Are you sure you don't mean, 'perifocal'?

Parfocal means everything past a certain distance is in focus. Perifocal means the focus changes with focal length, like on the Sigma 120-300 2.8

In hopes of someone saving me the agony of scanning the 65 pages of this discussion..... can someone recap the serious, reasonable rumors of what Canon may announce as new products?

Well we are up to 69 pages now - but I'll try

Well the most honest and short answer to this is “We know nothing

Even an optimist would say that “We know very little and can’t agree on that

For example we have at least 3 very different views about what will happen this year, all based on varying degrees of “inside information”. For example (from memory):

Lordcarl believes that 2007 will be the year of the FF for Canon and there will be no 30D replacement until 2008. PMA will see a replacement 1 series and possibly September 2007 will see a replacement 5D. This is based on a combination of some information from his pro dealer and instinct.

NikT has been told by the Canon rep to the large store he works at (in Australia) that that there will be no change to the Canon DSLR line-up for the first half of 2007. He’s not sure whether to believe this.

I believe (based on a fried of a friend!) that Canon will release a new 1 series and the 30D replacement (40D?) by March with a 5D replacement later in the year (August / September) with Canon seriously considering splitting the 5D range into two (low end and high end presume FF).

Three completely contradictory perspectives from “inside information”!

Then there are all sorts of wishes ranging from the 40D must be a 1.3 crop, to the 40D must be FF etc. Equally we have the 1 series combined into 1 model (with dynamic cropping like the Nikon) or retained as two models (depends who is wishing).

As for lenses there is no end of wishes and rumours from the 10-24 F2.8 IS through to the 600mm (or so) DO IS and everything in between…

Then (more left field) we have new medium format sensors, cameras and lenses… As well as Foveon type sensors etc…

The only thing that is definite is that for a few hours earlier this week the canon.com.hk site had two web pages (Chinese and English) which were placeholders for a DSLR called the 40D. And there is some doubt about how to interpret this, with a few claiming that this was a mistake and the pages were intended to be updates on the 400D.

There is so little information that other forums are quoting this one and we are quoting them (something which has it’s own humour about it!)

Ah well… Time will tell… All this in one week… Let’s hope we get something significant before we hit 200 pages!

Mine is strictly instinct and from hints given to me by my pro dealer rather than any "inside information". Anyway, if there is no new 1-series to be unveiled in the upcoming PMA Show 2007, I will need to look for a spare 1D MK II N elsewhere or online since I am no longer able to buy it new in my country ... not many are selling used MK II Ns either from where I am from.

The so-called EOS 40D is definitely a fake ... made by a HK EOS user to mimic a genuine Canon HK site - because most of the links in that page go to other non-Canon sites as opposed to within the HK site. Those 3rd-party sites also seem to have some connection with the person who made the fake 40D. Only 1 or 2 links did lead to genuine Canon HK site's sections.

Wow, this thread has really slowed down. Losing steam after 65 pages? That didn't happen for Photokina...

More leaks then I actually have no knowledge on that.

10fps on a 3 round burst, it works for the M-16, why not a camera. Yes I know, guns/camera, not the same thing...

Good catch btw.

Also, there is no real way to sum up the rumors thread, as there really is nothing but hot keyboard-strokes here.

No that's hyperfocal distance. Parfocal is as described above by Stan.

Never heard of perifocal.

I am sure some of us here may already know what new products Canon is going to announce for PMA 2007 but NDA obligations prevented them to reveal the actual model designations and specifications here. The most these members could do is giving out certain hints or spice-up the specs a bit to prevent it from being too accurate for Canon to be suspicious of someone actually leaking anything at this moment.

Personally-speaking, I prefer to hear about confirmations being made officially a few days prior to any trade show rather than having anyone or even the manufacturers themselves being forced to reveal the models prematurely due to leakages elsewhere.

Any early leakage defeats the purpose of having a grand announcement in conjunction with an upcoming photo trade show. The fact that both the Canon EOS 400D and Nikon D80 were officially announced some 6-8 weeks before Photokina 2006 sort of made the bi-annual show less interesting to look forward to especially since there were no other Canons and Nikons left to be announced in conjunction with it.

But I guess the fun/excitement lies in trying to outdo one another here as to who has the most accurate prediction as to what is in store despite not knowing anything or nothing pertaining to the new products' specifications!!!

Parfocal means the focus will not change while the lens focal length is changed.

Whatever is released I say it out loud: The 30D replacement will be 1.6x sensor. Any thoughts of 1.3x or FF especially are ridiculous, IMO of course.

However, I would love nothing more than for Canon to release a 1.3x sensor in a 5D sized body as the DSLR version of the EOS 3. But it's got 0 chance of being in the 30D replacement

I'm with you Whayne.

I was doing some more 'tea leaf reading' today and saw that the new range, that will come in the second half of the year, will have new file security features implemented . The print button will stay, sort of. To access direct print , you have to press and hold another button first and then "direct print". Direct print by itself will become 'user definable'. Thats right, you FUNC lovers.

I'll release more details as I go.

I really don't like to spread rumors but this is what I was told by a reliable source:

30D successor will be full frame 12MP (makes sense to have a low end full frame camera)

5D successor will have 17MP FF chip (this is also a logical step)

1Ds Mk2 replacement will be 22MP

All at PMA this year. It seems to be all the right moves to put Canon a few years ahead of Nikon once again. A FF low end camera in the $1500 range would really shake the market up in a good way. And bringing the 5D up to 17MP would put it exactly where the original 5D was compared with a 22MP pro camera. That would also keep those price points exactly where they are now.

Please understand that I am passing on information from a reliable source, but who knows if his source really knows. Actually I was given this info before Photokina, when I was really hoping for Canon's 1Ds upgrade, so I didn't want to believe I would have to wait this long.

Whatever they release will, I am sure, be great upgrades to already great cameras.

Steve

Whatever they do ... I just hope they DO NOT squeeze 12 mpixel from APS-C. But that's wishful thinking on my part, since I like to shoot available light.

Any word from that source on the 1DIIN developments? Will that become a 12 Mpixel 1.3x crop 8 fps machinegun that's sorta expected?

Good work Steve. An actual rumor.

It seems that a lot of tele shooters would look at Nikon if the 40D became full frame.

Yep, lucky Nikons sitting still with their development.

I can't wait till we get to the level of the medium format backs currently out. 39 megapixels, 16 bit TIFF files. 239 MB each. This in a new improved 1D Mark V, 10 fps.

2390 MBs per second. Ha. Don't worry about the cameras. We should all be investing in hard drive manufacturers!!

You'll never need another zoom lens again. We'll use our 50mm F1.2s and just bloody crop.

I just don't believe the 40D will be FF - I mean, REALLY don't believe it. Unless Canon have been BS'ing about the cost of FF, or the 40D will be priced much higher, which means it isn't the successor to the 30D...

I'd accept that there's a new low end 5D with 12mp, though.

I think it's just 4 that has the bad connotation because one of its pronounciations in Japanese is si (pronounced like "she") which sounds the same as the word for death. The common words for 40 and 400 are yonju and yonhyaku so there wouldn't be an issue. The pronounciation which sounds like death is only used for 4, not 40, 400, 104, or whatever.

As I recall, the Nikon f4 was a Japanese camera......

Actually the camera many are overlooking is the Fuji S5 pro. Fuji's always had a good sensor that had noise as low if not lower than the Canon's and the S3 Pro is the current DR king. But the bodies have been pathetic. Well finally they stuck the new sensor in a D200 body. If Fuji really has improved on the S3 sensor then this will be a killer combo.

The rumour that has made the most sense to me is to see the 5D replacement split into two models. One essentially a 5D minus a feature or two and called the 7D for around $2K and the other a near 17MP version, with 5fps, sealing broader AF coverage etc and costing around $3K. This might be what Steve's source was relating. However, this will not be a 30D replacement. That makes no market sense. Canon would be closing off it's second biggest selling line.
