This camera is probably not for me for a variety of reasons but I gotta say as someone who owns both a Leica m11 and a Fuji Gfx100rf right now, you don’t really need IBIS for a lot of situations if you’re focused on photography.

For video, imo, competent ibis matters a lot more.

I do think the q3 43mm and then the Gfx100rf are my favorite cameras in this genre in that order but this rx1riii isn’t a bad choice by any means.

After a decade of waiting I kind of was hoping for a little more innovation. Sony has watched the competition release multiple versions of compact cameras. This seems kind of like the bare minimum you'd expect from a camera release. Pricing is insane.

IBIS is definitely not a requirement for photography, since it can't stop subject motion blur and it's something we never had in the DSLR days. But it's definitely a nice user experience enhancement having a stable viewfinder, and being able to push the shutter speed a stop or 2 lower in low light with stationary subjects.

If RXIII was under 4k I would find the lack of IBIS less surprising. It's the combo of a premium priced camera missing premium features that I find surprising. But I am probably not the target market for this camera, as I don't put a large premium on small size, and don't need a camera with a non detachable lens.

Seems like Sony Japan is releasing August 8th? I guess NA/EU will get it first.

I decided to purchase the Sony RX1R III as a way of resolving a long-standing sense of missed opportunity. When the RX1R II was released, I was captivated by its design and image quality, but at the time I wasn’t in a position to afford it. Over the years, that camera became emblematic of a personal moment, a combination of aspiration, creative desire, and financial constraint. I’ve often looked back on that decision with some regret, not just because of the gear itself, but because of what it represented: a path not taken in both artistic exploration and personal reward.

Now, with the release of the RX1R III, I see an opportunity to honor that earlier version of myself. Especially I recently got a pretty good new job offer. Buying the RX1R III isn’t just about specs or performance; it’s about reconnecting with that impulse, fulfilling a deferred intention, and reclaiming a bit of lost time.

I like the idea of a good quality, compact camara but I baulk at the price of the Fuji X100 IV for a fixed lens camera, so personally I am not going to even consider buying a fixed lens camera at the price Sony wants for the RX1R III (albeit it is has a full-frame sensor while the Fuji has an APS-C sensor). Still, I assume Sony knows its market and is confident there will be buyers despite the price.

Not much to add. But I like having a time stamp of my thoughts. For those that want one for a used price it might be tough to find one for a long time. I expect this will not be a volume seller. Off by about $1200 for the package. And no IBIS in 2025 with this dense sensor is going to make the keeper rate much lower. I really like my a7cR. So nice to travel with. It can be super small with the 40 2.5G (love it) or I can hang a 100-400 off it and use

Truthfully, my hit rate on the II with no IBIS and much crappier AF is quite high. I am struggling to find reasons not to pare back and use this as my primary travel camera while keeping one other body for ILC just for socials at work.

I had the RX1 and the RX1R. That was before Sony's mirrorless cameras came out and they were in the mid $2k price point. $5100 is crazy for this type of camera. I guess they think they are on par with Leica Q3 but who is this for?

On the subject of IBIS in general: it is not a requirement for photography, but neither is AF, nor is 61MP a requirement. And one does not need a LCD screen either. The point about IBIS (or OIS in case of Leica Qxx) is the ability to shoot at base ISO at way lower shutter speeds than most people can without stabilization and still ensure tripod equivalent results. How was it done during the good old DSLR days is the same as asking how did people travel before automobiles - via a horse carriage.

If someone doesn't need stabilization then great. But those who have experienced it understand that it opens up a lot possibilities.

Leica got this right with OIS in Q series.

With that out of the way, I hope RX1R prices fall further. Had that a decade ago and while it was slippery little eel, the results were worth it.

The price of the RX1r in 2025 would be about $4500 if you take inflation into account. Not really much different than today’s rx1r3 price.

But the Q cameras are much larger and heavier than the RX1r cameras…not to mention even more expensive. Could you imagine the whining here if Sony came out with a $6,700 RX1r that was much larger but had ibis. You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

For those that think these posting are overly critical, just wait for the introduction of the Zeiss ZX II.

IBIS likely would have made the camera fatter, and I personally prefer it thinner without it. That's a tradeoff I'm happy to make, and as others have said, you can certainly take many great, sharp photos without IBIS. I certainly have over the years.

Reading about the new RX1r3 and going through this thread motivated me to pull out my RX1r2, fire the battery up and take a few photos of my daughter. I've been mostly using my A7CR with adapted Pentax and Leica lenses because I prefer a 40-50mm focal length and the RX1R lens is actually wider than 35mm, more like 32mm. But the photos I just took look great, Eye AF worked well, so I think I'm going to use it more.

I've always liked the 42 mp sensor in the RX1r2 (and A7R3) and the 61 mp sensor isn't much of an upgrade for me. The main advantage is the lens and that's the same on the Mark 2 and 3 version. I'm going to duck for cover after I say this, but I've never felt much need for IBIS with a 35 (really 32)mm focal length especially with the smooth leaf shutter. I just crank up the ISO if necessary and I find DXO Photolab does a great job cleaning up any noise that is introduced.

I think people miss how small these are.

I mean, I got the GM5 and a bunch of lenses since people said it was so small. It’s in the size class of that camera with a quality prime.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with Q line and had a variety of X100 series bodies and nothing comes to close to the size to performance ratio of the RX1 bodies.

For those saying IBIS isn’t needed, you’re probably right, but it’s the principle. Stick it in because you can. Same with everything else everyone is disappointed about. Make the body slightly bigger and cram in some of the tech that is baseline for all new Sony bodies. Also, the lens may be great but not using a newer lens seems so lazy.

I’m glad this camera is what some of you are looking for, but after nearly 10 years, this is the update?!?!?

Not sure if it has been mentioned but the lens design is new.

Price in Australia will be less than USA because tariffs.

Sony trying to be Leica is not going to end well for Sony.

$3,999..... *maybe*.

$5,000+ is targeting the wrong market.

This comes close to a Zeiss ZX1 level mistake, IMO.
