From the 2006 year end financial report of Canon...

"Within the camera segment, strong demand for digital SLR cameras has fueled continued growth with particularly strong sales for the advanced-amateur-model EOS 30D, launched in the first half of 2006, and the EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi, launched in the second half. This, in turn, led to expanded sales of interchangeable lenses for SLR cameras."

I saw no mention of the high end pro DSLR market in that report.. I wonder just how big a impact the high end has on the bottom dollar (yen) of Canon over all... I suppose they use the high end as a sort of marketing/promotion for their lower end DSLR and/or lens market... but I also wonder... If Canon really is all that happy with their 2006 30D sales, do they really have a replacement in the wings, and/or would they try to squeak out even more profits from the aging(in many peoples minds) 30D?

I believe AF also works off of a mirror behind the main mirror... if/when the mirror is locked up, don't you also loose the ability to focus? In astrophotography, this is probably a non-issue, since you presumably are focusing at a fixed distance and do not need to change focus... For normal photography, surely you need the ability to adjust focus...

I can see that working during long exposures like astrophotography. I don't know how it works specifically but it sounds like a live preview of the actual exposure being taken. You hit the shutter release and the mirror flips and the 1st curtain opens. But what about during framing of the shot during normal daylight? If the shutter and 1st curtain are open already how do you set exposure? What happens when you hit the shutter? Does the 1st curtain close and then reopen followed by the 2nd curtain? What happens if you want to take a burst of 5

It certainly bends the borders of credulity, that's for sure...but it's fun to think about.

Friendly enough... That is my comments were very likely just as friendly as I took your original comment to be. Then if you take FZ's brand of humor into account... Yeah, my comments are most definitely to be taken as friendly.

I think the rumor is a 16-50 f/2.8 IS.

I predict 400 pages by 12:30am tonite/tomorrow PST

yup, at least that; filled with more "announcements" from the same feckless prognosticators.

Think I'd rather have a good 16-24L rather than 16-35. 24 and up is pretty well covered with the 24-70.

Prognosticating in the same sentence as criticizing prognosticators. Quite a verbal feat.

The solution will be more elegant than that. I'm confident it will have an optical TTL viewfinder, beyond that I have no idea. The SLR part doesn't matter. The TTL does.

I would suspect that the live view would normally be off, but by pressing a button, the mirror would flip up and allow live viewing on the rear LCD.

I wonder if this feature would be applied in conjunction with what I had heard about a year ago - that Canon was working on a way of operating a sensor with only 1 of 4 pixels activated. Such a mode would give ample resolution for a 3 inch LCD screen, but would keep heat and power consumption down to a minimum while using live preview.

Live view would be useful for those "hold the camera over the head and pray" kind of shots.

Still nothing much said about weather sealing. I wonder why Canon is avoiding this as a feature.

I've seen these specs. for the last few days and don't believe the DIGIC II processor. I believe it has to be DIGIC III! The other specs. seem very believable.

Hope we get a 1 series, too. Or something even better? Dare to dream. I still believe Canon has something phenomenal coming, which could explain the extremely strict control over leaks. Maybe not at PMA, but this year anyway.

Wow, a magnesium XTi with 5 fps and spot metering. How thrilling. That would make the 5D look more exciting anyway.

Digic II? still? hmpf ... how uninspiring ... and still behind the D200. Thats the smallest possible 'upgrade' ... disapointing.

Based on what "we" need:

"sport" body 1D3
Faster, lighter&smaller, better ISO handling and better ergonomy (buttons ! f.ex. MLU )
- crop 1.3 ; 12MP
- ISO 6400
- 10fps
- Digic III
- X-sync 1/500
- Various Grips (batterypack, WiFi)
- Enviromental sealed of course and dust vibration&software(mapping)

"little brother" 40D (like 20d versus 1DmkII)
-no weather sealed version of 1D3 with crop 1.6
-6fps
-ISO 6400 (H)

lens with IS
- 400 f/5.6 L IS
- 200 f/1.8 L IS

lens that really is wide and sharp from edge to edge.
- 20 f/1.2 L
- 10-24 f/2.8 L

Later in May 2007 we will see 1Ds3 .... with something BeautiFull !
