Interesting. I assume that it is the same camera and the white balance is set manually to the same value - for both images. Is that correct?

See the edit: the Viltrox meters 200k warmer on average by default (1st set). 2nd set of images are completely normalized to each other and the Viltrox still has a yellow tint.

I see the same things you describe. Thank you for clarifying.

A bokeh test, just to see shapes at distance across the frame. Note that the Viltrox devolves into cat eyes rather quickly, though the edges of each shape have far less definition than the Nikon.

In the near ground, the bokeh on the tire rimes is noticeably busier on the Viltrox, though I'm starting to think this is because the Viltrox has less effective bokeh as mentioned before.

Just got back from a trip to Oregon with friends and family where I had the opportunity tu use the 35EVO on the A7CR. Loved the size and ergo, the sharpness and flare resistance, but I struggled with the look of tbe images on the camera screen. So today I went out and shot the x-rite color chart hand held outside at 5PM, the EVO the GM and the CZ 24F1.8
Uploaded to Claude I asked for color profile comparison. Tbe CZ required a lot of changes but to match the GM was surprisingly simple:
Yellow sat -9
Green hue +2
Green sat +3
I also used the lens profile for 35F2.8 and the final images were pretty nice!
Need to shoot morevwith this lens to learn what this lens is best suited for, has potential.

I had a lightbulb moment whilst taking some product shots of the 55, and that is that all 3 EVO lenses have such small front elements that in theory, I should be able to use a step-down adapter to convert the filter thread from 58mm to 52mm without issue.

After some testing, that is confirmed. Nice to unlock my catalog of 52mm filters with an $8 step down adapter.

Stacked a mist and cpl for giggles during testing:

Played around with my35/1.8 EVO. I am pleased with the soft look of the tulip. But I managed to produce some CA on the top of the flower at f 2.0

How about a zoom?
24-70/4 for starters?
Or are they making us buy more primes first?

Thank you.
I have the same experience, perhaps a little less of the AF problems you described. The gallery is nice but clicking the images don't do anything.

Viltrox brothers, IF you are using the 55 EVO and have it upgraded to firmware 1.08, you might want to consider downgrading back to 1.07. I was losing lens connection with my A7V when it went into power saving mode. i had to unmount and remount to get it work. After downgrading today, it seems to be working back to normal. I am loving this EVO lineup, I have all three of them and they are now my go to lenses. Also, BEWARE if you are using this with the Nikon E to Z adapter, the 55 will NOT lock into the adapter.

How do you downgrade a lens firmware now that they want you to use the app to update?

Well, I plugged the lens in this morning using the Viltrox app, and it showed it was version 1.08, and to upgrade it would be 1.07. I clicked proceed, and it went back. I didn't see 1.08 available at all. After I upgraded the first time, I noticed my camera froze when I mounted the 55 to it. I've been letting it go to sleep on my desk and waking it and it's back to normal.

Great review Scott. Interesting that you use CPL and mist filters on some shots. I think I can see that and I like that the main subject is still very sharp but the 'mist' softens the overall look. Would you say that is the case?

I wondered what CPL and mist filters you chose to use and how strong the mist filter was, if you are happy to share.

Thanks Rob, I use the Moment Cinebloom 10% for mist and Maven magnetic CPL. I have a long term review of the Maven system coming later this year, as I was trying to consolidate all my filters into a single magnetic system, but I still like other brands' mist filters better than Maven's, so abominations like this filter stack are happening

You are correct that the mist filter doesn't really take the sharpness away, and mist effects are generally cut in about half by adding a CPL.

Very interesting that the combination of CPL and mist filter produces a subtler result. I might play around with that when my 35 EVO arrives. Look forward to your Maven review when you are ready with it. Let us know on the Sony Forum and I will spot it there.

It's interesting that it's Viltrox that keeps realizing Sonys vision of smaller FF systems – seemingly one fundamental idea from the OG A7 – at least at the wide end.

I already have the 14/4. Ideally I would like to be using the Nokton 28/1.5 all the time when shooting ~28mm. But realistically, using wider than 35 so very infrequently, a 26/2.8 at this size is what I'll actually bring, and use. I still glance at the CV 28/1.5 often (and I want it bad), but this is the no-brainer compromise that makes sense for me.

Hope to find it performs well.
