I used to think that the Z8 is meaningfully larger than the Z6iii, which is why I chose to move from a Z6 to a Z6iii instead of a used Z8. Then I bought a used Z8 when I got into birding and am having a hard time seeing a meaningful difference in size and weight between a Z8 and the Z6/Z7 line.
Yeah, I find "I can handle a Z6/Z7, but a Z8 is so big/heavy" a little silly given how big the lenses are today. If you've got especially big or small hands so you've got to literally consider grip size, that makes more sense to me. But if it's the size/weight of your kit/pack, the body is making such a small marginal difference these days, probably even if you're only carrying one lens (especially true for you with birding lenses, of course).

It depends on what lenses you use. If your idea of a day’s walk is a body and a short prime, there’s a big difference. If you’re birding, not so much.

All the serious bird photographers I know are using the Z9. Some also have a Z8.
I really expect the Z9 to upgraded first and the Z8 later if ever. The Z8 may become a different line.
Remember that the D700 was the same as the D3 sensorwise, but not the subsequent generation.

I prefer to carry the GFX as an EDC, partially because it is not as tall as the Z8 and fits much better into my sling bag. I don't need the Z8's performance anymore, and with no path to move forward, I might just take the hit and get rid of Nikon altogether.

I don’t see the Z9 getting smaller unless they can improve the battery size with equivalent performance. When using it with large lenses( a big part of my use with the Z9) I don’t consider the size to be an issue.
I still feel the D850 to be the best rounded of Nikon DSLR’s and therefore have never felt the Z8 to be too big.
I also feel we’re at a point of diminishing returns in performance with respect to IQ and don’t see a huge technology leap unless someone considers larger sensors to be a tech leap.

maybe a new Z8 will be the Z7II follow up in a smaller package? I would appreciate this.
I never used any of the top bodies because of price and weight an overkill for me.
I would appreciate a small body with a larger sensor like Z7 or Z8 line as opposed to the smaller sensor of Z6 line.

I agree. They need to come up with something completely different.

Pretty clear what that next step is: dual gain output with stacked or partially stacked sensors.
The Sony A7V and Panasonic S1II already do it. Yields about a stop of DR improvement at low ISO. But high ISO remains similar to before.
They might also add a HDR pipeline to the image processing similar to what the Hasselblad X2Dii does.

The next step is the globular shutter without the noise penalty, but that is all up to Sony so who knows.
As far as I know Nikon has no other suppliers for the high-grade sensors.
The a7V still has a relatively slow readout in ES, yet MS is only 10FPS.
I doubt the Z8 II and certainly not the Z9 II are going to be crappy like that.

Sony a7V readout speed is 1/60 with a partially stacked sensor. It is also a camera in a different class and price bracket, comparable to the Z6 III, not the Z8 or Z9.
A Z8 II or Z9 II will have a fully stacked sensor with faster readout. I wouldn't be too surprised if Nikon gave two options: "normal" mode with dual gain output which effectively doubles the readout speed but grants +1 stop DR at lower ISO and a "sports" mode without dual gain that gives you the fastest readout speed.
For the latter mode, there would be no IQ advantage over the current gen.
For a Z7 III it could be interesting if they put in a partially stacked version of the 45mp sensor or even the 60mp sensor. Yes Nikon gets their sensors from Sony, but they have regularly gotten sensors that were not available "off the shelf" e.g. that fully stacked 45mp sensor of the Z8/Z9.

The latest rumors from Nikonrumors claim 1/720s read out speed and medium format like image quality at ISO32.
They are not really a rumor site but more an early announcement one. They have been right 100% of the time these past years.
I don't see why they'd be wrong this time. If the sensor of the Z9II were the same as that of the Z9 Nikon wouldn't have had to wait 5 years. Something significant is coming, that is 100% sure.
The only real question is whether Trump's insane wars and inflational policies will delay its release or not.

Hate to be a party pooper, but that's an AI slop video posted by one of the countless AI slop channels on YouTube. That's not a real person doing the voiceover or writing the script, and the bot who threw it together probably just scraped old promotional footage for the included clips.

Maybe so. But the camera predictions are very believable.
So, do you have documentation to support your claim?

Nikonrumors has been wrong a lot of times and these specs are almost certainly false, too. That guy is not afraid to share rumors based on random posts in Chinese social media.. Happy to be proven wrong but I don't think I will be
