I’d be very interested to see how well the EVO lenses are corrected compared to the Voigtländer APO series. I expect the same level of bokeh nervousness, but I do hope they deliver flatter field curvature.

I'm also looking specifically to see how flat field the lens is. The 50mm Air is sharp but certainly not flat field. An APO flat field lens would be very welcome. I also hope the AF accuracy is improved over the Air which simply doesn't focus accurately for me on multiple A7r4 bodies in AF-C mode. AF-S is fine.

The 35 EVO has considerably more nervous bokeh than the 35 APO-L in my testing.
Very detailed review, thanks Scott! and thanks Chaliel too for the review links with portrait samples. I'm interested in getting the 35/1.8 Sony version. The bokeh wide open looks excellent to me. My only hesitation is that I just got the Sony 40/2.5 G as well as the Sigma 35/1.4 DG HSM Art.
I was excited for these two lenses as I'm looking to put together a set of small AF primes, after seeing reviews, a little less excited haha. Looks like a great small option with a lot of features we don't see in budget lenses. Love the lack of CA, which absolutely killed the 55z for me, watching all that purple shimmering in my videos made it an immediate catch and release ! The vignette wide open shown in the video below is really bad and there is some focus breathing, gonna wait for some comparisons with the smaller Sigma's before deciding.
I'm actually really interested to try to the 55mm version now. I am flush with 35mm options already, but my 50ish lineup consists of simply the CV 50 APO and Helios 44-4 (58mm). Would be nice to have this rendering with AF.
Thank you Scott for your review. On Sony I already owned the Viltrox 85/2.0 EVO and now I went ahead and ordered the Sony version of the Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.8 II FE lens. Already got a great deal on B&H for $315, a $55 reduction on the $370 list price for the Sony version. Really curious to compare it to the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 and the Sigma 35mm f/2.0 DG DN Contemporary.

Curious to hear your thoughts on how it stacks up to the Contemporary, which seems to be a logical competitor on E mount.
Nicely crafted review! When you mention other lenses “in your cabinet,” that’s your newish huge Ruggard, yes? Your “tiny” old one continues to be well and is prospering here, even though it’s the spring rainy season in East Dallas.

Hah, yes, and my new "huge" one has mysteriously filled itself up quite quickly...odd!
Scott great job with the review! I really enjoyed the variety of high quality sample images. The only thing I think would be nice to add to future reviews is some commentary on vignetting.
At a high level, how did you feel it compares to the CV 35mm APO optically?

Good point about vignette...this review was literally down to the wire because of weather, I'll make sure to throw some comparisons into the blog post.
At a VERY high level, there's still not a 35mm Z lens I like better optically than the CV APO. The hardest thing to come to grips with the EVO is the bokeh which can be varied shot to shot and not entirely predictable, compared to the subdued and muted bokeh of the CV.
I also like the overall colors that come out of CV lenses more than Viltrox, especially in this case. The EVO has a yellowish tint over every photo which you can edit around, it's just more work. The CVs meter nice and warm and the Viltrox lenses meter quite cool, but also sometimes hotter than other lenses.
