My current "settings" (as best as I can tell) are:

- Image Quality= JPEG/HEIF Switch, Slot 1 JPEG extra fine, 33m. (I tried RAW, and RAW + JPEG, but the results were even worse).

That's probably your biggest mistake - shooting in JPEG is simply hoping the camera can somehow predict your expectations of how the final image should look.

The A7IV is fundamentally no different than any other current mirrorless camera - and certainly not more complicated. If you're hoping for instant gratification, a smart phone will do a much better job.

What camera settings would improve any of those issues in any camera? Aren't all those things under your control through choice of lens, focus, exposure and composition?

If you could show an example we might offer better feedback.

Right, unless somehow the camera is defective. I would do a simple test. Set the camera to full Auto, on a tripod, and 2 sec delay and shoot a static well lit scene….not too crazy dynamic range. If the image is still lackluster and unsharp, then it’s possible you have a faulty camera. Otherwise, it’s a case of non optimal camera settings and/or user error
