This is silly because the 100S line and the Zf are the same size.

The Z8 is absolutely not big for what it offers.

You tend to need a lens to take a photo.

I'll zag on this one. If we disregard the Z9II rumors (and I'm inclined to agree with Scott above, I think a push to 2027 is possible if not likely), then I think we might see a Zfc II this year. Retro cameras continue to be hugely popular and a more fleshed out, less plastic Zfc could be a big mover for Nikon.

I actually had the exact same thought but thought better than to bring it up, mostly because some e-doofuses would complain about a heavier Zfc

I tend to have different lenses for different cameras and purposes. The GF50 is quite compact, and the Z 70–200 is quite large, and sometimes I use either for a walk in the park. But that's not relevant to the discussion. Or are you implying that comparable Sony lenses are significantly larger than Nikon's? The Z8 is a huge camera, despite being made to be a "compact" version of an even larger camera.

You compared a Z8 to a GFX. Of course a 70-200 is a bigger lens than a 50 3.5. I have no idea what you’re trying to argue.

This is not how it works unless you think in terms like "autofocus should take 2 fl oz, etc." You compare it to its peers. For me, that would be the Sony A1.

"For me" and there you go. You know, the Z9 is also its peer, but I know that's wildly inconvenient for you

Congrats on completely derailing a thread with this wildly irrelevant rant, though.

I thought I'd prefer to carry the Z6iii vs the Z8 as a daily carry, but in my Ona Bowery (which fits a full frame mirrorless body with lens and a 2nd lens next to it) the Z8 takes up about the same size so I sold my Z6iii.

I used to have a 1Dx, but nowadays my OM-1 takes care of birding needs, and I’ve drawn the line at the R5, Z6III sizes for full frame. If I needed the resolution and performance of the Z8, maybe I would consider it, but I don’t.

Smaller is better. Unless you’re using large lenses and need the grip. Then more larger is better.

But it remains that Nikon trends large to larger where as Sony trends small to medium large. So naturally there would be more unmet demand for small Nikon.

I want a smaller Z8, and that's the topic - future Nikon cameras. You folks, for some reason, think the Z8 is not that big (which is factually untrue) and Ok, and it's your business to think that way, but it has nothing to do with my dreams. Who is derailing what?

There is no "fact" to whether the Z8 is big or small. It's all relative to your preferences and physical size. I would dwarf 90% of you

Go shoot an A1 II if size is your golden metric, it's exactly what you want.

No, it is not. I declared quite clearly what I want and expect from Nikon. I don't see for what possible reason you don't like it, or argue against easily verifiable facts, or measure camera features in volume metrics. If you have something to say at least bring some good argument or data.

With all the Z9 rumors swirling they might push something soon. I think they need a new processor with some big improvements to get people to change. Pros will want parity with other brands in speed and resolution.

I'd love to pick up an Olympus Pen-F and some tiny M43 lenses, but for the most part 99% of the time I prefer to use my iphone for personal photos.

I do wish the Z8 was less porky, but it fits my needs so well and is a great backup rig to my Z9. Z9 is mostly for work and video projects. I liked the fliparound screen on the Z6iii, but I didn't find it noticeably more convenient to carry than my Z8.

The Z30 I tested out for a few months though was great, but a few things bugged me enough about it that I sold it on. I'm quite tempted to pick up a Z50ii though, as with the DX lenses it is just so small and fun to use, and the EVF on it is not bad at all for such a small affordable camera.

There is no reason for the next Z8 to be a giant.

Remember, a bulk of the Z8 user base was coming from D5's and D850's. Two form factors that have been around since before Nikon even made consumer digital cameras. Nikon evidently wanted to continue with that form factor, and that appears to suit the market fine right now. Those users were still shooting bigger bodies when Sony's alternatives existed, and the sentiment that Sony's were too small was not uncommon among DSLR holdouts.

So I absolutely think there's a reason for the first generation of Nikon flagships to be the size of the outgoing flagships.

I don't feel like the Z8 is giant, but I have large hands. The Z9 fits perfectly in my hand, it's so damn comfortable, but def not very travel friendly haha. I hated how most of my pinky would hang off the bottom of the Sony bodies.

I don't either. I rented the Z9 for a week and had a really difficult time taking it back to the shop. It finally felt like a real successor to my F5 But since going from the D500 to the D5, I'd really missed having my main body be D500-sized, so I decided to get the Z8 instead. Plus I wanted pixel shift for film scanning.

My plan was to just use it long enough for a Z9II to come out and then it'd get traded in. But at this point, the Z8 is sticking around regardless of whether or not I get a Z9II. It's just been great going back to this size of body.

Going from a Z6 to the Z8 was a big improvement for me. I felt like holding my D500/D750 from DSLR days. This size just fits my hands better and just feels right. When I added back a Z6III I got the grip to keep it bigger. I think there is room for both pro size big cameras and smaller ones.

Maybe eventually the Z7III can come back as the smaller option rather than shrinking the Z8II which I think would be a mistake.

I think a Z9 II is likely to come this year.

I personally would like to see a Z7 III with Expeed 7 and similar AF and general features improvements as in the Zf. I don't necessarily need more than 45 MP, however, the Z8's relatively gritty appearance vs. D850 at low ISO does make me feel there is room for a better "image quality first" sensor in the Z camera lineup.
