I knew Danish people learn Dutch very easily, but now I understand. Even with 0 knowledge of Danish, I can read almost the complete article. Amazing and really cool.

Time seems to go extra slowly while waiting....

Indeed. It's about time for Canon to pop out that new FF 1D/5D hybrid.

40D rumors. From what I've read so far is that the 40D will be a faster version of the 400D in a compact alloy body(NOT TO COMPACT). Hope it's bigger than the XTI. I've read some rumored specs but none address if the read outs on the camera will be the white screen like the 400D.

Not really a rumor.. and maybe old news (from Feb 13th), but it seems Canon HK has lowered the price on some Canon lenses... The Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS, dropped 15% and is now down to around $930 US.

I've got a question or two... and forgive me for my ignorance on this...

Does Canon offer auto ISO in any of it's current DSLR cameras?

(assuming the answer is no)

Why not? and/or would they be likely to add this anytime soon?

http://www.pressefotografforbundet.dk/teknik/index.php?id=3516&action=info

nothing really new there - exept that they proceeded to checkout the price of the alleged 100-400/4L IS (on the belgium site previously mentioned) - which ends up being 7499 € instead of 2499 €. They also warned about ordering from that shop as they only accept payments through money transfers - which seems slightly dodgy in a european e-tailer.

OK, here are my predictions for (hopefully) tomorrow.

Canon will announce the 40D but it won’t be that big a deal. Up to 10mp and anti-dust will be the major items. No new stellar features to speak of though they will try to make a big deal out of the few little things that they will add. Will stay at 5 FPS w/ no weathersealing and be priced below the D200.

The 1DmkII will be replaced with a 1V sized body. A professional quality grip will be available. Camera will have a 1.3X 12mp sensor and be 8 FPS. ISO will be improved by one stop. AF will also be improved with more cross sensors and an improved algorithm.
DR will be improved by a notch and an HDR bracketing function will be available. MLU will be addressed. New flash triggering system will be introduced. Canon will not fix the door on the CF compartment on any of their cameras just to irritate Phil. If he is focused on the little things Canon is hoping that he misses the bigger problem areas in his reviews. Price will be in the $3K range and effectively kill off Nikon in the upper end market.

1DsMkIII and 5D MkII could be part of the PMA announcement but I expect them later in the year. Price on the 5D will start dropping to straddle the D200 more effectively.

Canon will release a 400mm 5.6 IS and will continue to add IS to more and more of their lenses to combat in-body IS cameras. This is a given as their argument that lens based IS is better is only valid if their lenses have IS. Also expect to see a new wide L in the 20mm range. The 100-400 F4 IS at $2500 is not believable but would be nice.

A new flash system will be introduced to compete with the far superior Nikon system.

Don't have those figures in front of me, but if any Canon DSLR's have auto ISO it would only be at the introductory level (and even there, I doubt it). Auto ISO is pretty much what defines the point-and-shootiness of a camera. If users can't be bothered to set this most basic setting, they need a P&S. Not trying to be a snob.

Canon does have basic auto ISO in a way with the Green / Auto mode on tthe 400D / 30D and 5D which will vary the ISO from 100 to 400. However this is a P&S equivalent mode....

This is a controveral topic, but what many Canon users (including pros) have been asking for is a programable Auto ISO model (such as the one Nikon has in the D80) which will automatically adjust the ISO up or down within user set limits when the shutter speed or apature would otherwise fall outside agreed limited (e.g. if Shutter speed would go bellow 1/60th then increase ISO up to a maximum of 1600 in normal steps (100, 200, 400 etc). This can be turned off (ie no loss to those that don't want it) but can be very handy to save shots... So I (for one) would like it and I am expecting that Canon will add it soon (pobably starting in their lower end DSLRs as this is a consumer popular feature.... Equally I acknowledge that there have been several (sometimes heated) threads on this and other forums and there are some who (for example always use M mode) and would die before engaging Auto ISO... (or Av or T or P etc) And that's fine too

If the 40D is 10mp, weather sealed, Digic III, and anti dust I will be thrilled.. If there is no weather sealing and Digic II, I think Canon has dropped the ball big time...

I'm not going to switch systems or cry about it, but I will not upgrade. I am looking to move up to the xxD series, but can certainly live my 350D for another year if I have to..

I can see the usefulness of that kind of feature. But I can also see the future thread (in DPR) with the question: "When will Canon introduce a pro model with auto ISO" (akin to the "When will Canon introduce a pro model 1.6 crop camera") <>

I beg to differ.. Unless you are using M, then either T or Av modes are point-and-shooting by your standards..

I want an Av+ (auto iso) mode:
aperture (user setting, depth of field/sharpness of the lens)
speed (auto based on lens characteristics (length, presence of IS) )
ISO based on AE.

I want an M+ (auto iso) mode:
aperture (user setting, depth of field/sharpness of the lens)
speed (user setting, based on subject motion)
ISO based on AE.

This is the way I use my camera, just wish there was a mode to help out
calculations.. BTW I think Av mode looked amateurish when it was introduced to "M" users.

This is what I know from a friend from Canon.
1D MkIII 10mp, 10fps, 3" LIVE LCD, the 40D 10MP, 5fps, 3"LCD. the 1ds MkII replacement in the fall with 22 MP and the 5D next year.
A new 16 - 35 mm F2.8 lens is coming to take care of the new 22 MP camera.

Yes... this type of programable auto ISO is more specific to what I was wondering about. I did not know if this is/was something that Canon had any good reasons for not including in a DSLR, etc...

When I first heard about this type of Auto ISO, I didn't feel there was much use for it... but the more I think about it, it seems it really would be a handy feature to have... Another thing I think would be interesting... is use varying ISO to do ISO bracketing...

I hope the 40D will be a bigger upgrade then the 20D->30D. Bigger as in, 6fps (though thats not really important), 11(10.5) mpg, weather sealed or somehting similar to it, and a better AF. If it would "still" have 5fps, then hopefully a higher "keeper" rate if you hold the shutter down.

Sam,

This may be it. Live LCD with an optional add-on for video capture. The timing mentioned may not be desirable, but is consistent with rumors. There may be considerably more interesting features in the new 1D than anticipated.
The 40D specs make sense.
