A 22mp FF sensor would be about the same pixel density as the 20D and 30D. Why would the new sensor require lenses with better resolution?

While I don't think a new lens mount is needed, just suppose that achieving sufficient resolution at the edge of the full frame required increasing the diameter of the image circle. That in turn could require a mount/geometry change. So while I don't think a change from the EF mount is likely at this point, it's not totally illogical.

Nope. That one was proven to be bogus, a fake.

No it wasn't. It existed on the Canon site, then shortly after being discovered, was changed to point to the 400D page. It's not a "fake."

We’ve hit the 100 page mark… And I started to think – has this thread, have we lost our way

Then the parallels to the TV series “Lost” (and its ink) became clearer to me:
>>A complex plot full of tantalising hints that never actually goes anywhere
>>Lots of side discussion and character development
>>Hints, promises that a deeper meaning will be revealed
>>Very little of substance actually happens

And like “Lost” audience enthusiasm has waned. We started out as a must visit thread, however this gradually has dropped with less and less “audience” (FM posters) as time goes by… We still have the regular addicts, who just have to keep coming back… But many have realised, whether you check every page or skip many, it means little – yes you may have missed many minor plot twists, hints and possibilities, but ultimately with so little real development and information – it is easy to catch up with anything that is meaningful…

Ultimately, I realise that with threads such as these, like Seinfield – its all about the journey, the little events on the way… Nothing big will happen until the end is in sight, and even then not all will be revealed…. There is always September 20078 and 2008 and the next PMA, and then Equally, whatever the ending this time (as with so many TV series) we can be sure that many of us will not be happy – too much left unsaid, unresolved….

But, as with "Lost", for many this thread will remain entertaining - a guilty pleasure - to be followed through to the end... Enjoyable for the journey as much as the destination... I know I am in that category

My 1.6 crop 20D already exploits the sweetspot of my EF lenses so I guess I won't be needing to upgrade to 22MP for the same resolution.

I just saved over $8000 ... cool.

Yup -- It was real. Saw it for myself before Canon "fixed" it, and it was definitely a directory on the Canon HK site, not some faked site made to look like a Canon site..

Know something. I've noticed that I've basically stopped reading the newpaper comics. When I stop to consider why, I'm thinking that this thread (and similiar entertaining ones at various times) is satisfying my humor quota.

I'm just getting a real kick out of hanging around here.

I agree with Erik... I examined the link when it was up and the link was to a directory on the Canon HK web site with the relant hyperlinks were also to other directories on that site. Since then Canon has remapped the contents of the 2 pages (English and Chines) page to duplicate copies of the 400D page... Looks like a cover up to me... Unless Canon happened to mistype 40D on both pages...

Oh - and I know there are also posts which have looked at copies of the linked page retained on another web site and thought they were false becuase in those copies a number of the hyperlinks had been changed to point to a private web site. However I believe this was done by the person taking the copy... The orgianal links were to other locations on the Canon HK web site's directory etc.

What specs do you guys think the successor to the 40D will have?

Easy - emerging "consensus" is:
>> New 4 channel sensor with 10.x MP (different from 400D)
>> Still 1.6 crop
>> Antidust (as per the 400D)
>> Improved Viewfinder
>> 1 stop improvement in high ISO (3200 similar to current 1600)
>> Improved Autofocus (most likely the 5Ds 6 extra invisble AF points)
>> DIGIC III image processing - but with SLR level NR not the agressive P&S style in the initial DIGIC III release
>> 5 FPS
>> Probably slightly ligher (1 1/2 ounces or 35g)
>> Better rear LCD (may be 3 inch, but clearer / brighter)
>> Some are expecting / hoping for improved weather sealing (like the Pentax K10D and Nikon D200)
>> Minor interface tweaks. E.g programable direct print button and one or two new buttons to provide direct access to frequently used menu options
>> Still CF memory

And we're exactly 5 weeks away from the expected day of announcements

(Assuming that Canon lifts the cover 3 days before PMA)
Everyone hanging in tight? Good

Let alone a new mount

Still some super resolution L series (zooms with the resolution of the 135 F2L etc.) could be a great merketing oportunity for the well heeled who would 'need them'...

I think in a similar way, why a new mount? I put an explanation what I believe in another site:

"Still I have not clear the rumor about Canon has to make a new EF mount and lenses to resolve properly for the "new" 22 Mp cameras. May be we are mixing rumors and things. I can not imagine that going from 16 Mp to 22 Mp over a 24x36 mm sensor has to imply the redesign of the mount and create new lenses, specially when lenses are "analog" or discrete devices. A good glass should be enough to get good images, mainly if before where used over film, that many times are compared and said that still has "more definition" than digital ones, specially with larger print outs !!

I think the new mount and redesign of the EF mount it would have more sense if we are speaking about a new MF format camera, then is more clear."

Nice summary on the 40D Geoff. Well, at least thats exactly what I think will happen. But Python, we just might not get it straight away.

We don't need a new Canon mount (bigger) to improve the final resolution... In reality we need a sensor with an infinite resolution to made the lense THE limitative element of the optical system !!! So all improvements in sensor domain will already bring his benefits with the actual EF lenses

Another rumour I've come across on another forum:

"5th assistant to Annie Leibovitz had this to say on the L-L forums on Friday:

"She has been shooting all her editorial work with Canon 1Ds MII bodies. These have been major jobs for Vanity Fair and various other mags and recently went on a major Ad job that will be worldwide.

"The TomKat cover was all Canon and the last two or three editorials were all Canon.

"The last shoot had a Canon rep come by with the new 22MP digi demo body. It is half the size of the 1Ds Mark II. They said they are hustling to make lenses that will work with what this body can resolve. They may even make a new mount again for an entirely new lens design. It won't be out before Phot Show East."

So there you have it, the latest uber-kam rumor, from the horse's mouth to the next horse to the next horse and then on to your ear. "Phot Show East" refers to the PhotoPlus Expo 2007, slated to be held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan on October 18–20, 2007. "The TomKat cover" refers to the recent, um, Leibovitz "homage" to Linda McCartney on the cover of Vanity Fair. "
