Are you all that unhappy with your current gear that so much is demanded/wanted from Canon? Do you all have that disposable income to replace a perfectly fine lens with a new one that is only slightly different? Or upgrade a 1D series to a new one? I mean daydreaming is one thing, but owning $20,000 worth of equipment or more is absurd. Just curious...
That's OK srtid3r. The 40D is rumoured to come with a sense of humour button.

I was just pondering for S&G's , an upgradable body. A new chip comes out you can have it sent in to installed. Hell you invest 8000 into a body might as well be able to upgrade your investment to last longer. Just my though out of boredom.
I was intrigued by the picture of the Sinar M, more modular than a simple body / lens duo or even Leica with their digital back: it has four pieces.

The lenses are corrected to become flat, so designing lenses to project a curved image shgouldn't be that hard.
Like I said, I was told this 2 years ago by somneone close to canon. I could care less.
Ok ok, there is some truth into this. But designing each lens to have exactly the same curved focal plane is a different thing from the fact that spherically grounded and polished lens elements have not a completely flat focal plane. And there's still all the rest of the complete camera system that would have to be adapted to The Curve...

Also, optical and mechanical aspects of focusing would be severely constrained because the identical curvature would have to be maintained throughout the focus range. It would complicate the autofocus sensor system too.

In addition, the pentaprism would need to be replaced and a whole other system installed in its place to deal with all this non-planar-focused light.
Essentially, it would literally be easier to warp time and space than to do all this light-bending necessary to accommodate a curved sensor for a "problem" we can't even agree is a problem to begin with.
- Upgraded 5D (I am itching to upgrade from my 20D - current 5D seems very nice but one can always wish for something even better!). Chant with me 3D, 3D, 3D....
- The various 1 Series rumors/wishes, my personal favorite is the square sensor thread
In the past were anouncements typically made prior to PMA?
There are statistics of the several year's of pre-PMA announcements dates on the very first pages of this thread - IIRC. This time, I have not read all the pages.
What would not get me to upgrade from my 20D (sadly the likeliest alternative):
40D = 30D + 10 MP + sensor cleaning + 5D AF
What would get me to upgrade:
40D = 30D + 10 MP + f/8 AF (ideally 20-25 pt subset of 1-series 45 pt AF)
What would get me to upgrade immediately after changing my shorts:
3D = 5D + 16MP + f/8 AF (ideally 20-25 pt subset of 1-series 45 pt AF)
However, this would only be (dimly) possible if the 1DSIII came out first at 20+ MP.
I, like a lot of addicts on this forum, have many $K in lenses so I don't really care if the next body is $1K or $3K, but better AF is a must.
If it has ECF I'll buy one. But more MP, auto CMOS shaking and facial recognition I don't need or care about. Well, twice as much dynamic range might be tempting but I think they need a few more years on that one.
