My X2D II came in.
Quick observations and notes from an X2D owner:
- New material/finish is different. You may mistake it for plastic, it is not.
- Body Color, I would call it a dark gray, but I won't hesitate to say I like the color the X2D more
- Subtle Hasselblad branding, no paint or laser engraving on the front, is likely a good move for most
- Camera feels a bit lighter weight
- Body Doors did receive a nice little update. For us CFexpress card users, you'll notice that for sure
- New Grip Pattern is fine, I'd say a bit less aggressive on the palm perhaps
- Joystick is nice and responsive for moving your focus point, nice addition
- Custom Button is well placed, also nice addition
- LCD Quality, interesting differences between models, but this I'd say is an improvement
- LCD Articulation, major improvement in my opinion for waist level and above head framing
- GUI/HUI, generally things feel a bit snappier compared side by side with the X2D
- EVF Sensor, ever so slightly faster
- EVF Quality, I personally wouldn't mind a higher resolution one, but this works just fine
- AF-C surprisingly good, but as always it will depend on your subject and lighting to a degree
- Subject Tracking, also pretty impressive and I see now where LiDAR comes in, not just in lighting, but also in tracking speed. Sensor refresh rate isn't the fastest for PDAF, I suspect LiDAR is helping here as well. More testing to know for sure.
* Tested AF-C and tracking on 25, 38, 55, and 90 XCDV Series Primes.
- Sensor Calibration did take a bit longer compared to the previous model, my first one was 17 minutes
- Relief and happy to have a physical Shutter Release Port again. Will test that shortly.
* Technical tests compared to previous model between now and next week, just so I know a few things
- I "mentally" like ISO 50 as a lower sensitivity starting point.
I can see some taking a minute to adapting to the Joystick and Custom Button placement. But I will say for moving your focus point, and especially while magnified, it's a big improvement. Touch screen can still be used or disabled for that as well.
No notes on IBIS yet, but I'll dig into it, performed a hilarious low ISO test shot tonight just to see if I can do it. Though I generally approve the way CIBA testing methodology works for defining how many stops, I do like to remind people that you yourself move different potentially than the hexapod shaker tester as well as the subject matter. If you are trying to pull off a 2 second or longer exposure handheld and hoping for critical sharpness, a tripod is still the right tool for the job. But if you know what you're doing and can concentrate, it's amazing what you can do.
Tip on first startup. Put on a good show, movie, or some music and take your time setting up the camera the way you want with the controls. Then download the firmware for your camera and applicable lenses. Keep the camera on for 5-10 minutes before you do the Sensor Calibration. Run the Sensor Calibration after you update the camera's firmware in case they update anything crucial there.
Open to any questions. Shooting all weekend tests and other with both the new and the older camera....Show more →
Nice input on the diff's.
While the new AF capabilities are top of list for many folks ... curious about manual focus experience diff's. Particularly with non-V lenses if you've got any of those, but V lenses, too.
