Nikon’s next move: What camera body are you expecting?

Given where the Z system stands right now, what do you think is the most logical next release?

Z 7 III

Z 30 II

Z 9 II

or something new?

Are there any gaps in the current lineup (resolution, speed, video capabilities, price tier) according to you?

I’d love an APS-C camera with IBIS. Just keep it roughly the same size as the Z50 II and it would make a perfect travel camera. The lack of IBIS is the only downside to the otherwise outstanding Z50 II.

With that said I think the next release will be the Z9 II.

The rumors are there’s a Z9 II coming, though I’d think they should release a Z7 III.

The latter would affect Z8 sales, so the Z7 line may be dead. Pity, because the Z8 is too large and heavy for many who would otherwise consider Nikon.

The latest rumor on the Z9 II is that it is likely delayed due to the supply chain and costs. I think last year most people figured it would be here by the World Cup but there's no way that happens.

I wouldn't be surprised if it slips into spring of 2027 personally, as everyone holds their breath to see what happens with the global economy this year. Things are going to get a lot worse in the short term before they get better and a flagship camera will be a much tougher sell.

The reason I don't see another APS-C camera right now is mostly because their lens lineup is so pitiful. The best glass to use on it are the third parties they are suing. Perhaps a Z 30 II because it would be a parts bin camera and "easy" upgrade.

I still think the Z8 is doing too well for the Z7 III to come, because it WILL consume sales and be a lower priced product if it's what we all want (the Z7 II sensor with Expeed 7). I am more inclined to think this camera, if it ever happens, will be the very last Expeed 7 camera released and the final one of the Z7 line.

I want more than the plethora of 45MP bodies. That is so 2017 I'm over it.
We need 60+ MP with a decent readout speed, not like the 2019 Sony sensor.

A rangefinder style body would be great, along with some smaller pancake size primes.
Firmware update to the ZR that allows recording to SSD via USB
A medium format body that is 150mp

z9 II and or Z7 III would be my guess. A 30mp professional aps-c would be pretty cool though I'm not sure there will be a huge demand. I'll be standing in line for that one.

I’d love a Z50 sized FX body but we won’t get it. A Z3 (Z30 FX) would be interesting and we maybe get it.

I’m sold on Expeed 7 but I need a prosumer body with a screen that doesn’t articulate to the side, freaking hate that. But probably won’t get it as its a higher end feature it seems.

Z9II is a given and then cascade through the line starting with Z8II. I think that by fall that process will begin. That said, it's the Z7 that interests me. Nikon have an opportunity with it. Make a Z7III that is a reduced Z8 right after the Z8II debuts, which, frankly, is boring and redundant. Or use it as a testbed for higher MP sensors but using the Expeed 7. So, a 60mp+ sensor optimized for high DR and color fidelity, not speed. That would be way more interesting than a slightly cut down Z8.

A compact new Z8 or a significantly better Z7 will do.
Or fun little fixed lens camera done right?

I used to think that the Z8 is meaningfully larger than the Z6iii, which is why I chose to move from a Z6 to a Z6iii instead of a used Z8. Then I bought a used Z8 when I got into birding and am having a hard time seeing a meaningful difference in size and weight between a Z8 and the Z6/Z7 line. Will probably selling the Z6iii soon.

I thought I'd prefer to carry the Z6iii vs the Z8 as a daily carry, but in my Ona Bowery (which fits a full frame mirrorless body with lens and a 2nd lens next to it) the Z8 takes up about the same size so I sold my Z6iii.

I find it to be a rather significant difference. So much so that after a year with the Z8 I eventually sold it for the Z6 III (and later the Z5 II).

And I make the same argument about the irrelevance of camera sizes if you need to carry it in a bag. But the Z8 is larger than the GFX100S II, and that is just not acceptable to me. Sony got the size right, why not Nikon?

I want the people around me to mostly ignore me, and that happens with the OM-1, and now the Q3. With the GFX or Z8, people stop to watch what I'm doing, start asking questions, making mostly inappropriate-for-the-situation jokes, etc. The Q3 is a magnet for other photographers, though.

Sony bodies are terrible for the large hands. My fingers crush between the grip and lens mount.
Cameras like the Z8 are a good mid size, hardly too large.
I really don't understand how the human body has changed in recent years and cameras unnecessarily small. If you wnat to replicate the Minox like the spy, use a cell phone. Anyone can see you using a camera with ILC.

I'll zag on this one. If we disregard the Z9II rumors (and I'm inclined to agree with Scott above, I think a push to 2027 is possible if not likely), then I think we might see a Zfc II this year. Retro cameras continue to be hugely popular and a more fleshed out, less plastic Zfc could be a big mover for Nikon.

What's right for you may not be right for others. Plenty of people dislike Sony's ergonomics.

Thst doesn’t make sense to me. I can only fit one lens mounted on the body with the GFX100S in the Bowery. My go to 45-100 f4 won’t fit at all even unmounted with the body next to it. I can carry a prime plus a 24-120 f4 in the Bowery easily, which makes for a great walk around kit.

I dislike Sony's ergonomics to the point that I cannot comfortably hold their cameras at all. Otherwise, I would probably shoot Sony. My point still stands - they have cameras that are significantly smaller and have better or at least similar functionality. There is no reason for the next Z8 to be a giant.

Come on people. Arguing that Z8 size is not that big is absolutely pointless

gfx vs z8

Nikon z8 is a monster of a camera
