There are so many head scratching things here. I think Sony’s desire to keep the body really small is the reason for a lot of these decisions, but with a lens that sticks out so far I think I that’s a poor trade off. Making this a bit larger, and putting in IBIS, a better EVF and a tilting screen, along with a slightly more substantial grip would all be very welcome. And all those omissions while having an eye watering price are just hard to swallow at this stage IMO.

I know everyone compares the RX1 series to the a7c bodies+35mm, and this is a very personal and specific use case but I’ve taken an RX1rII to Lollapalooza and Riot Fest in chicago with zero concern that they’d question it as a “professional camera”. However this year I bought the GFX100RF to bring along and I’m a bit concerned I’ll have to convince security “the lens doesn’t come off, it’s just a big point and shoot”
So yeah, I’d love to just walk around with my A7RV and a small lens but without a press pass there’s a lot of places where these fixed-lens cameras are the only sure thing

The Rx1 problem is the body size, too small. Unlike GFX100RF hard to handheld below 1/100 because the lightness, small grip area, and front heavy lens...
And the 100RF has a leaf shutter, the quietest I've ever (nearly not) heard in my life. It's essentially silent. I'm able to shoot 1/30 sec. without issue, which is surprising given I had to keep my M11 at 1/125 sec. minimum.

The RX1 also has an incredibly quiet leaf shutter...

The camera does seem to solve some of the problems of the original mode - very poor battery life and slow operation. Those were part of the reason I sold my RX1R II. The 61MP is also nice to get further 'zoom' capability through copping. However the price hike is way too high for the modest updates. Nevertheless there is still nothing like it on the market in terms of what it packs in such a compact body. They are probably thinking that if Leica Q3 can get away with over $6K price tag then they can also get away with $5K. For the people who can afford to buy this, they may very well go with it because there is no alternative in the market.

It's a very pretty camera with a great lens and sensor. But I personally don't think I can get past no IBIS. I guess they were saving space or maybe the lens sits too close to the sensor. But the absence hurts sharpness in many shots and also hurts the ability to shoot in interesting but challenging light.
For some very disciplined and skilled photographers shooting in the appropriate circumstances, the lack of IBIS will matter less. But I think I will be sticking to my A7CR with a Sigma 45/2.8 lens on it and with its seven stops of IBIS.

rx1 has a leaf shutter too. it is pretty good for handholding using the vf, terrible using the lcd.

For those planning to stick with their A7CR bodies, there are a few lenses that come close in size to the RX1's 35mm f/2 Sonnar. That said, they're either a bit slower or have a longer FL...and none of them truly match the Sonnar's unique rendering. The Sigma comes closest, but it's also the longest in focal length.
Here are some of the most compact autofocus options for E-mount:
1. A7CR + FE 35mm f/2.8 – About the same size as the RX1's lens, though it's a full stop slower.
2. A7CR + FE 40mm f/2.5 – Slightly longer focal length which some may prefer and a good match in size. (slightly slower)
3. A7CR + Sigma 45mm f/2.8 – Roughly the same size as the FE 40/2.5, only about 1mm longer. While 45mm is quite a bit longer than 35mm, the rendering may actually be closer to the RX1’s Sonnar than Sony's 40mm.
All 3 options offer very similar blur compared to the RX1R's 35/2 lens when focusing a subject at same distance.
There are also other options from brands like Samyang, but those tend to be even larger....Show more →
That''s a really good take on all this.
Sony should have upped the VF and EVF on the A7CR, maybe given it a stacked sensor, maybe given it the A1 II's voodoo autofocus, and introduced a small, rendering-optimized f2.0 35mm lens to go with it. That would be a bargain at $5000, even with the lens sold separately. It would be killer gear and could be the basis for a whole new premium line.

Has anyone seen the price yet in other countries? I wonder how much of the price in the US may be due to the Tariff situation. 5,100 - 30% = 3,570. 3,600 would be a lot more reasonable for this camera.

I shot the II for so many years. I finally gave up waiting after 9.5 years of shooting it and bought a bunch of other things to try. Today I've been heads down in work and missed the announcement.
Now I have to liquidate everything and pick this up. This is what I've wanted minus ONE key feature that I loved on the RX1R II: the flip up/down screen. I actually shoot most of the time with the EVF popped in and use the screen with that.

Not much to add. But I like having a time stamp of my thoughts. For those that want one for a used price it might be tough to find one for a long time. I expect this will not be a volume seller. Off by about $1200 for the package. And no IBIS in 2025 with this dense sensor is going to make the keeper rate much lower. I really like my a7cR. So nice to travel with. It can be super small with the 40 2.5G (love it) or I can hang a 100-400 off it and use it for birding/wildlife with the quite capable AI AF. I’ve been eyeing the 16G too for a near-complete travel AF kit.
I know the RX1R is very small, and the lens pairing is gorgeous but I just don’t find it useful enough. Lovely as it is.
