Hot girl- "That's a biiiiig lens you got there..."

Being married, I replied, "Just compensating..."

Edit: That was actually shooting with two...the 400/5.6 on the 5D and 70-200IS on the 10D.

I couldnt stop laughing...

I have no special issues with people thinking I was a "pro photographer"........I have been thought of in even less flattering terms than that.

What would make me feel awkward a bit is if people took me for some amateurish hack with money to burn who is trying to pose as a major news professional photographer. We all know who they are, right ? Ones who measure their photographic skill by the length of their lenses and price of their gear.

Consequently I do try to avoid all visible paraphernalia of the trade.....just a Lowepro 75W toploader slung on the shoulder.

what the f*#k..

is always a favourite.

"how much is that worth" is another.

but generally people just move to the side when i am carrying my white lens.

and he said unto the EOS lord, let there be light and there was WHITE.

personally i like the attention cause when someone asks questions i just hand them a card after speaking with them and sometimes i end up scoring a wedding. _peace_

I just spent 2 years on Okinawa (us air force) and my lenses/other gear often got me places and respect that i otherwise wouldn't have gotten...
More than a few times, up at Nago Circuit, while shooting drifting- i was able to just chill out in the middle of the track with the PJ's from a few Japanese car magazines (Hot Version, Quick!, etc etc) while cars drifted around us. That's always fun.
Once while i was walking around Okinawa-Minami with my 20D/Grip + 580EX + 16-35L, i was asked by some rather adorable japanese girls (in decent english, too) if i was a "professional" photographer. After a short conversation, and me foolishly saying "not really", we went our separate ways.... what a mistake that was!

Me not owning one of these lenses, I always said to my self " I bet they can pick the pubic hair off a moving fly from 200 yards away, and not miss a beat " that is just me and my sick, non humorous, mind set hah. I am envious of you guys/gals with those white lenses. Here in Orlando, they seem to be every where - whether it be sporting events or just around - people watchers every where shooting. It's funny I go to Disney some times and I see at least 8/10 people through out the day shooting with HUGE white lenses. (shrugs)

Yeah, "I bet you can see the moon with that," is common. The best answer is, "Actually, I can see the moon without it..."

nice - that would be me, when I finally get a lens big enough to attract attention. Forget the horror stories, how about the stories where the hot models come up to you and ask to shoot their pictures

Well, these brewery tour guides didn't miss my 70-200 IS from fifty feet away, and, after gesturing among themselves about the size of the lens, raised their glasses in recognition. The Sam Adams Beer Room was filled with guests, and I couldn't avoid comments from my fellow snapshooters as I tried to be discreet while shooting across the room. It was great, though -- I showed the people around me the image and struck up some nice conversation.

I don't even have a white lens (yet) but one thing I really hate hearing is when I have my 20D and 50mm or 85mm primes and people ask me, "hey how much zoom does that camera have?" "Uh, it doesn't zoom." "Doesn't zoom?! That's stupid" And sometimes it's even funny when I have the 10-20 and tell them that it's only a 2x zoom. "Geeze, my kodak EasyShare can do like 200x zoom! ( digital zoom). Or when I let my (non-phtoographer) friends take a photo with my 20D outfitted with the 85mm: "Hey how do I zoom out?" "Uh, back up." "What??"

Not white lens this time but...

Shooting indoors with some friends (them with P&S's SD400 and a Nikon Coolpix) me with 20D & 35L..

Friend 1: "Man all of my pictures are coming out kind of blurry even with the flash"
Friend 2: "Yeah I can't get better than 1/20th of a second in here even at ISO400"
Me: I'm getting like 1/200th @ ISO1600. Still wondering why I bought the DSLR?

Needless to say, most of our lunch was spent talking about what DSLRs are on the market and how to get a good entry-level kit.

p.18 #16 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

I just got my first white lens yesterday and haven't yet exposed it to public view.

But I did get a funny reaction at Mono Lake with my 10D, 16-35, and a tripod. I was waiting for sunset (which wasn't great that day) when two women with small point&shoots started loudly whispering behind me:

"Digital is so much better. I don't know why anyone wouldn't be using a digital camera."

If they had been closer, I might have agreed with them and shown them a picture on the LCD. But it got better...

"I can't understand people using such old-fashioned equipment. A tripod!" she said with a snort of disgust.

Well, there you go. Tripods are now officially old-fashioned. I guess I missed the human-firmware update that lets one hold cameras perfectly still for several seconds.

One of the most amusing reactions I've ever had was when I was shooting Egrets and Heron at a local park. I am all set up with my 500 on my Gitzo legs, flash, extender, etc. About 50 feet from me to the right, is another gentleman with a D series Nikon and a 200-400.

A gentleman and his wife arrive with him holding what looked to be a D70 with a 70-300 consumer grade lens. He stands behind us about 30-40 feet. I don't hear any shutter noise, but about 30 seconds later I hear his wife ask him "Aren't you going to take pictures, sweetie?". I turn around and just watch him shake his head as he begins to walk away.

p.18 #20 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

My wife and I were walking around a big art fair with my then brand-new 20D and 24-70 2.8L. We went into a photographer's booth, looked around, left to continue our walk around.

My wife then tells me that the photographer just about fell off his stool trying to crane to see what kind of gear I was carrying.

So - It probably goes both ways.

I don't mind answering people's questions, and generally just pass off the "that's a serious camera" comments with vague agreement.

When my wife was trying to get some photos in Seattle's Pike Place Market for an assignment she was working, we found, quite by accident, that a big Q-Flash on a frame over the camera DOES tend to clear the crowd out of the shot for a few seconds. We try to work fast so as not to totally gnarl things up. "What magazine are you shooting for?" "Just a school assignment" Dissapointed look.
