Guy,

Sent you an e-mail. I don't have an M8 yet, so don't get your hopes up before you open the e-mail.

Where in the U S are you guys (and Cindy; hello there) buying your M8 and lenses? Not that I am moving in that direction (yet) but would like to know.

I have been following the posts/threads on the M8, of course, and although there's hiccups, some of the images look very good.

There have been many requests to see comparo images (especially 5D and M8) but in my experience subtle differences are REALLY hard to see on small web images (others have said this already, I know) and especially the case where different Raw developers are being used. Some Raw engines seem to suit some sensors better; again, as others have said. so, in a sense, this seems futile.

The real differences will be in handling and ergonomics. How many M8 users here have that little side grip fitted (that would seem to be a very useful addition)? And now that people have been using their M8s for a while, what are the most-used lenses? This Q. is sparked by the poster above who commented that Canon has dropped the ball in the wide angle department; that's for sure. That was what started the Alt DSLR thread in the first place, after all.

And is there a list of 'things I want to see fixed in the M8 mk II', controls- and ergonomics-wise? I recall some additional button presses (?) for exp. compensation, for example.

Good luck Guy!!!

Cheers, KL

I think the exposure comp thing got forgotten once people actually started using the camera. I also see very few complaints about changing ISO settings.

In regards to getting the M8, you get them where you can find them. I have a chance to get one from the company that sold me my DMR, but they are not sure if they are getting one next week or not.

This company had a few on order and asked the number one in line if they would mind if I got it. He didn't seem to mind. I think you will find a lot of this happening. People are a little reluctant to commit to their orders until they like what they are hearing from Leica. In other words, call around, you might be surprised the amount of shops that have a M8 available later next week.

My CV15 just arrived. At least, I think so... maybe they sent me a scale-model though. It is so tiny I can hardly believe it. I can't wait to try it on my M8, when it comes back from Solms. Here are two pictures, one in my hand, and one next to the lens it is replacing. The whole lens, finder, adapter, packaging and box it came in weigh less than the 17-40L.

Btw, the 15mm finder is lying behind my 5D. I think I actually prefer the silver version of this particular lens. I am not sure why. Maybe because the design looks so retro, whereas the 50 Lux Asph. looks modern.

By weight I think the 17-40 is a better deal

What adapters are people usisng on the V15?

does it matter what one? since you dont use the finder anyway I guiess any adapter works (I assume adapters are made to bring up certain frameline pairs

I've always used my V15 without an adapter. It was dedicated to a Bessa L body. The sad thing about digital is that having a separate body just for a lens like this is now a hell of a lot more expensive. Even with a body attached, it was smaller and lighter than most 15mm SLR lenses alone (not to mention alot cheaper).

Victor, my adapter came with the lens when I bought it. I thought it was just a cheapie or a Voigtländer adapter, but now when I look at it, it says on it, at the top: "M2 21-35 M3 135" with a red dot above the M2, and then "Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Germany DBP". Below the text at the bottom there is a huge cutout which runs the length of the text. There is a little round cutout in the middle of the above text, which almost, but not quite, lines up with the middle mark of the focusing ring. Is it meant to be centered? I guess I got a Leitz one.

Of more interest to you is probably how it performs. I will be able to tell you that when my M8 returns.

The cutouts were made to align with three nubs on the back of the old Leitz lens caps. You could use the caps as a tool to take the adapter on and off the camera body.

What is even more amazing is that CV copied this just about exactly from the EL versions. It makes those old rear lens caps useful even though they cannot handle some of the WA lenses.

Nice Bokeh. I think in the end the battle is so close that I will have to go to the store and bring some attractive friend, and ask to borrow first one, then the other lens, before I decide. I am considering getting the 75 Cron and a Noctilux as my portrait lens. 100mm is a little long for a portrait lens for me.

Nice black sweater too.

Guy,
Did you take the two images with an IR cut filter? I would like to know whether there is any IQ degradation by using IR cut filter. Have you compared the same shots, one with and another one without, by any chance?

Thanks,
Joshua

Ah, no I hadn't! Thanks a lot! The more I read, the more I lean towards the 75/2, but the trouble is that I am having a hard time letting go of the 80/1.4, with which I have taken some of my very nicest pictures. Argh.

Two things change it a bit: 75 will give the field of view of 100, and f/1.4 will be more like f/1.8, if you factor in that to get the same shot, you must back up. Under these circumstances, I lean towards a Noctilux for portraits. I really need Leica to make a 65mm Lux non-Asph for portraits on the M8.

Guy, nice shot of your son. If you don't mind, since this one of the few M8 shots of a person in natural light and color that I've seen, are the skin tones in the pictures accurate? In particular, is the slight burgundy (for want of a better description) coloration around the right eye, below the lip and around the right jaw accurate or is the camera accentuating these colors? Is the other skin color accuate? Thanks

Steve
