apparently canon released their specs of new toys. I just thought this might interest a few of you because all of the speculation in the canon board and how it'll compare to the nikons

it looks like a really nice camera. hopefully, nikon will realize the shot leveled across their bow. As it stands right now, Canon's PJ camera is 10MP/10fps and Nikon's is 4MP/8fps. You can't argue those specs. Someone needs to pass Nikon a band-aid. Canon hit what many have predicted the D3H was going to be ahead of the D3H. At this point, the only way the D3H comes out on top is if it's FF. Even then, you'd likely lose those who are DX-centric and would miss the tele end. Looks like Nikon has concentrated a little too much on the consumer end and missed the very thing that makes them who they are. I hope they come out with their new pro camera--soon--for their own sake.

Chris
p.s. for those that don't know, I'm fully vested in the Nikon system and don't plan to change...right now. But, the new camera certainly looks like what I've been dying for Nikon to make.

The new 1D does look sweet. Curious what Nikon will come out with. I'm sure we'll all be happily surprised

It looks like a beast! I am interested to see how the live view LCD goes over. There are so many that want it in a DSLR, but it is usually those new to SLR and not the ones using 1D series cameras.

The D200 was a quantum leap, just like this 1D mkIII...... hopefully the D3h will leapfrog the 1D mkIII and introduce even more revolutionary features...

This camera does have some incredible upgrades, and I'm not talking about 10MP or 10fps.

I find the focus fine tuning feature a cheap (cheesy) solution to a rather common problem with Canon gear.

Instead of reducing the amount of "slop" in their lenses and camera, they are leaving it to the owner to compensate for front/back focus issues. It reminds me of carburetor mixture adjustment levers that were mounted on the steering columns of early cars.

Thats not progress, its a cop-out method for addressing poor manufacturing tolerances. As some engineers like to say when covering up mistakes; "Thats not a flaw, it's a feature."

GPS via the wireless adapter. Why not interface directly through the camera like Nikon?

49 focus points. I'm still having trouble finding a viable rational for that many focus points other than it's just a numbers game.

Otherwise it seems like a nice camera!

Oh please! Someone is always complaining about something.

Canon listen after all. I really hated the double pressing of buttons to change settings when I was with Canon, now you press ISO, Drive mode and etc.. to change whatever you want. Batteries were heavy, now its like Nikon.

I predict that their next generation will exactly like Nikon in terms of ergonomics, this is great news. Ergonomic is ridiculous with 1D series. I mean most users have problem with Canon ergonomic than anything else right? I guess they are looking at Nikon and honing their current/future cams.

I do feel this cam is a bit overboard, geez...what will they come up with next.

Talk about complaining!

Hey, if you don't complain, you won't have progress - Even if it's done in a cheesy way.

i dont think FF would change many PJ people's minds. IMHO Nikon needs to release something like the mark IIn so we at least get more megapixels AND fps.

Man...that's a nice rig. I if they were to ever change ergos anywhere near Nikon I'd have to jump ship.

I use a 1Ds MkII at the studio I work for and I hate the way it feels, but the image quality is superb. Oh well, that's life right?

Amazing...

10fps hmm right. sometimes i shoot @8fps... but how often. do we really need 2 frames more in a second? why don't we start filming? i heard sony has a new sensor able to capture 60fps in high res. i had a dv camera once i hated it... but now the dslrs seem to capture almost at the same rate... nice...

where's my pinhole?

Yeah, I too got an email from my canon buds. Really, 10mpx files, on a sports-oriented camera, kinda overkill, but dual digicIII... that's like dual core2 duo procesors washing out all the noise at them there iso 6400 shots

I'm sure the D3h will be nice...

Apart from ergonomics, which is still Nikon's domain, at least in my view, this camera has everything the D2Hs has and everything a D200 has and then quite a bit more. It probably competes rather well with the D2Xs as well.

I can easily see this camera as the deciding factor for many photographers to change to Canon if Nikon doesn't come up with a vastly improved D3H or X within a few months. The 1DIII is as much camera as most photographers, most pro's included, will ever need.

Yeah, it is really an amazing camera. It does a lot more than 10 MP, 10 fps.

ISO 50-6400
Live View to check out composition, exposure, and focus on the LCD in real-time
Live View also works when shooting tethered or wirelessly
14-bit images for better color transitions
More high-precision AF points, including the edge AF points
3 inch LCD
50% less shadow noise in all images
Better high ISO performance
Better low light focusing (EV -1)
300,000 cycle shutter life
Special mode to protect against blown highlights
Silent mode
sRAW, 2.5 megapixel RAW images
Ability to write images directly to USB thumb drive or hard drive
Ability to transmit images wirelessly over wifi
GPS
Brighter viewfinder
Dust removal, automatically both in-camera and in-software
Lighter weight and lighter/smaller batteries with ~2x the capacity
The body was completely redesigned and ergonomically improved, but still in line with EOS bodies.

and lots of little things like:
Improved button layout
More info in the LCD panels
Switches marked better
Brighter viewfinder and better focusing screen
Eyecup more difficult to accidentally knock off

There are some dramatic changes and it's only a matter of time before these improvements are added to the 1Ds3.

Dude.... realistically this camera slaughters the D2X(s)... 10Mp/10fps....nikon HAS to respond to this or join the ranks of Olympus and Pentax as NONCOMPETITORS.... Yes Nikon glass is awesome, and the ergos are amazing.... when it comes to every day working photogs those are apparetly NOT key issues.... Mp's and FPS are.... Lets hope the D3h is a competitor, and not already outdated the day it is released....

i heard the same things said when the D2h was released or the first 1D... trust me this race isn't over yet. within 2 years all soccer moms shoot with this whale and we really need more advanced technology...

another point: why is this in the Nikon forum?

I think what is more interesting is that the new 580EX II flash has "Dust- and water- resistance to match the EOS-1D Mark III". Here.

The whole rig is clearly aimed at sports shooters and paparazzi types.
