Yes, I get it about the lens, but why not put it on a slightly larger body?
Why not release 25 versions of the RX1RIII?
One with IBIS, one with flippy screens, one with tilt screens, one with 2.36 million dot EVF, one with 5.7 million dot EVF ,one with 9 million dot EVF, one with dual card slots, one with larger body, one with smaller body, a black one, a silver one.
Make your choice, price 20 - 30K.
No, I'm not exaggerating, regards price or number of variations.

Doesn’t the A7cr have the same sensor as the a7r5?
I would be hard-pressed to say they're the same, having owned both.
Someone who knows sensor types better will hopefully confirm, but based on my results, the colors produced by these two cameras are very different.
The colors on the A7CR were not at all to my liking and I saw a very noticeable difference in color rendering when I bought the A7R5.
I found the A7RV to give richer tones, better hues and more accurate colors than the A7CR, which always looked watered-down to me.
I only shoot RAW, so I had more work to do in post with A7CR files, and often I could not get the colors to look the way I wanted.

RX1Rii didn't sell that great when it came out. It has a cult following. You either love it for its tiny size or hate it for nothing to grip onto. Since they didn't change the lens, you either going to get it because you love the previous RX1s so much, you just want an incremental update with fixed EVF, better sensor, AF and better battery, or you pass it and get a Q2/Q3, x100.
My biggest disappointment as a cult follower of the RX1Rii is the lack of new lens design, no weather sealing and omission of tilt screen. The latter 2 is more difficult to overlook. You just can't fix sensor dust on a fixed lens body. Tilt screen on a small travel camera is a must. I used it on the RX1Rii and Q2/Q3 all the time.

I’ve never used any cameras from the RX1 family but curious how the lens from the previous generation that is at least 10 years old performs with the higher 61 Mpixel sensor? Does it loose any sharpness? I know Fuji had some concerns about their older lenses, designed for the 26 Mpixel sensor performed with their newest 40 Mpixel APS-C sensor used in the XV100VI and X-T5.
Will that be something that someone can test and compare?
I know Fuji significantly updated their X100 lens between the X100IV and X100V. When they then moved from 26MP to 40MP for the X100VI the updated lens held up.
So hopefully that means that the RX1R lens (from 10+ years ago) was already designed for 60MP or that it will flat now and we'll have to wait for the RX1RIV for things to fall in line again. I don't think Sony can afford a mistake like that. They are already getting enough bad press for this camera as it is.
My Batis 40, similar rendering/style to the 35/2 in the RX1R does do really well on 60MP.

I did some investigation into sensor dust problems on RX1s recently.
Some were quoted big prices for repair.
Someone got it done at KEH for surprisingly low price.
Information I found was via Googling which led to several FM threads.
It definitely can be fixed. Unless the KEH post was BS, it can also be done cheaply.
A potential buyer could do the same check I did and follow up to confirm.

I don’t think the Batis 40 and RX1 Sonnar render similarly…
I think the RX1 Sonnar is still good on 61mp—it was great on 42mp. the issue of LoCal remains the lenses largest optical fault in my opinion. I wonder if they’ll have updated the coatings to a change in flare or contrast.

Is it possible/practical? How far back into the camera does the lens protrude? If you have an elegant solution, this would sell like hot cakes. I want one yesterday! Pleeease.
the rear element sits (at best) a couple millimeters above the sensor surface and is bigger than the throat of any FF mount, so it can’t be an interchangeable lens. i was just hoping to give my rx1 a real manual focus feel, which possible, but would take considerable time and CNC work, so i haven’t done anything with it.

Really? I actually own both the A7CR and A7RV and the Zeiss Batis 40mm f/2 CF. I tend to pair the Zeiss Batis 40/2 and 85/1.8 with the A7CR. They are a little larger but also pair the FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G with it. Used my much larger FE 24-70/2.8 GM II and larger lenses like the FE 50/1.2, 85/1.4, and 135/1,8 GM with the RV.

I have owned quite a few RX1 types. They mechanically quality is poor I think generally from a long-term usage perspective. The MF and AF tend to die. The camera is prone to the dreaded "error 61" which makes the camera inoperable. Plus, that's aside from dust...
The pictures Sebboh posted of the disassembled RX1 are from when we tried to get rid of an "error 61" after that RX1 took a fall of no more than 3 feet (from my waist--a big old dog jumped on me while doing some street photography).
Going back to 2008, Sony's repair pricing and system is extremely stupid. I once dinged a 24-70/2.8 ZA. Made the lens very tight to change FL from 24 - 50mm or so. Sony's policy was charging $400 some bucks as a minimum repair price, no matter what was needed. And it was going to take over a month.
I took it to a local shop and they looked at it free of charge and fixed it for about $50 in a couple days.
Fast forward to 2017-ish. That RX1 we took apart was the same-situation. Called Sony they wouldn't even look at it for under $500-ish bucks and it was going to take a while. I didn't want to spend $500 (minimum) on my used camera that wasn't even valued at over a grand...I could just buy another used RX1 for $800-900 at that time. Now it's 2025, and my RX1 is still sitting disassembled. Before we took it apart for lack of better options, and because an MF Sonnar would be wicked and Sebboh is bright enough to pull it off, I also called a very well reputed local repair store I've used for over a decade with a variety of lenses and repairs. They told me with an RX1, they just have to send it to Sony.
There's quite a few horror stories and general idiocy regarding Sony repair service, their pricing and how they sub it out to Precision Camera which tends to be uber spendy, not quick and communicate poorly. I hope things have changed in the last several years, but I doubt they have.
I also hope (but doubt) the mechanical quality and durability, much less the repair process, has improved on this new version even with this pricing. Then again, Leica seems to have a fabled history of repair messes and lonnnng wait times.

Build of other Sony equipment I think has advanced over that time period. Other than the lens, which is the same, it seems like a lot of the guts have to be different. Hopefully they din't "dumb it down" from a quality perspective given a7C series work. Hopefully they've learned a trick or two over those years. Repairability might not have improved, given how much is crammed in there. Just the heat management alone probably means some compromises had to be made.

Bokeh is subjective. It depends so much on the particular photo. I looked back at your test from 2021 and all of those lenses look good to me. For Scene 4 ("Bokeh and transition at f2 at 10-12 feet"), several people ranked the FE 35/1.8 in their top three.
It is subjective for sure. I don't really like super smooth bokeh generally. I would prefer if the Sonnar had a little more character.
I think the FE is very smooth close up, but at longer distances it becomes busier (measurable) and disparate (the center is smoother than the periphery). That's also measurable. I strongly dislike a look of smooth center bokeh and busier corners. Especially on high contast modern non-character lenses. Just looks sloppy/ugly to me. Just an opinion though!

If this is the same sensor as the A7RIV or A7CR, then it's a pass from me.
I'm not much of a color shooter, but I never liked the color files from either of those cameras.
Getting the A7RV for color work was a (very positive) game-changer and reassured me that Sony could make good color sensors.
I could live with the other features, or lack thereof, but that A7CR sensor is not to my taste.
The A7Rv and A7CR have the same sensors. I hadn’t noticed the color difference. Size, EVF and video differ. Same sensors and Bionz XR processor.
