That has to be the new LCD for the new Canon camera.
Irregardless if that image is Photoshopped, Samsung did announce a 3 inch 640 by 480 screen. It will be demo'd on August 23, but will not be produced commercially until early 2007.

I think Canon has the xxD line about where they want it until they introduce a 24x36mm sensor into this price point, which I think they will do instead of stuffing more pixels into the APS-C sensor...because they have the technology to put a 24x36mm sensor into a $1500 camera and nobody else has and because they have said that every DSLR "except the least expensive" will have a 24x36mm sensor. I would not expect to see anything other than plug-in and firmware features until the full-frame xxD comes out...perhaps at PMA 2007.
The fact that they did not introduce a new model of the 1D at its cycle "schedule" last year suggests to me that they are waiting until Photokina 2006 to unveil the "next generation" of both 1D cameras.
I'm beginning to think that real changes to Canon models are actually based on processor cycles rather than sensor cycles....Show more →
I agree about the price drop for a FF body in 2007. The new 1 series body this fall could well introduce a new processor. A 22meg 1series with increased tonal range would be knocking hard on the large format castle door.
Good G_d - (at least) another 8 days of this master-speculating. Don't think I can stand it! Someone put an end to my misery and just tell me what's coming next!
I was a local camera shop browsing for my first dslr with my wife and asked the fellow if he had heard anything about a Rebel xt replacement. He said the Canon rep had just been in the day before and said that the new camera would slot between the rebel and the 30d.
The camera store clerk also predicted a price drop in the rebel xt.
I just hope they release something new in my price range since my wife hates the feel/size of the rebel and I'd like to go with a Canon.
it seems like they would introduce something like a flagship cam...because of the 'legendary' stuff they put in that hebrew ad the other week, and because of all the hype they know they are creating. if they just came out with a new rebel, everyone would be dissapointed a little inside
i sincerely hope that they made something similar to that 3d that was posted a little while back (unfortunately i think it's fake):
There was a post a few pages back putting these product releases in the context of the broader market. I agree with pretty much everything said there. That is, there's no need (competitive pressure) for Canon to release anything interesting or to modify their upgrade schedules and the balance of their lineup.
And the fact that they are carrying on with big claims ("legendary") etc to capture random consumer attention just reinforces my view that what we're looking at is a 350D upgrade. Maybe something more, but anything truly revolutionary would be so expensive that it's barely worth promoting.
and lease don't forget that pronouncing anything new is comming doesn't mean it is comming this september. Pro-series cameras will probably be released around january ..
(see also the new pro printers..)
and also remember that the LEGENDARY status has only been seen on that israeli website. if it was truly this big for consumers they would have promoted it more.
p.s. the Pro9500 AND pro9000 have been pushed back to 2007.

Heck, I'd just be happy with a firmware upgrade on my 30D that would let me point it at a grey card, press the print button and automatically set the WB. My old G6 could do that and had two custom WB settings. It would be awesome for shooting weddings with the everchanging WB.

A guy who has been living in Japan for a number of years provided an interesting perspective on that. His point: The Japanese public did not take up PCs in the 80s and 90s to the extent that Westerners and others did, and by the time they were interested in email, cell phones using their character-based system were more convenient.
Thus: There is a very great market in Japan for cameras that download directly into printers (and for printers that directly take memory cards).
This is absolutely no excuse for foisting upon us with no programmability. On a Nikon this button would have been programmable.
OK, how about this: An all new design, with a modular sensor that can be removed and exchanged, cleaned, etc., sort of like a PCMCIA card, processing engine included. You could have a smaller format, higher-speed, high-ISO sensor for sports and PJ, a super-high resolution (22 MP? ) sensor with increased dynamic range (maybe multiple colors/pixel? ) a la the 1Ds, maybe even an IR sensor module. How 'bout a new mount that allows for one of those sensors to be larger, then an adapter for EF format? Slide 'em out, clean'em up, pick which one you want, slide it back in and you're off and running! Now that might be worth $10K. It kinda gives you pause as to why they haven't been working on any new wides in the EF line. Maybe they have been working on the wide end......Show more →

Kindof classic F1n EOS model? Removable sensors? Heck, maybe even a film back? I thought this was the concept of Nikon's F6, but never have seen one, nor have read about a digital back for that Nikon. But a new EOS flagship with these specs would probably drive Guy Mancuso and other Leica Modul users back to Canon. Even Hassy users with a digital back could be seduced to try the EOSfun. I want one like that Jeff Where can I post my pre-order?
That won't bring Guy or anyone else back. Guy owns Leicas now for three reasons: the superiour lenses, the vibrance of the colours, and to a lesser extent, the sharpness of the sensor. The true 16-bit files don't hurt either, I bet.
Canon has a long and painful battle ahead of them if they are even to have a lens lineup to rival Leica's in quality. The colour and sharpness of the cameras could definitely stand to be improved though, especially the colours.

Was the relatively minor upgrade from 20D to 30D an indication that progression in Canon's productline is going to be made at a slower pace? Then will the 1DsII have a slight upgrade to a 1DsmkIIn level (bigger LCD, Picture styles etc.)? Or was the 30D a minor upgrade because it was just an interim model that will have a revolutionary successor sooner than anyone expects? This is what happened with the D60-10D remember?
This comment makes me wonder if the 30D is a placeholder while Canon milks the 5D for all its worth. If Canon intend to introduce more FF cameras, that would make a lot of sense... That would point at a prosumer-level FF camera next, to replace the 30D, or perhaps to squeeze the 30D into the 350D segment.

Don't forget the 20D. Still an awesome camera, and can still be found new, at great prices.

The real problem is that you can't mass produce 'very' high quality lenses for next to nothing (or they would already be doing it). If Canon started to introduce lenses of Leica/Zeiss quality, at Leica/Zeiss prices they would probably sell about as many as Leica/Zeiss do, and that is not where their best return for shareholders is.
I am guessing (as most others are too), but Canons best returns will come from consumer and prosumer cameras and lenses. Having high end long teles makes sense for the sports field, because they get visibility (to the general public) very easily, so in some ways it's marketing money. But, how much visibility (to the general public) will they get from a high quality $6K 14mm prime? Pretty much none I would have thought.
With all this rife speculation, and close to 7 days before the supposed announcement date there are curiously few "leaked" photographs and spec sheets on the new introductions..
Have the camera manufactureres finally stopped playing with supposed "leaks"
Pity, it was kinda fun to get the scoop before the announcement date..

Who the hell wants another soft, CA-prone Canon wide-angle? They should fix what they have. below the 35L there isn't a decent lens.
Carstenw, calm down.
We want a -good- 18/2L.... we're not stupid enough to ask for a crappy lens. Quite frankly, i don't even care if they fix the current wides, i want an 18/2L.
