Why is my A7iv so Complicated to Set Up?

p.1 #1 · Why is my A7iv so Complicated to Set Up?

Just got a new A7iv a couple of weeks ago, and I thought I did a pretty decent job of setting it up until I downloaded some images onto my computer.

Some of the images were outdoors of an Osprey in its nest, other images were indoors of a family gathering. The one thing both sets of images had in common were that they were lackluster, lacked detail, not one single image was sharp, and the noise from the indoor shots was extremely noticeable. Not to sound like a jerk, but the images looked identical to the ones I got with a Panasonic point & shoot I sold not too long ago.

I tried setting it up with the same settings I use on my old A7c, but it seems like the menu system in the A7iv is completely different (almost like it was made by a different manufacturer). Not being one to give up easily, I purchased "David Busch's Sony A7IV Guide to Digital Photography" book plus I googled several sources to find out more about the menu settings. One thing the book and all the online sources had in common was that they all had absolutely different menu options, like if they were referring to different cameras!!

So, I'm thinking of several scenarios here:

1. None of the online sources or David Busch have actually used a Sony A7iv, and they were most likely using Chatgpt to compile their info.

2. Sony decided to make 792 different variations of the A7iv, each with unique menu systems just to keep everyone busy trying to figure out how to set it up.

3. I have developed some rare form of photodyslexia that renders me incapable of deciphering the menu system of the A7iv.

What am I trying to photograph? Everything in general. I don't use tripods. I want to capture details on both static and moving objects. I want to take pictures of birds, people, buildings, storm clouds, and my dog. I shoot indoors, outdoors, low light, and sometimes lots of light.

My current "settings" (as best as I can tell) are:

- Image Quality= JPEG/HEIF Switch, Slot 1 JPEG extra fine, 33m. (I tried RAW, and RAW + JPEG, but the results were even worse).

- High ISO NR= Low (I set it to Off at first, but the noise was ridiculously high, so I set it to Low).

- Color Space = SRGB

- Lens Compensation = Auto for all (using Tamron lenses).

- AF= Continuous, (Balanced Emphasis for both AF-S and AF-C), AF Tracking sensitivity to 1 (locked on), AF Illuminator to Auto, Aperture Drive in AF to standard, AFw/Shutter to On, Pre-AF to off. The other 5 pages of options for AF are how it came from the factory.

So, my question is where can I find a good source for understanding my menu options (and no, the online manual will most likely be just as complicated and non-intuitive to use as every online manual for every camera ever produced by every single camera manufacturer ever).

Note: I know there is always a steep lurning curve when buying a new camera, but I've owned and successfully used a bunch of cameras (Sony A7c, Nikon D750, Canon 6dmk2, 7dmk2, R6, R6II, R7, OM-5, GRIII, etc.). This A7iv has proven to be the most challenging of all my previous cameras.

That's probably your biggest mistake - shooting in JPEG is simply hoping the camera can somehow predict your expectations of how the final image should look.

The A7IV is fundamentally no different than any other current mirrorless camera - and certainly not more complicated. If you're hoping for instant gratification, a smart phone will do a much better job.

My results from shooting RAW were no different.

Also, thanks for you "helpful" insight. Next time at least try to read to the end of the original post before commenting. Did you get to the part regarding all the other cameras I have used successfully? If not, please re-read my post.

How/where do you process the raw?
Do you shoot in aperture priority, full manual, or some other mode? What is your typical aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in the photos that don’t look good to you?

What camera settings would improve any of those issues in any camera? Aren't all those things under your control through choice of lens, focus, exposure and composition?

If you could show an example we might offer better feedback.

p.1 #6 · Why is my A7iv so Complicated to Set Up?

Two years ago, I bought my very first digital camera, the A7IV. Considering that my previous camera didn't even have a built-in light meter and you could only adjust two things (aperture and shutter speed), I was initially quite overwhelmed by the online manual. But then I simply thought about what was important to me, looked up the available options in the manual, experimented, and gradually adapted the camera to my needs. I was in my mid-50s and completely clueless about digital photography, but I had no problems. And the technical quality of the images was very good from the start. In short: study the manual carefully and then follow its instructions.

I tried shooting in aperture priority mode for the outdoor/daylight shots and manual (auto iso) for the indoor shots. I try keeping my shutter to 2x the focal length of any lens I use, plus I stop down one or two stops to improve contrast.

Also, I process the RAW images on Photoshop.

Something is seriously amiss, here. You mentioned that you shoot 1/(2*FL), yet do not experience sharp images.

I have never shot the A7IV, but do shoot the A7R5, A1 & A1 II and almost never have shots that are short of pin-sharp... even at fairly slow shutter speeds.

Perhaps, you have a faulty camera.

Prosumer mirrorless cameras will generally always have complicated menu's compared to DSLR's. I really appreciate all that complication, which allows me to really optimize programming for the various venues that I shoot. Mark Galer has produced some outstanding videos on how to optimize Sony camera settings and I highly recommend them. I also like Gary Friedman's books. There are others, such as Bush.

Having shot Sony mirrorless for eleven years, and having learned all the nuances of the extensive menu system, I have grown to really appreciate all the programming flexibility provide by these cameras.

As a note, I virtually never shoot JPG's out of the camera. I, and others, have found that the complex algorithms in various RAW converter algorithms on a PC will nearly always produce superior results to the camera JPG's which utilize simpler conversion algorithms due to more limited processing power. I do appreciate, however, those that have a need to publish directly from the camera to social media, etc.

You might have a faulty camera. I’ve used multiple Sony models (A7III, A9, A1, A7RIV) and never experienced the issues you mentioned in your post.

As for the camera menu system being complicated, I think that’s more of a Japanese design trait. My Nikon D800 was the same, and my Fuji X100VI is also like this. UI/UX has never been a strong suit of these companies.

Before futzing with the menus anymore just put it on Auto and see what you get. If nothing is better then it's likely the camera and not you.

As someone who has used Nikon and Canon since before there were menus, I agree that Sony menus rather suck, but you can find most of the settings in there and save then to a CAMSET.DAT file. The first thing to do is ditch the jpegs and shoot ARW on a tripod. It's not clear what lenses you are using, so maybe they are not so great copies or some other issue. At some point you have to decide why you are bouncing around and what you are missing.

Currently using three lenses:

- Tamron 20-40mm f2.8
- Tamron 17-28mm f2.8
- Tamron 28-200mm f2.8/5.6

Since most of the pics involved family members, I'll take some more in the next few days and post them.

Hearing this misconception indicates that you need to learn some basic photographic skills before you can apply the correct settings to your camera.

I've been taking pictures since buying my first camera 47 years ago. Nice way to insult someone who has lenses older than you.

Right, unless somehow the camera is defective. I would do a simple test. Set the camera to full Auto, on a tripod (no IBIS), and 2 sec delay and shoot a static well lit scene….not too crazy dynamic range. If the image is still lackluster and unsharp, then it’s possible you have a faulty camera. Otherwise, it’s a case of non optimal camera settings and/or user error

No insult intended. How do you know how old I am?

I know a lot of people that have owned cameras and have been taking pictures for decades but never fully grasped the more advanced photographic concepts. Everyone works at their own level to their own satisfaction. Don't worry, you're not alone.

It's not unusual for a lens to have improved contrast 1 stop down, especially a zoom. Sometimes even 1/3 stop down makes a noticeable difference. I would be stopping down those Tamron zooms to f/8 for testing purposes on a tripod. At the expected lens quality there won't be too much diffraction at 33MP. It might be useful to try a really good E mount prime also.

Without knowing what you changed at this point maybe do a factory reset then put it in M and make some well lit images to post and share.

Is the firmware up to date?

I assume the lenses have been used with the other Sony cameras you have owned?

Yes, I use them on my A7c, and they are super sharp from f4 up.
