I’m certain that you’re seeing differences in the color and contrast in the images as you’ve said, just not sure it’s a difference in the sensors between the A7CR and A7RV since we’re told it’s the same sensor and in camera processing. So, the question is what’s causing the differences. Someone else suggested it could be a difference in the lenses used. As far as the RAW converter, since you’re using the same converter for images from both cameras with all parameters set the same, it could also be the way the ACR/Lightroom team profiled the different cameras. That’s

Thanks, Jeff.
Looking at these images again, I'm certain that all but one were taken with the Batis 25, the crumbling building was shot with the Loxia 21.
I no longer have the A7CR, and I didn't mean to start anything here, only to say I've seen a difference in how photos are rendered with both cameras, using the same workflow I always use, and I'm glad I made the switch to the A7RV.
As with most things, everyone's results and experiences will vary.

Wow! 23 pages in 3 days for a camera most seem disappointed with, one way or another.

Sony must be doing something right!!!

And no-one, anywhere, has even taken a photo with it yet

Yes, Sony has learned how to create "clickbait" from the ashes of a cult classic camera. The lens is a well known entity, as is the form factor of the camera, so most here have a pretty good idea of what to expect regarding general use/ handling and image output.

They reused enough components that it is pretty much a known quantity. Handles like the old ones. Image quality should be the same as a combo of the A7R v and the known Zeiss lens. EVF is the same as on the A7C series.

It’s a mashup of old components for over $5000 and the opportunity to spend $500 for a lens hood and a thumb rest.

I think in the Sony-marketing-headquarter they may have had the some discussion going on: The A7cR is doing the job, nobody wants an RX1rIII for more money with a fixed lens - we would need so many development-resources for so few sold items! (they have may sayed)
So, first of all, it is a bold decision to develope and produce an even smaller Fullframe camera so many people did screaming for - respect Sony!
Second: you pay for the size! The same in bycyle-racing: a racing bike to reduce from 9-8kg is no problem, but it is more difficult to reduce from

Yeah eh…well….. all of that engineering effort was expended over 10 years ago. I think this camera update represents uber laziness of them given the elapsed time and technology advancements to release a camera that is essentially 5+ years old.

Others have mentioned tariffs as a contributor to the price surprise, but I don’t recall seeing a mention of the falling value of the dollar. It’s down nearly 10% against many other currencies since the US administration started its thing.

Considered all omissions of the RX1R III, kudos to Ricoh for putting IBIS into the much smaller GRIII and GRIIIx!

How is the Sony mobile app experience nowadays? Is the wifi transfer speed in the newer bodies fast for like 60 mp files? The Q3 is a great travel camera partly to the blazing wifi speed and excellent Leica app. Last time I had Sony, the app was basically unusable.

Thank you for posting that video. It is the first time I clearly saw where the C2 button is located. Don't know how I missed it on other images of the camera.

So what lens would you use on a Sony A7CR if you think the lens on the RX1R II/III is great? It seems that it would have to be an AF lens but are there any MF lens that people think would match better?
I personally not interested in swapping out my A7CR for the new Sony ultra compact but I know some have waited along time for this new camera.

Fred in a very informative and useful post in this thread suggested the Sigma i series 45mm f2.8 as the lens for the A7CR that comes closest to the rendering of the Zeiss 35/2.0, even though its focal length is a bit longer. The Sigma 45/2.8 also has the advantage of being very small and light. It fits beautifully on the A7Cxx cameras.

I also mentioned a few alternatives, although I think the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 renders more like the RX1's Sonnar 35/2 than the others.

Here are the options I brought up, ranked from best to least subject separation (assuming the same framing and subject distance). These lenses are similar in size to the RX1's built-in Sonnar 35/2, though not all share the same focal length. Keep in mind the RX1's lens is technically a 33mm f/2, and it still provides the most separation of the group:

1. 33mm f/2 (RX1’s built-in lens)
2. 40mm f/2.5 (Sony G)
3. 45mm f/2.8 (Sigma Contemporary)
4. 35mm f/2.8 (Sony)

For me, probably why I'd go with an A7C series instead.
I have Sigma i35. Also i24 3.5, a very petite lens.
I'd consider adding MF compact Voigtlanders, 35mm f/1.4 Nokton and 21mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar.
Maybe i90 too.
Several M Mount Voigtlanders that are still very small even with adapter.

With so many recent Chinese lens releases, I'd say there will be plenty of options in the future both AF and MF.

As an A7C series owner, how could you not get a Viltrox 28 4.5? 1/3rd the cost of RXR1III thumb grip!

For me, RX1Riii is the only Sony camera I will or plan to buy. (as I don't see at this stage, any of brand will make much difference for me to switch over) It is not possible for me to get a7CR and a bunch of Sony glasses. (Even I do, I still way more prefer RX1 industry design and Sonnar glass)

A key consideration to easy justify the purchase: I love the fact that RX1Riii take care of my 2nd camera need as prime shooter and can be instantly be a primary camera when I choose to do so anytime.

Out of RF, Q and RX, I feel RF design the coolest, Q are most versatile that pretty much tickle all the box. but only RX1 meet my functionality requirements as a high quality 2nd body can be used for a wide range of subject only take a space of lens.

TBH, once I spend upto to 4K on a camera, you are buying into enjoyment. The key is no longer "Value" but "Joy". If you dont project your enjoyment, for sure don't buy this "overpriced" gadget.

I placed the Q3 43 on order and immediately considered the A/B of purchasing the A7CR and small lenses. For me, the Leica had more to offer than the new Sony, but it is a larger camera. The 40mm f/2.5G was my first lens. My wife used this combination as her first ever use of a camera. Next came Sigma 17mm & 90mm.. all high quality small lenses. I couldn’t resist the larger 24mm GM, but also have more character lenses with the Loxias. So, one great fixed lens vs many great lenses, each with a specific application.

I owned and loved the OG RX1, despite its flaws: no built in viewfinder, not tilting screen, poor AF and abysmal battery life. The compact size and beautiful bokeh of the 35 Sonnar made up for basically everything.

I had all of the (overpriced) accessories and generally left the viewfinder at home. For the size, I was fine with composing from the back screen. So, with the new one, I'm ok with the low res finder, but would have really appreciated a tilting screen.

The new AF is very welcome, but I'm not sure I care that much about getting 60mp, though I guess that means a reasonable resolution crop to 50 and 70mm FOVs. I'm really curious to see how the Sonnar stands up to the new sensor - I'm thinking more of rendering and bokeh than sharpness. The Sonnar was never the sharpest lens around.

Overall, I think Sony is a bit short on innovation on this one, but I loved the size and build of the OG, so I guess I'd still be down with this one, recycled parts and all.

All that said, my RX1 shared bag space with a Fuji X100s, and while I enjoyed the IQ out of the Sony more, I much preferred shooting with the Fuji. And still do - it's the X100V in my bag now.

Waiting to see some hands on reviews and some samples.

What do you mean by best seller. I’ve never seen an X100 camera on any best selling lists. A best seller for Fuji might not mean the same as a best seller for Canon or Sony.

I'm thinking in its category - large sensor fixed lens compacts, just like the RX1. Your point is well made about the difference between 'best seller' for Canon/Sony/Nikon - I can't imagine a pricey fixed lens camera sells the same as a not so pricey MILC with a kit lens.

That said, the X100VI set pre order records, ended 2024 as Map Camera's best seller, period, and is still back ordered. Estimates I've seen online put production at 15-20,000+ units per month, more than double the production of the X100V.

But...the X100 series is not the RX1 series. Very different cameras and price points, so very different markets. But the X100VI is proof that a high resolution, fixed lens compact with a tilting screen and IBIS, priced at around $2k, can sell and sell very well.

I'm not totally convinced that Sony cares if the RX1 sells very well, though.

Fair. But, again, Jared is Jared - he is his brand. So, you get what you expect. There are dozens and dozens of folks doing dry lists of specs and moderate opinions so as not to piss off the camera cos; I think it's fun to see someone actually speak their mind now and then.

yeah, sadly nothing really compares to the rx1. i have an a7cii and use it with my favorite 35s, both tiny and large. some of the lenses are better than the rx1 lens in some aspect e.g. the c/y 35/1.4 is better for portraits at a certain distance, the lux pre-asph has it's distinct glowy character, the FLE and zm 35/1.4 might be a little better for landscape. none of them is as good at everything though and none can come close to replicating the rx1 lenses distinctive look. when i go on a trip the rest get left at home and the rx1 goes in my camera bag as my 35mm, it's the same size as my second choice anyway:

plus the rx1 is small enough that it is what i take for a casual walk or for use while skiing, which i can't do with the RF or Q.
